FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4Conference Session Descriptions
8:00am - 9:00am AVIATION C
Management of the high-risk pregnant mare
Stephen Manning, DVM, MSc, DACT
A small but significant subset of pregnant mares fall into the category of “high risk.” Typically, these are mares with a previous history of pregnancy loss or neonatal compromise. Or, these are mares that are diagnosed with serious medical conditions during a current pregnancy which may compromise their own health and/or that of the fetus. During this session, we will cover how to identify, evaluate and treat the high-risk pregnant mare. We will pay attention to conditions that put pregnant mares at risk of morbidity or mortality, pregnancy loss, dystocia or neonatal compromise. We will address the diagnostic techniques that can help identify these mares and the interventions that can be put in place to optimize their chances for delivering a healthy foal.
8:00am - 9:00am AVIATION B
What the f ...: dealing with unexpected outcomes
Chris Clark, VETMB, PhD,DACVIM
Unfortunately, part of being a veterinarian is dealing with the unexpected — not every case progresses the way we want. Too often, veterinarians and veterinary technicians blame themselves or blame those around them. In this session, we will discuss strategies for dealing with and reflecting on unexpected outcomes and how such events can become learning opportunities for everyone involved.
8:15am - 9:15am LECTURE ROOM E
Pet insurance on auto pilot
Bill Skubovius, CIP, CRM, ACS
The landscape has changed. New technological advancements can now enable your practice to automate the insurance process and insure more clients. Learn how your practice information management system (“PIMS”) can integrate to access these solutions in Q4 of 2019.
9:00am - 10:00am CREDITS: 1 CVPM LECTURE ROOM D
Mental Health: What we need to know and how we can help
Mike Condra, Ph.D., C.Psych
Among the misconceptions about mental health problems is that they affect only a small percentage of the population. It is now recognized that in a 12-month period, one adult in five (20 per cent) in Canada will develop a serious mental health problem. No occupational group is immune to this, and recent evidence shows that professionals in the veterinary field appear to be particularly susceptible to disruption in mental health resulting from chronic stress, compassion fatigue and moral distress. In this context, it is increasingly important to be well-informed regarding mental health and its impact on day-to-day functioning as well as how to respond in effective, compassionate and responsible ways to people who are coping with mental health problems. In this presentation, Dr. Condra will discuss some of the issues relating to mental health, with particular reference to the field of veterinary medicine.
9:30am - 10:30am AVIATION C
Dystocia and obstetrics in the mare
Stephen Manning, DVM, MSc, DACT
Dystocia is a relatively rare event in the pregnant mare, but since it’s associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality for both the mare and the neonatal foal, it can be a devastating event for the horse owner. Time is not on our side in this species, so obstetrical interventions must be timely and appropriate to maximize the chances of delivering a live foal and minimize the risk of post-partum complications for the mare. This session will focus on a review of normal parturition, the common causes of dystocia, and the approach to obstetrics for mares both in the field and in the hospital.
9:30am - 10:30am AVIATION B
Interpreting dental radiographs
Candace Lowe, DVM, MVetSc, DAVDC
During this interactive lecture we will investigate the most common oral-dental diseases in the dog and cat. Case-based discussions will follow and include species affected, pathogenesis of disease, common presentation/location, why and which treatment is recommended.
9:30am - 10:30am AVIATION A
Reproductive emergencies
Jennifer Loewen, DVM, MSc
Because most Canadian pets are spayed and neutered, reproductive emergencies happen infrequently. However, these situations can be extra stressful as there may be multiple lives at jeopardy. In this presentation, we will review common reproductive emergencies including dystocia, pyometra and eclampsia with case-based examples.

10:15am - 11:15am LECTURE ROOM E
Profit: the secret to setting fees
Joel Parker, BSc, DVM, Veterinary Practice Solutions
Heavy fee increases can act to increase one’s profit on a short-term basis but will end up losing more clients in the long run. You reach the point of what they refer to in retail — price resistance. And even your good clients will have some resistance to a degree. This results in reckless fee increases without any regard for your median disposable income for your area. In this seminar, you’ll find out how you can achieve a fine balance in your fees (both front and back-end) so as to be both profitable and victorious in the long run.
10:30am - 11:30am LECTURE ROOM D
Bridging the gap between the client and the practice: tips to increase client compliance (part one)
Marshall Liger
Multiple AAHA studies have shown that client compliance is a problem in most practices. There are four factors to consider when trying to increase the compliance of your clients. In part one of this series, we will explore the first two factors. First, it is important to identify who the client is and what their boundaries are. Today’s consumer is more demanding than ever. You cannot connect with them if you do not know the right things about them. What do they expect of your practice? What level of pet owner are they? Second, it is necessary to assess your team. A successful practice requires a well-trained team that functions in unison. How are team members showing up each day? How are they communicating with clients? What tools are available to help them achieve their best? If the team is not properly trained and cared for, they will not be able to connect with the client.
10:45am - 11:45am AVIATION A
Transfusion medicine
Jennifer Loewen, DVM, MSc
Transfusions can be a life-saving treatment in emergency medicine. However, if done infrequently, it can be a daunting task. There are many factors to consider when doing a transfusion including acquisition of the product, what product to give, pre-transfusion testing, monitoring during transfusion and monitoring for transfusion reactions. This lecture will review component therapy, pre-testing required for transfusions, how much to give and what reactions to monitor for.
11:00am - 12:00am AVIATION B
Dental detective: who, what, when, where, why?
Candace Lowe, DVM, MVetSc, DAVDC
During this interactive lecture, we will investigate the most common oral-dental diseases in the dog and cat. Case-based discussions will follow and include species affected, pathogenesis of disease, common presentation/location, and why and which treatment is recommended.

