Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Bring your own device (BYOD) is an IT policy where employees are allowed or encouraged to

use their personal mobile devices to access enterprise data and systems.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) • Four (4) options:

– Unlimited access for personal devices.

– Access only to non-sensitive systems and data.

– Access, but with IT control over personal devices, apps and stored data.

– Access, but prevent local storage of data on personal devices.

The Benefits of BYOD

• Increased productivity and innovation: Employees are more comfortable with a personal device and become expert using it — making them more productive.

The Benefits of BYOD

• Employee satisfaction: Your people use the devices they have chosen and invested in — rather than what was selected by IT. Avoid carrying multiple devices to workplace.

The Benefits of BYOD

• Cost savings: BYOD programs sometimes save budget by shifting costs to the user, with employees paying for mobile devices and data services.

Barriers to adopt BYOD

• Cost – Employees unwillingly adopt BYOD as it incurs personal cost in purchasing and maintaining their own devices.

Barriers to adopt BYOD

• Management – With employees bringing different types of devices to work, device management becomes complicated. Different configurations requires different provisioning and settings.

Barriers to adopt BYOD

• Security – Different types of device have different security loopholes e.g. rooted Android device and jailbreak iPhone.

E-Learning

• E-learning is an education via Internet, network, or standalone computer.

• In other words, it’s referring to the usage of electronic applications and processes to conduct learning process.

• This applications and processes include web based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration.

Mobile Learning

Page 16: Computer Applications- Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy and Online Learning Environment

The Benefits of Mobile Learning

• Personalised Learning - transforming from teacher-centred teaching to student-centred learning. Enable self-paced learning and personalised learning experience.

The Benefits of Mobile Learning

• Easy Maintenance – Most mobile computing devices need very little maintenance and installing the software is simple, quick and easy - there is little need for any technical support. This is important because it puts the learner, teacher and school in control of their technology.

The Benefits of Mobile Learning

• No more ICT suites - Students are herded in large groups to use the computers. Thus technology becomes compartmentalised and discrete rather than ubiquitous and generic.

The Benefits of Mobile Learning

• Auto-Save - Saving files takes place automatically ‘behind the scenes’ constantly in the background, which means learners (and teachers) know their work is always safe.

The Benefits of Mobile Learning

• Contextual Learning - the form factor, battery life and apps mean that it can be an ‘anywhere anytime’ learning device. This makes it ideal for projects and learning which take place out of the classroom, in the schools grounds, on a day visit or residential stay.
