How to SizeHow to Size an Air Compressor an Air Compressor

for a Dry Pipe for a Dry Pipe Sprinkler SystemSprinkler System

Page 17: Complete Product Line - General Air Products Fire Protection Division

- Measure the amount of pipe and the size of the pipe and use the chart below to convert it to gallons.

- Gallons based on a capacity of 1 foot of pipe

- Based on actual internal diameter of pipe

How do you determine the total size of the system in How do you determine the total size of the system in gallons?gallons?

Diameter Gallons Diameter Gallons

3/4” 0.028 3” 0.383

1” 0.045 3 1/2” 0.513

1 1/4” 0.078 4” 0.66

1 1/2” 0.106 5” 1.04

2” 0.174 6” 1.501

2 1/2” 0.248 8” 2.66

Page 18: Complete Product Line - General Air Products Fire Protection Division

For Example…For Example…

- There is 640 feet of 2” pipe in the system: 640 x 0.174 = 111.36 gallons

- There is 120 feet of 4” pipe in the system: 120 x 0.660 = 79.2 gallons

- 190.56 gallons total which we will round to 200 gallons

- So a compressor with a minimum of 200 gallon capacity is required. The following models will meet this:

- L20033* - Base Mounted Lubricated Unit

- LT20033* - Tank Mounted Lubricated Unit

- OL21533* - Oil Less Riser Mounted Unit

- OL21533*CT - Oil Less Tank Mounted Unit

Accessory Spotlight:Accessory Spotlight: Line StartersLine Starters

We strongly recommend that a line starter accompany every General Air Products' air compressor.

General Air Products' IEC Line Starter provide protection to motor windings from harmful currents that result in temperature rises that may be caused by either overloading the motor, sustained low line voltage, or locked rotor.

Think of it like this…

Line Starters are to air compressors what surge protectors are to your computer.

Page 22: Complete Product Line - General Air Products Fire Protection Division

Accessory Spotlight:Accessory Spotlight: Air Maintenance DevicesAir Maintenance Devices

The AMD-2 is used forautomatic operation with a dedicated air compressor for a sprinkler system, such as the L Series base mounted compressor.

The AMD-1 is used when compressed air is

supplied through an existing factory air supply

or when using tank mounted units like the

OLT Series.

Note: Air Maintenance Devices (AMD) are required on every system unless the compressor meets the code exemption in NFPA 7.2.6.5.2

Accessory Spotlight:Accessory Spotlight: Manual Dryer & Coalescing FilterManual Dryer & Coalescing Filter

The F3500 Coalescing Filter protects manual desiccant air dryers from oil vapor and contaminants.

The AD3400 Manual Desiccant Air Dryer absorbs moisture produces by compressing air. The desiccant changes color to indicate saturation.

Designed for:• home use• small air tools• light contracting work

• Not Industrial Duty

• Standard Pressure Setting 125 PSI

• Regulator has limited adjustment range

• Cheaper than a fire protection air compressor

Page 33: Complete Product Line - General Air Products Fire Protection Division

All General Air Products air compressors are specifically designed for dry pipe sprinkler

system applications.

Defining a Fire Protection Air CompressorDefining a Fire Protection Air Compressor

• Designed specifically for NFPA 13 dry pipe sprinkler system applications

• More expensive than retail air compressors

• Run tested for performance under standard system conditions

• Pressure settings factory set for most common system requirements

• Support staff with fire protection expertise

• Industrial duty components

Light Bulb Comparison:Light Bulb Comparison:

SimilaritiesSimilarities

Same basic components:

• Glass Enclosure

• Filament

• Electrical Contact

• Fuse

Same basic operation:

Electricity runs through the wire and stem to the filament which heats up and creates light.

Light Bulb Comparison: Light Bulb Comparison: So why not use them interchangeably? So why not use them interchangeably?

The differences are obvious.

Each was built for a specific application and only works well when used in that application.

SimilaritiesSimilarities

Same basic components:

• Filter

• Relief valve

• Pistons

• Pressure switch

Same basic operation:

When the pressure switch activates the pistons turn and air is drawn in through the intake filters, compressed and put towards the intended application.

Common problems associated with retail compressors used in fire protection applications:

• Significantly decreased unit life

• Sprinkler system operation failure (where pressure is left at the default setting)

• Warranty can be voided when retail compressor used on fire system

• Lack of technical support

• Forced to change parts to meet system demands
