It’s hard to believe this marks our fifth year—my time flies when you’re having fun! From readers who commend us for the service we provide to the community; to our supporters who not only allow us to promote them, but make it possible for us to continue growing so we can reach more readers….DavieLiFE is so fortunate!!

This issue marks our first of 2014 and we are thrilled to start the year off by celebrating another great teacher in Davie County! Brooke Jennings, a teacher at Cornatzer Elementary and also the 2013-14 Teacher of the Year for Davie County, is another great example of how lucky we are in this community. I believe after reading her interview with DavieLiFE, you too will see that her heart and soul is committed to the students she encounters.

Another detail in this issue is the announcement of our 5th Anniversary Commemorative edition (see page 4). We are excited to put together this unique publication that will celebrate not only the success of DavieLiFE, but allow participants to further share their stories with the thousands of readers who will receive copies of this special issue that will be truly “one of a kind”. For more information on how you can claim your space, contact myself ([email protected]) or Molly Ridenhour ([email protected]).

In closing, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage residents in Davie County to mark May 6th on their calendars. Our community will have the opportunity to vote on a bond referendum for our high school, as well as elect local leaders who will be instrumental in guiding our county for several years. Although we all may not agree on the issues at hand, I do hope that voters will be proactive and research the issues and candidates on the ballot. These are exciting times in our community and people from across the state of North Carolina will be watching the outcome of this local election —I believe it will set the tone for many things in our area and will also affect the future of many generations.

Once again, we thank both our readers and supporters for all that you do to make DavieLiFE possible—we are blessed to be a part of a publication dedicated to life in Davie County.

Look for these scissors throughout to find money-saving coupons!

BRCC: Chipping Away at a Lower ScoreBy Nathan Broyles

There are numerous articles written about the chipping technique, however I want to cover an overlooked aspect, which is the method used to practice chipping.

All too often, I see golfers near the practice green hitting a few chip shots, concerned with the out-come, but not about their own swing, ball flight, or spin. The following is a method I teach my students.

First, chip to a flat area four feet off the edge of a putting green. Second, place a tee in the green about three steps onto the putting surface. Finally, start chipping with your pitching wedge, hitting shots that will fly to the tee. Pay attention to each shot and ask yourself how far does the ball actually fly in the air, what distance did the ball roll on the green after landing, and what height did the ball fly for that shot?

Paying attention to these three factors will help you focus on how the ball reacts once it hits the green based on how far and how high the ball flew.

Once you have the ability to hit a majority of your shots consistently in the air to the tee, you will have an idea of how far the ball rolls. With some practice, you will have the ability to control how far your ball flies in the air and have a good idea of how far the ball rolls based on the distance you have to fly the ball to your landing spot. This can help you get the ball closer to the hole more consistently in the upcoming year!

Located just west of Winston-Salem, Bermuda Run Country Club offers the best in club membership. With 36 holes of championship golf, two clubhouses, Olympic size pool with lazy river, tennis center, great dining and a full calendar of social events, your whole family is sure to find something they will love.

5 Reasons Why Finding Engaged Employees Matter to Your BusinessBy Kathy Hartung

When hiring a new employee, the right match can make all the difference. We all know someone who’s accepted a job only to discover the position didn’t match what was promised in the interview, the culture was a poor fit or they simply weren’t engaged by the work. This translates to an unhappy and unmotivated employee, but what’s the cost to the company who hired them?

1. Mismatched Employees Cost Companies Money A career misfire is expensive for employers. A 2011 Gallup poll put the cost of disengagement and lower job satisfaction at a mind-boggling $300 billion annually in lost productivity. For employers, that translates to increased absenteeism, decreased production, poor attitudes and lower quality of work.

2. Negativity Is ContagiousAn added threat is that disengaged employees can—and often do—negatively impact the work of engaged employees.

3. Good Attitudes Equal Good ResultsIf unengaged employees cost companies money, the opposite is also true—engaged employees earn companies money with higher production and new ideas flowing in.

4. Revolving Door SyndromeThe time and money spent training a new hire will need repeated if a career match goes awry.

5. Love Your Job, Love Your Company, Love Your Life The average American employee spends approximately 1,700 hours per year at work. Being unhappy for that significant a portion of time benefits no one.

Why do career mismatches occur? Usually it’s because a company is in a rush to fill a job. Job placement agencies — theoretically designed to do the “homework” of finding ideal employees for companies — too often focus on the numbers. They’re simply looking to fill jobs.

