Comprehension styles
How do you remember what you read?
Can those skills be improved?
Testing Comprehension

Did you find this difficult?
Styles to Improve Comprehension
• Predicting
• Comparing and Contrasting
• Recalling/Summarizing
• Making Inferences/Drawing Conclusions
PredictionsPredict what will happen next.
Should be a fun process that does not distract from reading.
If actively engaged, predictions should occur naturally.
Hypothesize why the king in My Last Duchess calls her his “last duchess”
Compare/ContrastTalk with others to get their views.
Discuss previous works with similar qualities or same author, possibly who influenced the writer, the time era etc.
My Last Duchess
Porphyria's Lover
Recall/SummaryRecall details from readings
Summarize what has been read
Retain information better if “teaching” occurs
Inferences/ConclusionsLogical inferences proved by text
Conclusions can be supported by text
Predicting- Creating Poem
From the handout, re-create the poem how you see it.
Logically supported by the first few lines.
About 1 page in length not graded on poetic skill, but on content.
Rhymed lines by AA, BB, CC etc. until ZZ, try to stay with the pattern.

Comparing and Contrasting
Creating your bloghttp://classblogmeister.com/
Post a blog of your poem, then leave constructive comments on 2 classmates blogs.1.Compare/contrast your idea vs. classmates idea. Don’t criticize ideas, only show how opinions differ.2.Critique/justify why opinion is supported by text given, or not supported.
Recalling/Summarizing
Now that you have read the full poem recall and summarize the main action in the poem. To do this we will create our own comic strip in class
