3MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX SKATE PLAZA | CONCEPT DESIGN REPORT

INTRODUCTION

CONVIC HAVE BEEN COMMISSIONED TO DELIVER A SKATE PLAZA CONCEPT DESIGN ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROPOSED COMMUNITY PARKLAND IN RIDGEHAVEN, TEA TREE GULLY.

This document outlines the design process for the concept design and identifies the considerations for opportunities and possibilities for the holistic integration of an active youth recreation precinct with landscape amenity, supporting infrastructure, circulation and access.

BASELINE INFORMATION An Active Play Area Plan Concept Report was developed in October 2014. The report builds upon the original Modbury Sporting Complex Master Plan 2011-2040 of which the active zone is part of the first stages.

The Active Play Area Plan identified the need for a new skate facility, particularly with the removal of the old steel half pipe that was deemed unfit for use.

The plan also identifies a play and public facilities and landscaping approach. These will be considered in the development of the skate plaza to ensure a holistic concept design is provided for the entirety of the active precinct. This will also explore the inclusive design approach of wider youth recreation and integrating a diverse range of youth activities.

Further site analysis was carried out by Convic and is summarised in the SD01 Site Analysis Report (20.08.15). This further informs the development of the skate plaza design being proposed in this report.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION As part of the Modbury Sporting Complex Master Plan two rounds of consultation were carried out, with a further workshop focused solely around the development of the Skate Plaza. Community input into the skate plaza is as follows:

01MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX MASTER PLAN - STAGE 1Nov/Dec 2012 • Facility is well located for ease of access by private and public

transport.• Strong support to replace the existing half-pipe.• Indication that the old facility was good for all skill levels.• Participants keen to replace the facility with a similar type of

transition style skate facility.

MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX MASTER PLAN - STAGE 2Apr/May 2013 • Lighting the skate facility strongly favoured• Basketball/Multi- games courts commended.• Some opposition from the nearby retirement village.• Importance on quality of design and construction finish.

WORKSHOP SUMMARY - MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX: ACTIVE PLAY AREA PLANMay 2014• Importance for amenities including, shade, lighting and seating. • Integrating greenery, through garden gaps and planter boxes.• Consideration towards the location of the skate plaza and relative

play space.• Allowing for progression of skill levels. • Catering to various wheeled sports disciplines. • Ensure the design allows sufficient space for approach and recovery

from tricks.• Create and inform skate space/plaza over a traditional skate park.• Elements to include such as, steps, curved walls, transition walls,

planter boxes, • Half pipe or spine is not required within the design.• Develop sculptural elements that will be an iconic draw card for the

park.• Textures such as bricks were considered interesting.

CONCEPT DESIGN REPORT | MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX SKATE PLAZA

SITE CONTEXT The skate plaza is sited 2km north of Modbury’s civic park and main shopping precinct and 17km north of Adelaide’s CBD and is ideally located within the Modbury Sports Complex. The site is easily accessible, positioned adjacent to Golden Grove Road and on regular bus routes.

SKATE CONTEXT To provide a well distributed and varied skate experience within the Tea Tree Gully LGA, an assessment of TTG’s current provision is required.

TTG currently offers one major skate facility for the region, The Golden Fields Skate Park. It is sited 5km north of the proposed skate plaza and consists of a variety of concrete transition and street obstacles. A large facility in size, appealing to the many facets of skate, BMX, scooter and inline users of varying skill levels. It tends to favour BMX and scooter

rides due to the large scale of individual obstacles. The park is showing signs of aging and does not reflect current skate trends. There are also two nearby facilities of note, Pooraka Skate Park (9km from site) and Paradise Skate Park (7km from site).

These are all to be considered with respect to the development of the new skate plaza to ensure a varied provision of skate, not only within TTG but also within the wider region.

02 DESIGN VISION

BRINGING A CONTEMPORARY ACTIVATED YOUTH FACILITY TO THE MODBURY SPORTING COMPLEX’S ACTIVE PLAY AREA, AND TO THE WIDER TEA TREE GULLY REGION.

As part of the Skate Plaza a design vision has been developed to guide the proposed facility design, this is as follows:

The Skate Plaza is to become a unique, iconic and site responsive multipurpose, multigenerational facility aiming to complement the proposed uses and facilities identified within the Modbury Sporting Complex Master Plan. The skate facility will become the central hub for the young people and broader community.