The Resource is a different type of agency. Divided into five specialty divisions overseen by resource leaders, the agency identifies career seekers with the drive, attitude and ethics that best align with a company’s vision. This ensures a strong cultural match and positive work engagement, from executives and managers to skilled workers and part-time staff.

The Resource’s 30-plus years of in-depth experience across multiple verticals, combined with insight and innovation, has given them a track record of success. For companies or individuals seeking a successful long-term match, let the professionals at The Resource show you how the right career match can transform a career, a company, and a life. Homeowners Mortgage: Where Our Interest is Saving You InterestBy Jim McMillan

In 1992, Jim McMillan opened Davidson Mortgage Services in Lexington, NC, and the Company soon became one of the most trusted locally owned mortgage businesses in the Triad. Over the last 20 years, Davidson Mortgage originated almost 6,000 loans totaling over $650,000,000.

In January 2013, Davidson Mortgage joined Homeowners Mortgage Enterprises, the mortgage division of CoastalStates Bank, located in Hilton Head, SC. Homeowners Mortgage is a full service regional mortgage-banking firm headquartered in Columbia, SC. The company arranges and buys loans from community banks, Farm Credit Banks, mortgage brokers and credit unions throughout the Southeast. In addition, the company benefits from a strong retail presence in South Carolina and now with five loan production offices in North Carolina, it is one of the largest privately owned and most successful mortgage banking firms in the Southeast.

As Homeowners Mortgage, the locally based originators have access to a more extensive variety of loan products including Conventional, FHA, 100% USDA and VA loans as well as Reverse Mortgages. Homeowners works with many different lenders which allows for very competitive pricing on rates and closing costs. In addition to using local loan originators and local appraisers, all processing, underwriting and closing packages are handled internally, allowing borrowers to be guided quickly and easily from application to closing.

Whether purchasing a new home or refinancing an existing loan, the process of obtaining a home loan can be frustrating and confusing. It is extremely important to have experienced loan originators who are directly available in person, by telephone or email to help guide you through the process. In today’s market, every home loan is unique, and making sure you have the best possible advice is a key element in navigating the largest financial decision most people will make in a lifetime.

While the originating office is located in Lexington, applications and free prequalifications can be made in the office, by telephone or on-line at www.HomeownersMtg.com. For current rates or information, contact any of our home loan experts.

Individually You Hair Salon: Specializing in Hair for the Entire FamilyBy Erica Bost

Imagine being in a place that is devoted totally and completely to you. A place that works to find the best cut, color, and style just for you. You can find all that and more at Individually You Hair Salon! Individually You is a full-service, family-owned and operated hair salon located in Bermuda Run, NC. We specialize in the latest haircuts and styles for the entire family.

Individually You first opened its doors in Clemmons in 1979. During that time, the hair industry was evolving into a whole new era! There was new technology that proved hair, skin and nails were vital components to proving who people were. That same technology was then passed on to participating hair salons with a system known as Trichioanalysis. “We literally took a sample of hair and put it on a

slide and looked at it under a trichoscope in the hair salon,” says owner, Marty Foster. “The strand could show many things such as, if a person was on medication, if the hair was straight, curly, and many other things.” What did this mean to hairstylists? That they actually had proof of what many products and medications did to the hair. In addition, stylists could prescribe which shampoo and conditioner were most beneficial to the hair to reach optimum condition and keep it there. There was a service known as Chemical Services that were implemented only by licensed professionals as a result of the findings of the analysis and done only in the salon. This analysis was free at Individually You. With all these findings the name Individually You became known as the salon that caters to the individual—and still does!

After many successful years in Clemmons, Individually You moved to Davie County in November of 2012. “Clemmons was getting too big and a good part of our customer base is from this area, so we thought it would be a good move for us,” states Foster.

Also, an important part of the salon is Marty’s aunt, Yvonne Sheets and stylist Leah Stewart. Leah admits that although she isn’t related to Marty and Yvonne, they are like a big family. “We have a good team and we all get along well.”

Individually You’s total philosophy is to guide you through all there is to know about your hair. They are fully staffed with highly skilled, seasoned stylists, and all are advanced in their trade. The stylists can cut, color, straighten or curl your hair. They dry it, style it and then prescribe the best solutions to care for your hair until your next visit.