Courageous conversations: respond, don’t react
Rebecca Rose, AAS, CVT Catalyst Veterinary Practice Consultants
Veterinary team members are hungry for tools that will help them bring tough questions and concerns to their managers and veterinarians. Avoiding difficult conversations (because of conflict aversion) does not work. Attendees will learn productive ways to initiate potentially difficult conversations with co-workers, management and clients. Be bold, be bright and courageous!
11:30am - 12:30pm AVIATION C
Post-partum problems in the mare
Stephen Manning, DVM, MSc, DACT
Post-partum complications are not uncommon in the mare, and they can lead to significant morbidity and even mortality for the mare and for the neonatal foal. This session will focus on the common post-partum problems experienced by mares, and the strategies we can use to diagnose, treat and prevent these issues.
12:45pm - 1:45pm AVIATION A
An update on seizures
Danielle Zwueste, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)
The management of epilepsy can be a complicated field to navigate. This talk will review current concepts in the management of seizures including anti-epileptic drugs, monitoring programs and alternative therapies.
12:45pm - 1:45pm LECTURE ROOM D
Bridging the gap between the client and the practice: tips to increase client compliance (part two)
Marshall Liger
As a carryover from part one of this two-part series, we will explore the remaining two factors that will increase client compliance. After the client and the team have been evaluated, it is then necessary to evaluate practice protocols and to monitor behaviour. What processes does the hospital have in place to help the client be successful? We will explore a multitude of methods, some of which include improved communication skills, a highly effective reminder system, use of technology, and ways to take the responsibility out of the clients hands.
1:00pm - 2:00pm AVIATION B
Feline inappropriate urination
Karen van Haaften, DVM, DACVB
Inappropriate elimination is a common frustration for cat guardians. With a long list of medical and behavioural differentials, this presenting complaint often frustrates veterinarians as well! This lecture will cover the basics of working up an inappropriate elimination case, with emphasis on behavioural differential diagnoses. Treatment plans — including enrichment, environmental management, behaviour modification and the role of anxiety-reducing medications — will be addressed.
1:15pm - 2:15pm AVIATION C
Acupuncture in horses: an evidence-based approach
Stephen Manning, DVM, MSc, DACT
Acupuncture has become a commonly-used therapeutic modality in equine veterinary practice. There is some good evidence in the peer-reviewed literature to support the use of acupuncture in certain conditions in the horse, but that evidence is limited — much of the application of equine acupuncture remains to be adequately studied. This session will examine the history of veterinary acupuncture in North America, the theories regarding how the therapy might work, and some of the research specific to the horse that has critically evaluated its efficacy.

Trust and training: nothing is as fast as the speed of trust
Rebecca Rose, AAS, CVT Catalyst Veterinary Practice Consultants
The principles of trust create a tax or a dividend. Veterinary teams want to be trusted and veterinarians want to trust their team. Trust defines a healthy workplace but how do we measure trust and improve upon it? Through continually training as a team, with a common goal in offering excellent patient care and client experience, teams build trust. Attendees will outline veterinary team services offered within a hospital and ways of offering training to increase trust.

The skin(ny) on lumps and bumps: in-house cytology basics
Nicole Fernandez, BSc, DVM, MVetSc, DACVP (Clinical Pathology)
Cytology is a quick and easy way to diagnose many skin lumps and bumps. When reviewing cytology smears in-house, it is essential to approach each smear in a standardized manner and to be aware of the limits of your diagnostic microscopy skills. Some lumps and bumps are easier to diagnose than others. In this session, you will practise making a cytologic diagnosis of common skin masses using an interactive digital platform that allows each attendee to participate. We will also discuss when it is appropriate to submit smears to a clinical pathologist and how to ensure those smears have the best chance of being diagnostic.
4:00pm - 5:00pm AVIATION B
What veterinarians need to know about dog training
Karen van Haaften, DVM, DACVB
Dog training in North America is an unregulated industry, and many individuals enter the field without any education, experience or established skill. Voluntary certifications are numerous and confusing to clients. Working with a humane, effective trainer can offer a huge benefit to your clients’ relationship with their pets, but critically assessing a trainer’s background and methodology is a necessary step that many veterinarians struggle with. This presentation will go over the major trends in the dog training industry and highlight dog training certifications that indicate trainers are using humane and effective methods.