SITE RESPONSIVE The atmosphere of the site is strongly characterised by the existing mature vegetation. The proposed site offers huge opportunity for active play areas, natural shade amenity and an existing natural landscape feature. These existing qualities will be maintained where possible to give the active play zone instant maturity and harness a sustainable landscape approach.

A dividing fence has been removed from site, creating opportunity for direct and varied routes through the site via a new path network.

The existing landforms will be adjusted to accommodate new active programs, with overland water flow being maintained as is. This will offer opportunity to embrace sustainable landscape techniques through natural drainage systems along the western boundary of the site.

COMMUNITY REFLECTIVE UNIQUE, INTERESTING PLAZA ELEMENTSAcknowledging the current user style, the design of the facility will look to incorporate a number of street/plaza skate elements. The aesthetic, technical and materiality of obstacles will appeal to a plaza style, and with consideration given to sculptural and unique rideable pieces. Particular street elements will include skateable planter boxes, kicker to kicker gaps, banks, ledges, rails and garden gaps.

A small amount of transition will be included within the design, such as a banked walls and quarter pipes, in order to provide flow throughout the park and to expand the use for scooter and BMX users.

The facility will be designed to cater for a range of abilities, allowing users in the facility to progress by developing their skills from beginner to an advanced level in a safe and creative manner.

SUPPORTING AMENITIESTo ensure a central community space with comfort of users, the facility is to offer a number of social opportunities. The provision of areas of shade and refuge through the day are to be considered. As well as ongoing activation potential of community events, competitions and workshops.

The inclusion of timed lights should be a priority for the facility. This will assist in activating the facility particularly during the summer, in order to avoid the heat of the day and to maximise potential activation in winter months.

INTEGRATIONThe skate facility design is to be integrated into the existing and anticipated landscape of the proposed active play area. Consideration of the physical and aesthetic links made between the skate plaza design and the proposed and existing landscape will create a holistic integrated facility for use by the broader community. The park will look to include other recreational facilities such as basket ball and play areas.

DRAFT CONSULTATION FEEDBACK A community consultation workshop was held on 15.10.15, where a variety of local community members, future park users and council members were asked to give feedback on a draft Concept Design Plan.

This aim of the workshop was to ensure that the facility’s outcome is one that has full community involvement endorsement.

The presentation of the initial design thinking and direction aimed to provide the community reference group a clear direction and understanding of the type of facility, a sense of scale and details of individual obstacles.

Overall, the design was well received, with the community feedback process raising the following items:

• Remove the small circular grass planter located in the centre of the cantilevered flat bank, allowing for a less technical and a better flowing section.

• Possibility of including a Mini Ramp with an In and Out.• Adding coping to Log Ledge across grass gap obstacle and

possibly including a rail as another form of crossing. • Remove the concrete curbing along the shortest section of the

grass gap.• Feature a large full length ledge, running alongside the longest

straight edge of the grass area.• Include a 4-5 foot spine, preferably located where the manual

pad is now and possibly change the large banks at the right of the park to quarter pipes to create better flow into the spine.

• Include lighting within the design so that park users can feel safer and also make use of the park for longer periods of time.

• Include a quarter pipe to bank jumps box within the park. • Include a drinking bubbler • Add back rests to seats.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

LIGHTING The lighting palette aims to create a usable, iconic and safe night time space. This will be achieved through several lighting types and techniques, such as flood lighting for active sport usability.400 Watt Area Flood Lighting on a 15m column.

Lighting can be designed to be implemented within the skate plaza construction, or as a secondary project. Conduits will be considered and allowed for within the skate plaza design.

Position to provide even distribution of light to mitigate shadows in skate landing zones.

PLANTING The planting palette aims to enhance the natural feel of the existing parkland setting.

Trees have been selected to provide varying scale and build a canopy structure between the existing casuarina to one side of the plaza and the Eucalyptus camaldulensis to the other.

Grasses and shrubs will be used in large swathes, providing a subtle movement that reflects the activity within the skate plaza.

FINAL DEVELOPED DESIGN MOVING FORWARD As part of the ongoing engagement process the final concept design outlined in this report was presented to community for final endorsement. The design was displayed online from the 29th Oct till the 4th Nov 2015 allowing the community the final opportunity to provide comment and input into the developed design.

Overall the design was very well received and addressed the comments made from the draft concept community workshop. Some minor alterations were suggest which were as follows:

• Increase depth and provide additional hip in the bowl• Replace the bank wall ride with an A-frame ledge• Remove the pole jam obstacle • Remove terraced walls to provide larger bowl

The above feedback will be addressed moving forward into the detailed design development and finalised in the construction drawing package.