Each visit to Individually You begins with a detailed client consultation to ensure we exceed your expectations. We want the experience at Individually You to be relaxing and rewarding. We offer a complete line of professional products by Redkin to ensure the best match for your individual needs so you will know how to care for your investment when you leave our salon.

In the Office with Attorney, Chad BomarBy Chad Bomar

DavieLiFE is excited to introduce our newest columnist, Chad Bomar, an attorney with Coffey Bomar located in Bermuda Run, NC. Mr. Bomar will be using his legal knowledge to answer some of the most common issues he works on with clients in upcoming issues during 2014. Bomar is pleased to share his expertise with readers and encourages you to contact his firm directly to discuss your individual legal needs as the information in this article is for general information purposes and does not constitute legal advice.

New Laws Governing LLCsMany businesses in Davie County are operated as Limited Liability Companies (LLCs). New laws governing the formation and operation of LLCs took effect January 1, 2014. The new laws will apply to all LLCs regardless of whether they were formed before or after January 1, 2014. These changes could impact your business in many ways.

Under prior law, LLCs were to be “member managed” or “manager managed”. The new law does not require this management structure. Rather, LLCs may now be operated by boards of directors and officers. The new law also draws a clear distinction between an owner of a “membership interest” in an LLC and the holder of an “economic interest”. With this change, a person may now possess an economic interest in an LLC without assuming all the responsibilities of membership. Importantly, many LLCs that were formed prior to January 1, 2014 utilized Operating Agreements which stated that they were only limited “to the extent required by law”. Operating Agreements containing such language may now need legal review to determine whether they continue to act as originally intended.

It is not possible to describe each change in the law in this short article. The changes represent a complete overhaul of the system governing the formation and regulation of LLCs. If you currently operate an LLC or are planning to organize an LLC or other business entity in the future, recognize that the recent changes in law may be very relevant to your endeavor. Should you need further information or have questions in that regard, please do not hesitate to contact me directly, [email protected]; (336) 408-6741 (cell); (336) 940-3009 (office).

Realtor Provides Fresh Eye for Buyers and SellersBy Eleanor Fuller

Delana, with RE/MAX Preferred Properties, brings a specific knowledge of construction to her buyers and sellers. After working many years as a builder’s agent, she decided to use her expertise to help her clients understand the value and differences in homes. “I want my clients to know what they are looking at and understand the cost differences and resale value between existing homes and new homes. A 42” cabinet is more expensive than a 36,” maple is more expensive than birch, but if they don’t notice these differences they don’t realize the value” she says. Window size is another commonly overlooked item that most buyers don’t even notice. She points out these differences the moment she starts showing a property. “My sellers’ benefit in the same way,” she explains, “because I realize and appreciate the upgrades they have made and the additional money they have spent, and I can sell it.”

With such a unique understanding of both sides of the market, Delana stresses the importance of buyers working with a knowledgeable realtor that knows the builders in their area. “There is a big difference in builders,” she says, “especially with regard to quality and customer service.” Her extensive work with builders in and around Davie County has allowed her to help clients contrast properties and decide which one is a better fit for them. From comparing the shingle types on a house to explaining the value of different types of foundations, Delana can help a buyer make a more informed decision. If new construction is what her client requests, Delana’s focus is to simplify the construction process. She can take a client’s plan and fix the issues they have with it, since she has worked on building versions of a majority of them.

An artist at heart, Delana brings those talents to her clients by showing them how upgrading something as simple as the light fixtures and faucets can freshen up an older home and bring an entirely new look to it. “Having a fresh eye on your home is invaluable,” she insists, “and decluttering and staging a home is one inexpensive way to make it more desirable.” Delana offer this service to all of her sellers.

An integral part of buying or selling a home is understanding the value of the property and its components. Delana ensures that her clients have expert knowledge at every stage of the process. Contact her at www.delanarealtor.com or (336) 577-6580 and don’t miss her out and about Davie in her red REMAX beetle!

Back in Time: Oak Grove & MainvilleContributed by Ellen Newman

While some parts of Davie County are changing before our eyes thanks to commercial growth, in some areas it’s as if time stands still. The Oak Grove and Mainville communities tend to dodge business and housing development. The biggest changes for them was getting electricity and running water in the 1940’s, and later when the roads were paved and the interstate came through.

Most older people will tell you life was hard work, but it was a good life. You had milk cows and stored the milk in a bucket in a deep hole in the ground. You made butter and cream and you killed and dressed hogs at Thanksgiving. You boiled the fat to make lard for cooking. You put out rabbit traps and sold them for a quarter apiece.

