CONCEPT AND ORIGIN General 1. Army College of Dental Sciences, Secunderabad has been established by Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). The College aims at imparting high standard dental education coupled with the development of good moral character among the children of regular army personnel / army pensioners and war widows. The college was conceptualized in 1996 and started in 2001 at temporary location. It moved to the present location in 2003. The present college campus was inaugurated by the Chief of Army Staff, Gen N C Vij, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, ADC, COAS. The college is recognized by Dental Council of India and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi and is providing degree courses in BDS and MDS. 2. Location.

(a) The College is located at Secunderabad, approx 08 Kms from the Secunderabad Cantonment. Secunderabad is well connected by road, air and rail from all parts of the country. The College is located on Chennapur - CRPF road and is well connected by RTC buses operating from Secunderabad railway station. (b) The college campus is spread over 35 acres. It accommodates both Academic and residential facilities. The campus is complete in academic, treatment, and student comfort aspects. Modern labs, lecture halls, well stocked library, back up power, good clinical material and model hostel facilities for each student provide ideal conditions for pursuit of excellence in studies. The main college and hospital building is constructed over an area of 1, 14,087 sq ft and accommodates administrative offices, library, pre-clinical and clinical departments, laboratories and four lecture halls.

4. Affiliation/Approval. The College is affiliated to Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (Dr NTR UHS), Vijayawada (A.P) and is recognized by Dental Council of India (DCI), New Delhi and Min of Health & Family Welfare, New Delhi. In view of the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the affiliation will eventually be with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Warangal, Telangana (KNR UHS).

5. Programmes. The College is imparting dental education leading to award of Bachelors Degree in Dental Surgery, i.e. BDS and Master of Dental Surgery MDS (ie) courses in the following departments:-

(a) Prosthodontics, Crown & Bridge, Aesthetic Dentistry & Implantology.

(b) Periodontics & Implantology.

(c) Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics.

(d) Pedodontics & Preventive Dentistry

(e) Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics.

(f) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

The BDS course is of four years plus one year internship and the MDS course is for duration of three years. The academic year commences for BDS course from 01 August every year and for MDS course is from 01 May every year.

(a) Referral Centre. College runs a Satellite Clinic and Referral Centre at the

ECHS Poly Clinic location (Beside Military Hospital). Specific dental treatment is provided there and cases requiring major treatment are referred to the college. This has helped us tremendously to increase the OPD and provide meaningful and comprehensive treatment to ECHS patients.

(b) Teaching Faculty & Infrastructure. The teaching faculty consists of committed, self motivated and experienced teachers in Dental and Medical subjects. The college is attached to M.H. Secunderabad for teaching facilities in Oncology / Endoscopic Surgery, General Medicine / General Surgery, Casualty / Neuro Surgery / Anesthesia, ENT / Plastic Surgery, Opthtalmology / Orthopedic & Pediatrics.

(c) Department of Anatomy.

(i) Study of human body and various organs.

(ii) Mummification chamber.

(iii) Dissection hall.

(iv) Histology lab and an anatomy museum.

(v) Dissection hall with embalming facility.

(d) Department of Physiology & Biochemistry.

(i) Teaches various chemical reactions involved in biological procedures.

(ii) Estimate hemoglobin, RBC count, TLC, DLC, blood group determination.

(iii) Spirometry and other basic diagnostic tests.

(e) Department of Pharmacology.

(i) Teaching in medical and dental pharmacology.

(ii) Management of emergencies.

(iii) Clinical trials & Drug utilization studies.

(iv) Preparation of various dosage forms like solutions, syrups, mouth washes etc.

(f) Department of Pathology and Microbiology. Equipped with modern and latest instruments for undertaking the laboratory diagnostic work pertaining to clinical pathology, microbiology and serology which is essential for imparting efficient dental treatment to patients. Various diagnostic tests like CBP, Urine analysis, Blood Sugar tests, bacterial culture & sensitivity and selective serological tests are performed in the laboratories.

(g) General Medicine, General Surgery and General Anaesthesia. In addition to theory classes, the case studies and clinical exposure of those patients suffering from systemic and chronic ailments are also demonstrated by our doctors in the Military Hospital Secunderabad and students have a provision to assist and participate in surgeries being performed in operation theatre in MH.

(h) Department of Prosthodontics, Crown & Bridge, Aesthetic Dentistry & Implantology.

The department offers undergraduate and post graduate programme in Prosthodontics including Crown & Bridge, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics and Implantology. It is equipped with state of art infrastructure including a modern ceramic lab to provide specialized dental treatment including : -

(i) Complete dentures.

(ii) Removable partial dentures.

(iii) Cast partial dentures.

(iv) Crown & bridges

(v) All ceramic crown and bridges

(vi) Overdentures.

(vii) Replacement of teeth with Implants.

(viii) Post and Core treatment.

(ix) Maxillofacial prosthesis

(x) Smile designing with laminates and crowns.

(xi) Full mouth rehabilitation.

(j) Oral Pathology. All histological examinations of pathological tissues are carried out to aid in diagnosis of oral cancers, tumors and cysts, and various soft and hard tissue lesions. The department has all latest diagnostic tools. The laboratory of the department is well equipped with microscopes and other latest diagnostic tools.

(k) Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics.

Overview: The department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics at ACDS was established in the year 2001, with contemporary design and is equipped with modern dental units, radiographic room, latest instruments and materials .

The department is endowed with dedicated and experienced faculty, all of whom are committed to excellence in Education, Patient care and Research activity, and hence offers excellent UG & PG training programmes.

Aim:The department aims at offering highest quality of dental treatment to people of all strata at reasonable cost.

Pre-clinical phantom lab for UG and PG training programme.

Fully equipped dental chairs for greater ease and comfort.

Separate clinical areas for Undergraduate and Postgraduate students.

(l). Department of Periodontics & Implantology.

The department offers excellent teaching and specialized treatment in the

(i) Oral prophylaxis.

(ii) Root planning & curettage.

(iii) Gingivectomy & frenectomy.

(iv) Open flap debridement with or without bone grafts, including GTR.

(v) Root resection, Hemisection procedures. [

(vi) Apeicectomy and periapical surgeries.

(vii) Soft tissue – Root coverage procedure.

(viii) Smile enhancement and gingival esthetic procedures.

(ix) Ridge augmentation and socket preservation.

(x) Implant surgeries including sinus lift techniques, ridge split techniques.

(m) Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The department offers excellent teaching and specialist treatment in the following areas:-

(i) Simple extractions.

(ii) Surgical removal of wisdom teeth/other teeth.

(iii) Treatment of cysts and tumors of jaws.

(iv) Preliminary management of maxillofacial injuries.

(v) Treatment of fractures of the face (maxilla, zygoma and mandible).

(vi) Special procedures like pre prosthetic surgery.

(vii) Surgery for correction of esthetic deformities of face / scars.

(viii) Surgical treatment of bony ankylosis of jaws.

(ix) Treatment of facial infections.

(x) Treatment of neuralgias is performed.

(xi) The department has an operation theatre with all facilities for management of trauma patients and various surgeries are performed in this department.
