ForewordThe Comprehension Cloze section is one of the most challenging sections in the PSLE paper. There are no helping words given and a student requires specific skills to be able to score for this section. Some students manage to get by easily, with the answers just ‘popping out’ magically. Many others struggle to find the right words to fill in the blanks. Contrary to popular belief that you cannot ‘study’ for this section, you actually can! Just like a detective who searches for clues to find the answers to crack a case, a student learns to hunt for clues and apply the right techniques to derive the correct answers in a passage. This book reveals useful techniques that you can learn and apply in search for those clues together with ample practice to work on.

To score for this section, you need to:

1 have good general knowledge of different types of issues and topics to answer the ‘Common Sense (CS)’ types of questions,

2 build on your general knowledge by reading widely on an extensive range of current issues and topics,

3 master a wide range of vocabulary words and have a good grasp of phrasal verbs,

4 have sufficient practices to hone your ‘detective’ skills in identifying the different types of techniques to be used,

5 be exposed to the different types of techniques to be used through more practices to help you sharpen your ability to put the correct answers in the blanks.

This book provides the most comprehensive exercises for this section by providing a varied range of passages to enable you to hone and master the answering techniques.

Eating HealthilyDo you know that your diet affects your health? Eating balanced and

1. hea lthy( CS/SS ) meals helps us manage our weight and protects us from deadly

2.

( CS/SS ) like diabetes and obesity.

The first step to eating healthily is to fill half of your dining plate with fruit and

vegetables. Some vegetables you can consider to put 3.( PG )

your plate would be

spinach, cabbage and lettuce. 4.( PG )

for fruit, you can choose those which are

5.

( CS ) in vitamins, like apples, oranges and strawberries. Fruit

and vegetables contain 6.( CS ) nutrients like calcium, vitamins and

minerals which our body needs throughout the day. Like the saying goes, “An apple a day

keeps the 7.( PG/CS )

away.” The next step would be to fill your plate with whole grain foods. 8.

( C ) fruit and

vegetables, you only need to fill up one quarter of your plate with these foods. Some foods

which you can consider are brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholemeal spaghetti. These

foods, 9.( PR )

are generally high in dietary fibre, have many 10.( SS )

.

They help to control blood sugar, lower ‘bad’ cholesterol, aid digestion, promote better

nutrition absorption, and even build up the body’s immune 11.( CS )

.

Lastly, fill a quarter of your plate with meat and other types of protein. Some meats

which you can consume would be chicken, beef and duck. If you are a vegetarian, you can

put 12.( PG )

some tofu and egg instead.

Other than making wise choices about the foods we eat, we should also eat regularly and

in small frequent meals. Research has proved that the people who eat breakfast regularly

maintain a healthier weight. One reason could be that eating a healthy breakfast reduces

hunger 13.( PG ) the rest of the day, 14.

( C ) reducing the chances

of overeating at lunchtime. It is important to know what we are eating so that we know how

to take care of our body. Eating healthily will help keep our body fit and 15.( SS )

from diseases. The next time you think of eating unhealthily, just remember that you are what

you eat!

Note

In this case, the answer could not be found within the sentence itself, or the sentences before and after the sentence with the blank. As such, you should proceed to search for clues from the paragraph before or after the sentence with the blank.

B Contextual Clues

As you begin to read the passage before attempting to find the answers, ask yourself, “What is the topic of this passage?” This will help you narrow down the contextual clues and related vocabulary found in the passage.

If the passage is about bees, then you should start thinking about words, themes and vocabulary associated with the topic given. Some of these words might be the answers to the blanks in the passage! Use the 5W1H(What,Where,When,Who,Why,How) to help you generate the different possible words related to the topic.

Here are some examples:

Food Pyramid

Food pyramidDo you have any idea what a food pyramid is? A food pyramid is a 1. diagram

( CS )

which helps people know how much food they need to 2. eat/consume( SS )

. It also helps in

promoting healthy eating. 3. Eating( SS )

healthily can help to prevent diseases like heart

diseases, diabetes and obesity which can cause serious health problems.

The food pyramid is divided into six sections. The lowest 4. section( SS )

of the

pyramid is called the bread, cereal, rice and pasta group. We need to eat about six to eleven

servings of these foods every day. Some examples of food that go 5. i nto( PG )

this

group are rice, spaghetti and cornflakes.

The next layer of the pyramid is 6. where( PR )

the vegetables and fruit go to. For the

vegetable group, we need to take about three to five servings 7. but( C )

for the fruit

group, we only need to take about two to four servings a day.

On top of the vegetable and fruit groups is where the dairy product and meat groups go

8. to( SS/PG )

. Some examples of 9. dairy( SS )

products would be milk, yogurt and

cheese. For the dairy product and meat groups, we only need about two to three servings a

day, 10. u nlike( C )

the vegetable and fruit groups.

Lastly, the top of the pyramid belongs to the fats, oil and sugar group. Some foods that

belong 11. i n/to( PG )

this group would be French fries, lollipops, cookies and cakes.

Since it is at the top of the pyramid, this means that this group of food needs to be eaten

the least. 12. Therefore( C )

, people only need to eat very 13. little( SS )

of this

food group or none of it at all. However, some of the foods contain fats which are

14. hea lthy( CS/SS )

, such as fish and avocados.

In conclusion, the food pyramid plays an important 15. pa rt/role/fu nction( PG )

in helping

people to eat healthily and lead healthy lives.