Their children remember walking a mile each way to the closest store. “We started out with no money but would pick up empty pop bottles out of the ditch and turn them in for a nickel return deposit...each of us would have 20 to 30¢ which would buy a 16 oz. Cheerwine or grape soda, and plenty of 1¢ fireballs, licorice sticks and bubblegum with comics and coupons inside.”

Nobody had much money, so your economic status wasn’t a factor in choosing your friends. Neighbors helped each other. Black and white landowners lived, worshipped and farmed side by side. . John Lee Foster, a barber in the 1930’s and 40’s, had a shop in his house. “White, black, it didn’t matter,” a relative recalls, “people came from all around to get their hair cut there.”

You didn’t go to the doctor much, so it wasn’t uncommon to know of a “root worker” who could “talk the fire out of you.” They say “Aunt” Mag Scott had healing powers. A lady in her 70’s remembers the time she backed into a wood stove as a child and got seriously burned. “Aunt Mag kind of mumbled words over me that I couldn’t understand,” she said, and recovered without even a scar. Another man said she cured him of yellow jaundice.

You won’t find historic buildings or a new store in Oak Grove/Mainville, and it hasn’t changed much in 50 years, but they probably know their neighbors and they like it that way.

Hillsdale UMC HisCare Ministries: Life Lessons for AllBy Heather Nardone

“While we try to teach our children about life, our children teach us what life is all about.” I find this quote, by Angela Schwindt, to be true in my home life as well as in my life as the Director of HisCare Ministries at Hillsdale United Methodist Church. At home, I am raising a nine year old boy who challenges me to think differently and to rediscover the world through his eyes. At work, I am surrounded by children of all ages in our preschool, after school care, and summer day camp. Each child comes to me with a mind full of curiosity which leads to learning for children and adults alike!

In our preschool we teach children ages 1-5 years using “The Creative Curriculum”. This unique learning environment allows our children to learn through discovery and at individual paces and appropriate levels. As I watch these young minds develop, I realize the importance of these early educational experiences. It is paramount for these children to explore ideas, manipulate objects, and test limits. This will prepare them for Kindergarten and beyond!

Our after school care children, in Kindergarten through fifth grade, arrive at the church after a full day of learning at school. In our care, these children enjoy daily devotions, snacks, and free play. In addition, we offer designated times for homework and Chapel. Through interactions with these young ones, I understand the lost art of play. So much of a child’s years in elementary school are filled with mandatory knowledge and rigorous testing. While with us, our after school care kids cherish the time with no set rules or agenda! It is vital to provide such free play to children so that they may develop their imaginations and individuality.

During the warmer months, our summer day camp boasts themed weeks which include Biblical teachings, educational learning experiences, and fantastic field trips! It is amazing to witness the excitement of the campers as we travel to destinations like “Lazy 5 Ranch”, work on the latest craft during art, and share God’s love in our Chapel lessons! As I join in the fun, these summer campers teach me that learning is meant to be thrilling as well as useful. Also, they teach me that it is important for children to feel connected and genuinely interested in their own learning to receive the most benefit.

We can all agree that life is full of awesome opportunities and I am sure that we all know the saying “You learn something new every day”. This is especially true for the young and for the “young at heart”. I invite you to visit the HisCare Ministries at Hillsdale UMC to see what else our children are teaching us!

26 Spring 2014

Once again, DavieLiFE is excited to introduce you to the 2013-14 Davie County Schools Teacher of the Year, Mr. Brooke Jennings. We love having the opportunity to learn more about the talented educators we have in our community and enjoy sharing these “Q&A” encounters with our readers. Please join us in congratulating Ms. Jennings on this great accomplishment!

DavieLiFE: Tell us about yourself so our readers can get to know you better.Brooke Jennings: I have been married to my best friend Kevin Jennings for six years. We are so very blessed to have two beautiful, healthy, and handsome boys. Jackson, our first son, is 3. He is one of the kindest hearted three-year-olds you will ever meet. He has never met a stranger and even at three years old, he would give you the shirt off his back. We have already said that we would not be surprised if he becomes a preacher or a teacher one day. Kevin and I just welcomed our second son Carson, in December. He is such a good baby and his smiles will melt your heart.

