Generation (1940-1956)

Ø Huge , slow, expensive, often a reliable

1. 1946• Presper Eckert and William mauchly

build the ENIAC (Electronic NumericalIntegrator And Computer)

• use vacuum tubes instead ofmechanical switches of MARK 1

2. 1951• built the UNIVAC (Universal Automatic

Computer)• Which could calculate at the rate of 10

000 addition per second.

Generation

Ø Technologies

• Vacuum tubeIn a computer a vacuum tube which is an

electronic tube about the size of lightbulbs, was used as the internalcomputer components.

• Punch cardPunch card was used to store data

• Magnetic tapeMagnetic tape was introduced in 1957. It

was faster & more compact method ofstoring data.

Computer Hardware

Generation

Ø Problem

1. The vacuum tubes generated a great deal ofheat causing many problems in the temperatureregulation and climate control.

2. The tube also burnt out frequently.

3. People operating the computer did not know thatthe problem was in the programming machine

Silicone Chip

• Silicone chips were manufactured in 1961 at thesilicone valley

• Then came the integrated circuit technology, which had reduced the size and cost ofcomputers

• Other than that, the magnetic Core Memory wasreplaced by a device called the microchip

1. Printer

Type of printer that employs movable print heads withpins or wires that shoot and strike the ribbon placing adot on the paper with hundreds of dots forming imagesor text.

DOT Matrix Printer

Printer developed by Canon which forms letters andimages on the paper by spraying small streams ofquick-drying ink. The ink is stored in a disposable inkcartridge.

Inkjet Printer

Laser printers are Printer that uses laser technology toprint images on the paper. The laser recreates theimage on a negatively charged drum which will thencollect ink that is positively charged to attract to theareas of the image. The Paper is then negativelycharged therefore the positively charged ink is attractedto the paper and then is fused onto the paper. See laserprinter printing steps for step by step procedure of laserprinters.

These printers use a pen to draw the imageon the paper. Usually, plotters are FrictionFeed but occasionally can be Tractor Feed aswell.

Plotters

A printer that uses heated pins to "burn"images onto heat-sensitive paper. The pinsare electrically heated and brought intocontact with the specially treated papereasily, instead of with great impact. Thecoating on the paper discolors when heatedin this way. These printers, used incalculators and many fax machines, areinexpensive, but produce low-quality, lowresolution print. They are however, quiet andfast as they print.

This type of scanner provides a flat glass surface ontowhich the original is placed. The illumination and

sensing elements move under the glass to scan theimage. Flatbed scanners are available in a wide rangeof sizes, prices, and capabilities. Some flatbeds offer a

transparency scanning adapter as an option.

External storage is an alternative storage. It is veryuseful to store programs and data for future use.The storage is required for two reasons:

1. The working memory of the CPU is limited in sizeand cannot always hold the amount of datarequired.

2. Data and programmers in storage do notdisappear when the power is turned off.

a) Random-Access Memory (RAM)

• RAM is installed inside computers. RAM is also known asa working memory.

• The data in RAM can be read (retrieved) or written(stored).

• RAM is volatile which means the programs and data inRAM are lost when the computer is powered off.

• A computer uses RAM to hold temporary instructions anddata needed to complete tasks. This enables thecomputer CPU (Central Processing Unit) to accessinstructions and data stored in the memory very quickly.

• RAM stores data during and after processing.

b) Read-Only Memory (ROM)

• ROM is another type of memory permanently storedinside the computer.

• ROM is non-volatile. It holds the programs and datawhen the computer is powered off.

• Programs in ROM have been pre-recorded. It can onlybe stored by the manufacturer once done, it cannot bechanged.

• It has complex functions such as start up operatinginstructions, translators for high-level languages andoperating systems are placed in ROM memory.

• All the contents in ROM can be accessed and read butcannot be changed.

1. Secondary storage is another alternative storage tokeep your work and documents. It is very useful tostore programs and data for future use.

2. It is non-volatile, which means that it does not needpower to maintain the information stored in it. It willstore the information until it is erased.

a) Magnetic Medium

• Magnetic Medium is a non-volatile storagemedium. It can be any type of storage mediumthat utilizes magnetic patterns to representinformation.

• Example of magnetic storage are:– magnetic disk such as: a floppy disk, used for

off-line storage– hard disk, used for secondary storage– magnetic tape; including video cassette, audio

storage reel-to-reel tape and others

b) Optical Medium• Optical Medium is a non-volatile storage media that

holds content in digital form that are written andread by a laser. These media include various typesof CDs and DVDs.

• These following forms are often commonly used :– CD, CD-ROM, and DVD: Read only storage

– CD-R: Write once storage, the data cannot be erasedor written over once it is saved.

– CD-RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM: Slow to write butfast reading storage; it allows data that has beensaved to be erased and rewritten.

rewritable memory that functions like RAM and ahard disk drive. Flash memory store bits ofelectronic data in memory cells just like DRAM(Dynamic RAM), but it also works like a hard diskdrive.

• Flash memory cards and flash memory sticks areexamples of flash memory.

THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PRIMARY ANDSECONDARY STORAGE

Is non-volatile, which means that itdoes not need power to

maintain the information storedin it.

Has a volatile memory for RAM andnon-volatile memory for ROM.

Refers to various ways a computercan store program and data.

An internal memory (inside theCPU) that can be accesseddirectly by the processor.

Storage capacity is larger.Storage capacity is limited.

Examples : Floppy disc, Hard disk,CD-ROM, USB drive

RAM / ROM.

Alternative storage in a computer.Known as the main memory of a

computer.
