Assessment Planning

Introduction This document has been designed to outline all assessments which is included in the Complete Digital Solution (CDS). Within each assessment, the sections outline which levels (age appropriate) are available – autumn and summer terms, the length of each assessment, how to upload pupils onto the assessment platform and which reports are available for each assessment. Please note: within each assessment, there are sections which are repeated, or vary slightly. This will then allow teachers who have ownership of certain assessments to go directly to the section/assessment which they need, and allows the option to only print the specific section out. For a quick summary, step-by-step of the CDS rollout, go to the last page of this document. All assessments, except KR Surveys, are taken online via www.testingforschools.com – Testwise.

Assessments used in CDS Figure 1. is a diagram which illustrates how the combination of selected assessments, can support schools implementing a whole pupil approach.

Figure 1. Whole pupil approach

The following assessments have been combined within a package to provide teachers with a whole pupil approach – in the form of the Complete Digital Solution (CDS).

Potential - To indicate a learner’s potential performance • Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition (CAT4) assessment highlights how the

pupil thinks, the pupils’ strengths, weaknesses and learning preferences.

Attainment – To show where the learner is now and what can be done to support the

highest possible achievement • Progress Test Series (PT Series) assessments are used for year-on-year support

for teachers when identifying current levels of attainment and tracking progress in core subjects of English (PTE), Maths (PTM) and Science (PTS).

• New Group Reading Test (NGRT) assessment allows teachers to screen and monitor the reading ability of pupils individually and at a group level. As well as being able to show where the pupil is currently at, NGRT can also be used to identify barriers to learning.

• Single Word Spelling Test (SWST) assessment highlights teaching strategies and follow-up activities for improving spelling. As well as being able to show where the pupil is currently at, SWST can also be used to identify barriers to learning.

Barriers to learning – To identify barriers that prevent a learner from achieving their

greatest possible potential • Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Screeners identify early signs of Dyslexia and

Dyscalculia and highlight areas which need further support. • Pupil Attitudes to Self and School (PASS) provides an insight to the pupils’

emotions and learning barriers which could be affecting their learning. • Kirkland Rowell Surveys (KRS) provides an overview of a school’s strengths and

weaknesses which is based on the views of pupils, parents and staff.

What the school receives The school will receive a number of emails to before starting the use of the CDS package.

A Welcome email which will contain the school’s login details (Customer ID) onto Testwise, www.testingforschools.com.

Cognitive Abilities Test: Fourth Edition (CAT4)

When an Assessment can be taken CAT4 helps to identify a pupil’s potential performance. CAT4 can be used as soon as a pupil has entered the school for the first time. Most schools use CAT4 in the first term of a new academic year for new comers e.g. Year 4. Please note – if you have a new comer in Year 5, CAT4 level B can be used to help identify a pupil’s potential performance.

Test levels to use for each assessment Each assessment level contains content for the relevant Year group. If a different level is given to the pupil, results will not be accurate and will not provide with the full analysis compared to the level designed for the relevant Year Group.

Setting up pupil tests

Pupil data template

Upload required pupil data and ensure tests are allocated

You will be required to upload a CSV pupil data file to register the relevant pupils for testing and reporting purposes.

The template fields needed for the pupil data file can be exported from your school management system (MIS).

A CSV pupil data file needs to be created for each register.

Columns A – G & N are mandatory fields.

Columns I – M are non-mandatory fields but this section is vital for detailed analysis within the reports.

Test preparation

Each student will need a computer, a set of headphones and a mouse. All equipment needs to be in good working condition. Each student should also be given a pencil and a sheet of rough paper to do any working out on. This should be handed back to the teacher at the end of the test and thrown away. Before the testing session - It is strongly advised that you go to the Testwise website: www.testingforschools.com and click on Setup Check. This will confirm that your system is compatible with GL Assessment digital tests and will ensure the smooth running of the test session. This is particularly important if your school has not used digital tests from GL Assessment in the past.

Carry out the Setup Check to ensure the smooth running of the test session.

Allow enough time for the testing session or sessions, including settling time for the students. Decide which tests your students are completing during the session.

Provide a computer, a set of headphones and a mouse, in good working condition for each student. Calculators are NOT allowed.

Familiarise yourself with these administration instructions.

Testwise Administration

General arrangements for testing

Be sure the testing room is comfortable.

Place a ‘Testing – Do Not Disturb’ sign on the door.

Try to forestall any interruption of the testing session by visitors or announcements.

You may want to set up the computers in advance if your students are young, in which case it is advisable that a single password is used or the password requirement is ignored.