I was born and raised in Yadkin County–the Courtney area to be exact. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 2004. I had heard wonderful things about Davie County Schools, so I asked to do my student teaching at William R. Davie. I was placed with a wonderful mentor, Angela Spillman, who helped plant a seed that has never stopped growing! As part of my student teaching requirements, I was assigned to observe multiple classrooms

throughout Davie County. While observing a third grade class at Cornatzer Elementary, the teacher whom I was observing went into labor. I was asked to cover her class for the remainder of the day. At the end of the day, I was asked by Principal Barbara Owens, to cover this teacher’s maternity leave for the remainder of the year. This was when I was given the opportunity to become a full time kindergarten teacher the following year. I give God all credit and thanks for opening this door for me at Cornatzer Elementary School! Cornatzer Elementary is such an amazing place to work and is filled with dedicated teachers who love teaching and love their students.

In 2008, Davie County chose 15 teachers to send back to Appalachian State to earn a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology. I was so privileged and very blessed to be chosen for this honor! I graduated from Appalachian State once more in December 2010.

When did you decide that being an educator would be your career?Jennings: Teaching is something I have always dreamed of doing. From a young age, I knew wholeheartedly that God put me on this earth for a reason.

I can remember as far back as Mrs. Lowders’ Kindergarten class and Mrs. Baity’s First grade class and the impression these wonderful teachers had on me. They embedded the love for teaching and of learning at such a young age. I remember thinking I wanted to be just like them when I grew up!

Brooke JenningsMeetDavie County Schools 2013-14 Teacher of the Year

DavieLiFE.com 27

While in high school, my first part-time job was at an afterschool program. This job also helped affirm my love for children and my determination to work hard to get into a good college.

How long have you been teaching? What are some of the major changes in education, both positive and negative, that you have witnessed over the years?Jennings: This is my ninth year of teaching. I must admit that this year has proven to be one of the most challenging years thus far for teachers and students. These challenges are due to personnel budget cuts, changes in testing requirements for students, especially third grade and teachers losing their tenure. Along with these constraints, we are dealing with the stigma that NC is ranked 49th in teacher pay, it’s easy to see that positive moral could be lost.

Thankfully, I work in a county that has an amazing superintendent, along with supportive administrative personnel, dedicated and devoted teachers, and supportive parents who come together with one common goal and that’s to do whatever it takes to see that our students succeed and receive the education that they deserve.

Are there any particular techniques you use in the classroom that you believe help you “reach” students?Jennings: First and foremost, as a mother, I try to treat every child as if they are my own. The first question I ask myself is, “What would I want for this child if he/she was my child?”

In order to reach my students, I do my best to make sure that my teaching is relevant to the real world. I enjoy forming and watching cooperative groups within my classroom. Students are allowed the opportunity to work with different peers and learn how to collaborate through communication and problem solving skills. Project based learning has become an everyday part of my classroom.

My beliefs in teaching are observed when you walk into my classroom and see students engaged in learning through

exploration. I work diligently and spend a great amount of time in preparations, to make sure that I differentiate learning activities according to students’ ability levels, learning styles, and the interests of each student in my classroom.

My biggest reward in teaching comes from watching the excitement and love for learning on my students’ faces. This excitement and love makes all the time, energy, and dedication worth every minute!

The rewards of teaching are immeasurable. When thinking of my impact in this world, I often think of a quote by Christa McAuliffe, “I touch the future. I teach.”

Do you have any words of wisdom that you would share with individuals who may be looking at becoming educators?Jennings: Teaching is not a job, it is a calling! I feel wholeheartedly that there is no job that is more rewarding. What other job allows you to teach children the foundations of life? What other job allows you to instill and embed a love for learning and exploration? What other job allows you to be a positive role model and have so many little impressionable eyes on you? You think you are going to walk into a classroom each day and teach, but in reality, you end up learning.

What does it mean to you to be Davie County's Teacher of the Year?Jennings: It is such an amazing and rewarding feeling being selected as Davie County’s Teacher of the Year. I love teaching! I love children! And most importantly, I love knowing that I am making a difference in this community and world. I believe that every child is a unique gift from God. God has blessed me with one of the most rewarding jobs ever. I feel very much honored and very blessed to be a part of Davie County Schools!

Again, congratulations to Brooke Jennings….. Davie County Schools is blessed to have you!

Information for Picky Parents of Young Children By Dr. Donna Hinkle

Help your child learn during his first five years and he’ll be ready to succeed in school. Turn the TV, computer, and phone off most of the time, and watch, listen, and respond to your child’s cues as you provide safety, security, and predictable daily routines. If you need child care, use the highest quality available, and enroll your 3- or 4-year-old in a high-quality preschool.

