Visual WeightEvery element in an image has visual weight

An element that dominates has more visual

    weight

Incidental elements should have less visual

    weight than main elements

Elements having equal weight produce abalanced image

One element domination another gives an image

    a dynamic quality

    One third - two thirds

    If we spend time

    following the rule of thirds

    and place ours main

subject on the third - it

    leaves us with two thirds

    of the image to think

    about.

    The two thirds is the

    most important!

What youput in the other two thirds will make or

    KISS

Simplicity is the key to most good

pictures. The simpler and more direct a

picture is, the clearer and stronger is theresulting statement.

    Vertical Lines

Vertical lines are familiar also in the form of

the standing human figure or trees. When

including vertical lines in your image you mustconsider whether to give that image stability

by anchoring your vertical line to a base or

whether to give your image movement and

possible tension by cutting the vertical off

    from its base.

    Horizontal and Vertical

    Lines

Combining horizontal and vertical lines in

an image can create a sense of equilibrium,

as one acts as a stop to the other.

    Diagonal Lines

Of all lines, diagonals introduce the most dynamism in apicture. Freed from the confines of having to align

vertically or horizontally with the frame boundaries,

diagonals offer an infinite array of potential angles. They

provide an even stronger sense of direction than other

    lines.

  • 8/3/2019 Composition Slides

    42/84

    Curved Lines

Curved lines are unique in that they convey a

progressive and less direct change of directionthat straight lines. However, in photographs,

many curves lead the eye in a recognizable

    direction.

    S Curves

    S shaped curves are a

classic shape to includein a photograph. The

shape of the S gives a

    restful and balanced

    feeling to the image and

leads the eye gentlyaround the scene or into

    the distance

    Rectangles

    Rectangles abound in man-made

structures but are less common in

nature. They are useful incomposition because they are the

    simplest and easiest means to

    divide the frame. However, care

must be taken to align the edges

perfectly with the edges of the

frame for the image to have a

    sense of symmetry and balance.

    Triangles

Triangles, whether actual or implied are one of the most important

shapes in photographic composition. Look for triangular shapes in

your images. Our brains unconsciously connect objects and into

patterns and shapes. Triangular shapes are simple to construct or

imply. The corners of the rectangular frame already provide twosides of a triangle so it only requires a single diagonal line, real or

implied, for the brain to see a triangle. Natural convergence of

horizontal lines also created triangles. They can be both dynamic

because of the diagonals and stable if they have a level base. They

exist every where there are three points in an image except where

the points are in a straight row.

Object in sharp focus as being more important

Expect the central element to be in sharp focus

Central element to be close to the frame center

A balance of contrast bright less than dark

Elements similar in color will be seen as connected

Elements similar in size will be seen as connected

Implied connections such as eye contact will be assumed to be

    real

Shafts of light will direct a viewers eye to an object

  • 8/3/2019 Composition Slides

Viewer will be drawn to lighter areas of the image

Converging lines will be treated as evidence of depth

Diagonal lines point the most strongly

Water horizon needs to be straight

    objects

    Isolated elements draw the eye

Will notice recognizable elements above non-recognizable.