How the wealthy got there
Jim Kraft, CPA, CA, MTax, CFP, FEA, Estate and Insurance Advisor, Vice-President, BMO
This session will review those wealth planning strategies that every veterinarian must consider to reduce their income taxes, protect their assets and plan for their future. Income taxes are becoming the single largest expense of professionals today and it makes sense to utilize those strategies that can minimize and defer taxes. Wealth planning is the process of evaluation what you have and the strategies available to better get you to your goals.

Sell or Salvage Seminar
Joel Parker, BSc, DVM Veterinary Practice Solutions
Heavy fee increases can act to increase one’s profit on a short-term basis but will end up losing more clients in the long run. You reach the point of what they call in retail, price resistance. And even your good clients will have some resistance to a degree. This results in reckless fee increases without any regard for your median disposable income for your area. In this seminar, you’ll find out how you can achieve a fine balance in your fees (both front- and back-end) so as to be both profitable and victorious in the long run.

Digital infrared thermography: a paradigm in veterinary practice
John C. Godbold Jr., DVM
Infrared thermography has been reported in the veterinary literature for over 50 years. What has hampered its adaptation into daily practice is the availability of equipment that had medical grade sensitivity, resolution, accuracy, and still be affordable. In 2016, Digatherm introduced a unit that has medical sensitivity, measures 327,920 pixels within each image, utilizes veterinary specific analytical software, and will pay for itself in less than a year. This session will cover the benefits and applications that digital thermal imaging will bring to your practice.

Zoological companion animal case studies with a focus on radiography — exotic companion mammals
Miranda Sadar, DVM, DACZM
Zoological companion animals (ZCA) — including exotic companion mammals (ECM), birds, and reptiles — are increasingly popular pets. In addition to presenting more frequently, client demand for care for ZCA species has increased. Higher demand means that hospitals are performing diagnostics for ZCA species, including radiology. Pet owners usually have good intentions, but unfortunately, many of the disease processes that are seen in ZCA species are a result of suboptimal husbandry and diet. In this lecture series, we will discuss cases and focus on the radiographic lesions for each disease process. We will also discuss physical examination findings, relevant literature and treatments. The lectures will not build upon one another, so it isn’t necessary to be present for all three. This lecture series will be interactive and case based. It will teach clinicians to become more comfortable in recognizing both normal and abnormal radiographic features in zoological companion animal species.

Why video is essential to your veterinary practice’s online marketing
Video is an increasingly popular medium that boosts online engagement, improves SEO ranking, and increases ROI. In this presentation, we will explore the significance of video for veterinary practices and how you can incorporate it into your online marketing strategy to draw in new clients and continue to engage with current clients.
2:00pm - 3:00pm LECTURE ROOM D
The future of televeterinary practiceEveryone knows that veterinary remote digital services is coming. We are changing from a world where veterinary patients necessarily had to be within reasonable travel distance, often across cities, so state regulation made sense. Now we are entering a time where the services are immediately global so even national boundaries are challenged. Because this is such a new type of practice, it is still possible for the profession to police this ourselves. That is the goal of a current effort by the Society for Veterinary Medical Ethics (SVME). This lecture will explain that process and offer suggestions on how any general practice can benefit from offering televeterinary services.

Chronic enteropathies in dogs and cats: part 1
Shauna Blois, BSc, DVM, DVSc, DACVIM
The term “chronic enteropathy” describes intestinal disease of unknown cause in dogs and cats, causing clinical signs such as chronic vomiting, diarrhea and/or weight loss for more than three weeks. Specific etiologies include food-responsive enteropathies, antibiotic-responsive enteropathies, inflammatory bowel disease, and small cell lymphoma in cats. This presentation will review options for initial diagnostic and treatment approaches as well as the use of diagnostic tests for more severe or unmanageable cases. Specific therapy can differ for each disease and response to treatment can be variable. Management of chronic enteropathies can vary depending on diagnosis, but usually involves multimodal therapy. Different treatment options will be compared using case presentations, including how to address cases in which minimal diagnostics can be performed. Evidence from the literature will be used to discuss the role of adjunctive therapy such as antacids, probiotics, fecal microbiota therapy and other agents used in the management of these conditions.