The State of North Carolina decides how to regulate child care and preschool. Here’s some information to help you understand child care and preschool in North Carolina.

• Part-Day and Small Homes. No government official oversees your child’s program if it is part-day or in a small child care home. North Carolina does not regulate programs that serve the same children for up to four hours a day, or child care homes with up to two children who are not related to the child care provider.

• Full-Day and Larger Programs. North Carolina regulates centers caring for the same children more than four hours a day, and homes with three or more children unrelated to the provider. But North Carolina exempts religious-sponsored centers (usually child care centers located in churches) from many important rules intended to increase program quality.

• Religious-Sponsored. If a church sponsors your child’s center, the center is not required to obtain a Child Care License. Instead, based on an inspection each year, the program gets a Notice of Compliance, indicating that it meets basic health and safety rules. However, the center can choose to meet all child care rules and obtain a North Carolina license.

• Stars. A North Carolina licensing official inspects each licensed program (full-day homes with three or more children and full-day centers not sponsored by a church) once a year to determine compliance with State licensing rules, which results in a one-star license.

Centers and homes can apply for two to five stars, by meeting higher standards, including higher staff education, which is the strongest predictor of quality. An official evaluates the program every three years to determine compliance with the higher standards.

• Accreditation. All child care and preschools can apply for national accreditation, which indicates high-quality, but there are no accredited programs in Davie County.

For professional assistance in choosing the best child care for your child, consider PickyParents. With 35 years experience in early childhood, Dr. Hinkle will visit programs with you or for you, to help you find higher quality care and education for your child. For more information, visit us at Facebook.com/PickyParents.

FOCUS on Ellen DrechslerThe clerk of court’s office is the heart of all judicial proceedings in the 100 counties in the State of North Carolina. You may only be aware of the office after you receive a speeding ticket or a jury duty summons but there are a variety of responsibilities that are handled by the clerk of court.

As the primary judicial record keeper for the county, the clerk is responsible for filing, indexing, and safeguarding each and every warrant, pleading, and legal document that comes into the office. The clerk is responsible for receipting, investing, and dispersing funds that pass through the office every day.

The most important function of the office is that of probate judge. The clerk is responsible for the administration of decendents’ estates, and therefore presides as judge in matters dealing with estates. Additionally the clerk presides over foreclosures, adoptions, partition proceedings, incompetency determinations and guardianship matters.

Each clerk of superior court is an elected official serving a four-year term at the discretion of the citizens of their county. For more information, feel free to contact Davie County Clerk of Superior Court, Ellen Drechsler at (336) 936-3000 or [email protected].

Senior Services relies heavily upon volunteers for things such as delivering meals, helping with office work such as newsletters, insurance counseling and more. In addition financial support is needed to supplement county and grant funding.

You can become part of our Legacy Gift program by making a financial contribution to Senior Services or remembering Senior Services through a will or insurance policy.

An endowment fund is also available through Davie Community Foundation to offer a way to provide permanent financial support for Senior Services.

Big Brothers Big Sisters At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we know that children who avoid interactions with the juvenile justice system—and violence, drugs, and alcohol—are more likely to succeed and make their communities stronger and more vibrant. That’s why our professional staff members, supporters, and families advocates support, encourage and champion the relationships between Bigs and Littles. Bigs help teach their Littles right from wrong and help them make good decisions.

Research SupportedOur impact on juvenile justice is evident in longstanding research conducted by Public Private Ventures. When comparing those children matched with a mentor to those waiting to be served by Big Brothers Big Sisters, these researchers found that:• Littles were 46 percent less likely to initiate drug use. • Littles were 27 percent less likely to initiate alcohol use. • Littles were almost one-third less likely to hit someone.

In Davie County, boys wait two to three years before being matched with a mentor. It’s a startling statistic and one we are constantly working to change. Simply put, we need more male role models to step up to mentor these young men so we don’t lose them to the pitfalls they face as adolescents.

Targeting Those At RiskWhile one-to-one mentoring will always be our core programming, we were pleased to implement a new program this past year that allowed us to actively serve juvenile justice involved youth, as well as those who are at high risk of becoming delinquent. Through grant funding by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, Rotary Club of Mocksville, and Davie County, we established The Road to Success: A Middle School Life Skills Program. This program works directly with middle school youth and their parents/guardians to assist them in developing the critical skills and supports they need in order to improve their outcomes and put them back on the road to success.