Page 10: Complete Digital Solution Support Document ... - GL Assessment · Example of Assessment timeline ... in the form of the Complete Digital Solution ... for the CDS package CDS@gl-assessment.co.uk

10

The test environment - The test must be administered in a formal test environment with students made aware that they are taking a test and that the usual expectations of behaviour and constraints of a test session will be in place. It is important that the teacher or invigilator is active in ensuring that students are working their way through the test with intent and that there is no talking or opportunity to copy from another’s work.

Reports The different types of reports available for CAT4 are stated below – not all reports are designed for teachers; some of the reports are designed for senior leaders through to parents. Group report for teachers (GRT)

A group level analysis of a selected group or cohort of pupils helping to communicate results.

This may allow those with similar or contrasting profiles to be taught together with mutual benefits.

Individual student report for teachers (ISRT)

Provides teachers with an analysis of an individual pupil’s results, along with a focus on how they can be helped to achieve their potential.

The narrative includes implications for teaching and learning which offer brief insights into how different levels of ability combined with learning preferences may affect a pupil’s learning.

Individual report for students (IRS)

Provides pupils with an explanation of their CAT4 results and where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

It is important for all pupils to understand that the information gained from CAT4 testing can form the basis of plans for their future development, which they themselves can take some control over.

Individual report for parents (IRP)

Provides parents with an overview of CAT4, an explanation of their child’s results and where their strengths and weaknesses lie.

Developed to support the routine reporting to parents, the narrative text helps them understand their child’s profile of results and actions they can take to further their learning.

Summary report for senior leaders (SRSL)

Provides a high level analysis of a selected cohort or group’s performance against the national average.

The report is designed for use by Head Teachers, senior leadership teams and governing bodies. The introduction will be useful in giving a quick overview and an example of the test material in CAT4.

Page 11: Complete Digital Solution Support Document ... - GL Assessment · Example of Assessment timeline ... in the form of the Complete Digital Solution ... for the CDS package CDS@gl-assessment.co.uk

11

Summary presentation for senior leaders (SPSL)

This presentation is available in PowerPoint® forma0t. Similar to the Summary report for senior leaders, the presentation shows data from a selected group or cohort and compares this to the national average.

It is ideal for sharing key findings and saves time in disseminating information from the Summary report.

CSV file

Results in an excel format to import into your school management system. Combination report*

CAT4 results can be combined with Progress Test in English (PTE), Progress Test in Maths (PTM) and / or New Group Reading Test (NGRT).

Schools that use both our ability and attainment assessments can have access to a free report that compares their attainment data to the ability data from the Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT4).

The ability test plays a vital role when trying to identify underachievers, or those not fulfilling their potential, and when combined with attainment data and professional teacher judgement, it provides a well-rounded picture of each individual pupil.

*Combination report with PTE and PTM is available to be generated from the end of October

Progress Test in English (PTE)

When an Assessment can be taken Progress Test in English (PTE) is used for year-on-year support for teachers to identify the current level of attainment. There are autumn and spring level tests. The Progress Tests do not need to be taken twice a year. Most Schools will also use the summer level tests for year-on-year testing. However, schools are advised to use the transition test, level 11T in the first half term to identify where the pupil’s current level of attainment from Primary school to Secondary school. Most Schools will also use the summer level tests for year-on-year testing. Please note – 11T must be only used between September and end-October in Year 7. Also – if a school has a new joiner to the school in Year 8, the Autumn Level 12 needs to be used to identify a pupil’s current level of attainment.

Reports Type of reports available for PTE is stated below. Group report for teachers (GRT)

Provides a group level analysis of a selected cohort of pupils. It is intended for use by any practitioner, class teacher, and Head of Year or SENCO.

The report will include: o Scores for the group - highlighting pupil names and key scores, such as

Standard Age Score (SAS), national percentile rank, their English level and more.

o Levels - For England and Wales reports will show NC levels. For Scotland, levelling information relates to the CfE. For Northern Ireland, levels of progression are reported with a single level reported.

o Stanines - for PTE these offer a stanine for Reading Comprehension and English Skills, allowing for a meaningful comparison to be made

o Analysis for the group - this makes comparison with the national sample, can be analysis of group scores, by gender, ethnicity, SEN, EAL or any two custom fields.

o Analysis by Curriculum Content Category o Analysis of scores by question o Progress Profile - where pupils have taken a test in the previous year.

Individual Student report for teachers (ISRT)

Provides an in-depth analysis of an individual pupil's results, along with any implications this may have on teaching and learning.

The report includes: o Individual score - this includes a breakdown of scores for each pupils

including their Standard Age Score(SAS), stanine, group rank and levels as shown in the Group report for teachers

o Profile summary - For PTE this includes a scatter gram and allocates the pupil to one of three profiles: reading comprehension bias, balanced profile or English Skill profile. This relates to the separate stanines for reading comprehension and English skills

o Analysis by Curriculum content category o Implications for teaching and learning - based on the pupil's scores,

narrative outlines how the pupil can be best supported to ensure they make the best progress possible.

