ABSTRACT
This report is based on the six months industrial training, which I was privileged to undertake at Zotel Autoworld Limited. It covers every aspect; ranging from the background, history, functions and objectives of SIWES, and services rendered by the company to which I was attached. Activities carried out by me during the program includes vehicle diagnostics, repairs, customization, machine operations, autobody works and basic general knowledge of the automotive systems and engine. .

SERVICES CARRIED OUT BY ZOTEL AUTOWORLD
ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT BY ME
Since Zotel Autoworld Limited is wholly a mechanical engineering company I was privileged to work in many of the subsections which ranged from auto repairs, Auto electrical works to the Auto body shop where I learnt and performed variety of processes and operations which includes; Vehicle diagnosis and diagnostic operations Vehicle maintenance, repairs and servicing operations Machine operations and uses Autobody repairs and works And general knowledge of the automotive (internal combustion IC
engine as well as some automotive systems.
Vehicle diagnosis and diagnostic operations are the tests we conduct to ascertain and identify the nature and cause of a fault, malfunction or anomalies and also determine the state of or capability of a component to perform its functions in a vehicle.
This process is very important in every standard Auto repair workshop because it gives a sense of direction to the repair technician.
Vehicle diagnosis can be carried out MANUALLY and ELECTRONICALLY/COMPUTERIZED.
MANUAL VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS; this when we as a technicians use our foresight and training to identify the fault of a vehicle.
COMPUTERISED VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS; this is the use of an electronic device (computer) to identify the actual fault of a vehicle. This operation is carried out using a diagnostic computer. Examples as available at Autoworld Limited are; AUTOBOSS, CARMAN SCAN lite, CARMAN VG+ SCAN. They vary in there functionalities.
VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS AND DIAGNOSTIC OPERATIONS
VEHICLE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER A vehicle diagnostic computer is an electronic device used to read ,
collect and interpret the fault codes which appear on the vehicle’s instrument panel or dashboard ( this is possible as recent vehicle’s major components now has sensors).
3.1.2. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR DIAGNOSIS A diagnostic computer must be used only by qualified personnel For effective and safe use of a diagnostic computer, operator must
follow normally accepted safety practices and procedures stipulated in manual of the computer.
Do not drop computer main body. Computer must always be covered by the shroud. Do not place computer upon distributor of vehicle strong
electromagnetic interference can damage the computer. A strong surge or electronic shock in the power supply line can
damage the computer power supply, so do not use under these harsh environment.
Do not short circuit battery terminals / risk of explosion. Failure to adhere to these identified conditions or actions which may
damage either the computer or vehicle.
1. We first locate the DLC (data link connector) terminal depending on the vehicle, it may be at the drive foot side underneath the dashboard, drive side, battery side inside the bonnet etc.
2. Then I determine the number of pins and adaptor to be used and connect to the DLC cable 16 then to the main body. (In some, make of the vehicles / no. of pins are been specified on the adaptor).
PERFORMING VEHICLE DIAGNOSIS
NOTE; vehicles with OBD-II communication protocol, power is supplied from the DLC cable without the need for an additional power supply (though the battery can power the system when not on board), for these vehicles all that is required is the vehicle data link terminals.
3. Now we place the device on the steering of the vehicle for a convenient use
4. put ON the vehicle ignition (in order to make active or awaken the ECM otherwise called the brainbox).
5. Press the device ON button and allow to boot. 6. Select START as displayed on the screen. 7. In the next display of information select vehicle diagnosis. 8. It will display requesting to know the kind of pins in use select
DLC cable 16 9. It will display continents that works car e.g. PACK 1, PACK 2,
EUROASIA PACK 1

DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODESP103P201P302 READ ERAS ACTUATION TEST
READ TROUBLE CODES; it will display the DTC- diagnostic trouble codes and it meanings. Assuming the vehicle came for only diagnostics you write out the trouble codes for the customers. AUTOBOSS and CARMAN VG+ can print out results
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODESP103:- INJECTOR NOOZLE SENSORP201:- SPARKPLUG CYLIDER 6P302:- OXYGEN SENSOR
ERASE: At this level, diagnostic trouble codes DTC are already displayed.ERAS- this will clear the DTC currently in the memory i.e. if problem relating to it had already been resolved. If not solved, the technician makes the necessary repairs and erase again. In case there are no trouble codes, it can either mean that; There is no faultThe problem is not electrical oriented (no sensor in that are) e.g. some chassis problems like camber, tie rod, shock etc. will not display.
HOW TO ERASE TROUBLE CODES There is a laydown steps on to erase trouble codes, it is done
according to instruction; Engine must not be on. Ignition should be on. Click on ERAS When it erases OFF ignition Remove key On both ignition and engine. If it is a solved problem it will erase from both the dashboard/
instruments panel and the device or it would reappear meaning problem not yet resolved.
Sometimes DTC comes up after problem has already been solved because it already has been stored in the brainbox.
ACTUATION TEST: This is a test carried out on a vehicle in order to know the current
state or operating condition of e.g. battery life, radiator etc. NOTE: to avoid trouble codes popping out on the dashboard after
repairs have been carried out. It is necessary to remove the battery terminals since some brain box are directly powered by the battery.
THE AUTOMOBILE BRAINBOX
The term brainbox as it is fondly called by technicians refers to as ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (ECU), POWER TRAIN CONTROL MODULE or ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE.
It is a computer unit which in modern cars and trucks, is used to control all functions of the electrical systems and sub systems of the vehicle. It is constructed in such a way that it can control each system installed within the car.
The body control module (BCM) and every sensor in a vehicle relates directly to the vehicle brain box. This is while diagnostic analysis is possible.
RECOMMENDATION TO THE INDUSTRIAL TRAINING FUND (ITF) THE UNIVERSITY.
All over the world, internship has been recognized as a very good means of impacting practical knowledge to students of tertiary institutions. In Nigeria, it is almost the only means available for students to gain practical experience in their respective fields of study. To make full advantage of the opportunities;
I highly recommend that the ITF should make it a point of duty to visit the student in his place of training so as to monitor them and give them the advice they need.
A stronger collaboration between the institution, industrial training fund and the various industries is needed so that placement and welfare difficulties currently been experienced by students will be reduced to a bearable minimum.
School supervisors should be given better motivation and support to carry out their assignment more efficiently. This will make the trainees more committed to the scheme. Hence, bringing the best out of them.
Finally, they should always pay the students their allowances as at when due.
With utmost delight and satisfaction, I gladly will say;My industrial training with zotel autoworld limited exposed me to all aspect of industrial life which included improving relationship and interaction with people. It has also improved my technical knowledge and technology skills in my area of study as a mechanical engineer.