Students participating in the program benefit from a combination of services including twelve weeks of group life skill building sessions utilizing an evidence based curriculum, individual meetings with a trained program specialist, and six sessions for parents designed to enhance protective family factors. Program staff work closely with juvenile court counselors, law enforcement, and school counselors and administrators in order to establish and reach goals set for each student. By being a part of a positive learning community with an evidence-based curriculum, students will improve their resilience to drugs and develop a strong feeling of self-worth while receiving critical skills on how to improve parent/family relationships.

With the many positive changes we have seen in the students, we have plans to expand The Road to Success program in the coming year. Potential opportunities include a Life Skills curriculum for high school students and one-to-one mentors for juvenile justice involved youth. As always, we depend on volunteers to make our program a success. If you have a background or experience in working with this population of youth, we encourage you to contact our office to see how you can get involved.

Together, we can change the life of a child, for the better, forever!

Daniel Boone Family FestivalBy Eleanor Fuller

Looking for a fun event to take your family to? The Daniel Boone Family Festival held in downtown Mocksville is exactly what you are looking for! Complete with Fort Dobbs re-enactors, historical tours and kids’ areas . . . it is history, shopping, and tons of entertainment for the entire family.

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, the Daniel Boone Family Festival will have craft vendors, food tents, activities for children, and contests. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the National Guard Pedal Carts, climbing wall, and football toss. The frozen t-shirt contest, a huge crowd pleaser last year, will be back this year. Try to unroll a frozen t-shirt and put it on before the other contestants for a cash prize—be warned, it’s not as easy as it may seem! Also, don’t miss the hula hoop contest, a battle of finesse, grace, coordination and fun!

Festival patrons can take part in three different historical tours sponsored by the Davie County Historical and Genealogical Society. The first tour goes to Joppa Cemetery, the burial site of Squire and Sarah Boone, as well as various other stops in Farmington. A second tour stops at the Jesse A. Clement House where there is an opportunity to tour the inside of the house and see the owners dressed in period costume. The final tour visits various locations in Cooleemee including the Bullhole and the Revolutionary War Hero Richmond Pearson’s gravesite. Tours are $5, take place on bus or van, and last approximately an hour. For complete tour information, please visit the website.

Last but not least, be sure to enjoy the free music all day at Junker’s Mill. Bands scheduled to appear include Tony Baily featuring a blend of rock and country music, the Folsom Prison Gang with your favorite Johnny Cash hits, and more. Bring a lawn chair and your dancing shoes! Check out the website for the latest music schedule.

Davie County Young Life To Host 1st Annual 5KBy Eleanor Fuller

Whether you are an avid runner or walking is more your speed, be sure to mark your calendar for the 1st Annual Davie County Young Life 5K Run & Walk. The 5K will take place on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Tanglewood Park at 9 a.m. You won’t want to miss an opportunity to help high school students attend what Young Life directors call “the best week of their lives” at Young Life Summer Camp.

Davie County Young Life, formed in 2012, believes that while all kids are unique, they share significant common needs. They

need someone to stand with them and accept them as they are. They need someone to walk with them, to “hang” with them as they make their way in life —someone who demonstrates God’s love and faithfulness as they face choices and trials. That’s what Davie County Young Life provides at Davie High School. Justin Hepler, director of DCYL, says that the group is for anyone—Christians, non-Christians, kids who attend church regularly and those who don’t. The group meets weekly, on Tuesdays at the Davie Family YMCA, but instead of calling it a meeting, they call it “a party with a purpose.” “It’s a comfortable, high energy atmosphere where kids participate in games and songs as well as hearing about Jesus in terms they can understand from someone they trust,” Justin says. There is also an opportunity for students to go deeper in Campaigners, a weekly gathering

for kids who wish to learn more or grow in their faith through study, service and leadership. Each summer, the group attends Young Life camp, a week where deep relationships are forged in the midst of fun and fellowship and where kids are exposed and listen to the greatest love story ever told, that of God’s love for them.

Your participation in Davie County Young Life’s 1st Annual 5K will help kids attend this life changing week. DCYL’s goal is for every student to be able to attend camp, regardless of their financial situation. The registration fee is $25 until March 30 ($30 afterwards). The fee includes a high performance t-shirt, official timing chip, and rewards for the top male and female finishers in their age groups. For more information or to register, go to daviecounty.younglife.org.