Progress Test in Science (PTS)

When an Assessment can be taken Most Schools will also use the summer level tests for year-on-year testing. However, schools are advised to use the transition test, level 11T in the first half term to identify where the pupil’s current level of attainment from Primary school to Secondary school. Please note – 11T must be only used between September and end-October in Year 7. Also – if a school has a new joiner to the school in Year 8, the Autumn Level 12 needs to be used to identify a pupil’s current level of attainment. PTS level 13 is to be administrated if the school is teaching a 2 year model and PTS level 14 is to be administrated if the school is teaching a 3 year model.

Test levels to use for each assessment Each assessment level contains content for the relevant Year group. If a different level is given to the pupil, results will not be accurate and will not provide with the full analysis compared to the level designed for the relevant Year Group.

Pupil Attitudes to Self and School (PASS)

When a Survey can be taken Pupil Attitudes to Self and School is an attitudinal survey that provides a psychometric measurement of a pupil’s attitudes towards themselves as learners and their attitudes towards school. In particular, it helps schools and professionals to inform teaching strategies and intervention programmes to help raise standards of attainment and pupil well-being, tackle challenging behaviour and provide a key requirement of the new inspection framework When a year group is administrated with PASS for the first time, the survey should be administrated 6 – 8 weeks after the first week of the new academy year. Then a second survey should be administrated 6 – 8 weeks before the end of the school year. These are best practice for administrating the surveys to get a non-bias response from the pupils. Year Groups which have taken the PASS survey the previous year only needs to administrate the survey once per year.

Kirkland Rowell Surveys (KRS)

When an Survey can be taken Kirkland Rowell Surveys provide a holistic view of all stakeholders within the school (Parent, Pupil and Staff). The questions run alongside Ofsted criteria, and do differ slightly from Primary Schools and Secondary schools, e.g. primary schools have questions regarding the range of subjects taught and out of school activities, where secondary schools questions regarding the truancy and carer advice. Kirkland Rowell Survey should be taken once a year, possibly in the middle of the year, to receive the report before the end of the governors meeting, or senior leadership meeting. The survey needs to be taken in a 2 week cycle; otherwise the results may not be as accurate. English schools can benefit further from our Stakeholder Surveys: Evaluation, Action and Impact professional development module that helps participants get the most out of their survey results.

Setting up surveys Please contact CDS support when you would like to administrate your KRS surveys, as this process is slightly different to the other assessments and surveys within the CDS package.

1. You receive clear instructions on distributing the questionnaires and on how to achieve the maximum response rate

2. Completed questionnaires are then returned, before being passed on to us for collation, analysis and report production

3. The final report, which presents our findings clearly in the form of tables and graphs, is normally delivered to you within 4-6 weeks of receiving completed questionnaires

This takes 48 hours to set up and you will be sent an email which contains the links to the Staff, Pupil and Parent survey. The email will also include an excel spread sheet of all the user names and passwords. As mentioned previously, if your academy feels that you will receive a better response from a paper survey rather than an on-line survey please contact the CDS Support with your interest, and price options will be provided.

Reports The KR reports which are available for Kirkland Rowell are as follows:

Staff survey report o Provides a summary of the results and report, key results, staff priorities,

parent view: Staff summary, standard analysis and time series analysis

Pupil survey report o Provides a summary of the results and report, key results, pupil priorities,

parent view: Pupils summary, standard analysis and year group analysis

Parent survey report o Provides a summary of the results and report, key results, parent priorities,

Dyscalculia Screener

When an Assessment can be taken Dyscalculia Screener identifies dyscalculic tendencies in pupils’ aged 6–14+ years and recommends intervention strategies to help them achieve their potential. The 30 minute test is an ideal tool for screening an entire year group, or for screening those pupils showing some signs of difficulty. It can play an important part in helping both specialist and non-specialist teachers distinguish between those individuals who have poor maths attainment and those whose difficulties are associated with dyscalculia.

It is important that the teacher or invigilator is active in ensuring that students are working their way through the test with intent and that there is no talking or opportunity to copy from another’s work.

Dyslexia Screener

When an Assessment can be taken Dyslexia Screener is an assessment that identifies dyslexic tendencies in pupils’ aged 5–16+ years and recommends intervention strategies to help them achieve their potential. The 35 minute test is an ideal tool for screening an entire year group, or for screening those pupils showing some signs of difficulty. It can play an important part in helping both specialist and non-specialist teachers distinguish between those individuals who are having general difficulties in literacy and those whose difficulties are associated with dyslexia.
