DVD rewritable drives from mainland China and Taiwan come in internal and external form factors. The main

The Super Multi DVD drive that supports DVD RAM writing is the mainstream. The available form factors are H/H desktop and 9.5mm models for external drives, slot-in types and notebook PC use. Some makers are developing ultraslim 7mm units.

DVD rewritable drives have been the mainstream optical drive for notebook and desktop PCs since 2006, when prices for the product line began to fall. The situation will not be much different in 2009 as component costs keep declining, translating to a 10 percent decrease in projected quotes.
Under efforts to stabilize quotes and avoid a price war, more makers are enhancing product design and capability.
Value-added models such as those offered by EZPnP are available from $100 to $300.
BD Combo or BD rewritable drives are considered high-end. The subcontract price of BD combo disc drives is from $100 to $200. BD recorders, forecast to be mainstream in 2011 by Techno Systems Research or TSR, have a subcontract price of $50 to $100.
Internal DVD rewritable drives, considered midrange products, are priced from $25 to $37. The external portable models go for $40 to $75, depending on the material of the casing.
Generally, DVD rewritable drives from the mainland are 10 to 20 percent cheaper than those from Taiwan. Internal models with an IDE connection are priced lower than SATA products.
The worldwide shipments of optical drives reached 310 million units in 2007 and 330 million in 2008, according to TSR.
The same growth rate applied to 2009 would place shipments at more than 350 million units.

China’s CRT monitor industry is expected to stay in a downward trend this year as LCD units continue to take precedence among makers’ production strategies. Based on customs statistics, the country exported 2.24 million CRT monitors in 1H08, 38 percent lower than the same period in 2007.
As early as 2006, many suppliers were shifting to LCD monitors as panels supporting the latter penetrated the mainstream.
Although CRTs have not been immediately phased out, makers are reducing production in favor of LCD monitors.
All monitor suppliers in China now provide LCD models, but only a few are still engaged in developing CRT units.
Currently, there are about 20 companies that export CRT versions. Most are located in Shenzhen and Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
Small and midsize companies constitute the majority. Most large-scale makers in the line focus on LCD monitors and devote only a small percentage of production to CRT models.
Generally, 70 to 85 percent of output is composed of LCD monitors and 15 to 30 percent consists of CRT units.
Some companies are expected to leave the line by 3Q09 as volume orders continue to decline due to the economic slowdown and unsustainable production costs.

The falling prices of LCD monitors are another factor, hitting the small and midsize suppliers that rely on price
by about 35 percent in 3Q08, pushing down monitor prices and closing the gap with conventional CRTs.
The majority of China’s makers concentrate on OEM orders, which account for 85 percent of output. There are companies such as Guangzhou ViewG Sci-Tech Co. Ltd, however, that only provide monitors under OBM.
While CRT monitors are on the decline in mature markets such as the US and Europe, the product line is still in demand in emerging economies in Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
As a result of low market demand in general, many suppliers face the challenge of having substantial unused capacity. To deal with the situation, they are either reducing the number of production lines or leaving the segment completely.
From three assembly lines for CRTs, Weihai Daewoo Electronics Co. Ltd now uses only one. The company currently makes about 3,500 units per month. It expects output to remain at that level throughout the year.
Shenzhen Realord Technology Co. Ltd also cut down its production lines for CRT monitors in 2Q09 in preparation for LCD monitor development.
Another interviewed company, Huike Electronics Co. Ltd, is planning to discontinue CRT monitors come 2010 after considering the narrow cost difference between CRT and LCD panels. The company sources such from Samsung.
Some makers, meanwhile, are using their assembly lines alternately to produce CRT and LCD monitors. For example, Guangzhou ViewG spent $140,000 to build one common CRT-LCD workshop. The line has a capacity of 8,000 CRT models and 10,000 LCD units. The company produces 4,000 CRT monitors per month.

enhancing the contrast ratio, viewing angle and life span of refurbished models.
Guangzhou ViewG aims to push low-end and midrange 17in monitors.
Last year, most of the supplier’s products used new CRTs. The company, however, noted that more buyers are now interested in units with refurbished CRTs. In response to this trend, the supplier estimates that nearly 70 percent of its products will adopt refurbished CRTs in the future. It aims to achieve performance stability between both types. The latest releases and refurbished models have 3 and 1-year guarantees, respectively.
