Balance

•  a feeling of visual equality in shape, form, value, color, etc.

• Balance can be symmetrical or evenly balanced or asymmetrical and un-evenly balanced.

• Objects, values, colors, textures, shapes, forms, etc., can be used in creating a balance in a composition.

Principles of Design 3

• When objects are of equal weight, they are in balance.

• If you have several small items on one side, they can be balanced by a large object on the other side.

•  Visual balance works in much the same way. It can be affected not only by the size of objects, but also their value (ie. lightness or darkness, termed visual weight).

Symmetrical (Formal) Balance

• Mirror image balance.• Sometimes they are completely identical (often

seen in architecture).

Exact Symmetry

Radial Symmetry

• Rotating around a center point

Axial Symmetry

• Having two opposing repeats, one on each side of an axis

Translational Symmetry

• When an object is relocated to another position while maintaining its general or exact orientation.

• Can be used to create patterns.

Asymmetrical Balance

• Sometimes called Occult Balance.• Strong Variety of sizes to show distance• Lack of symmetry.• Asymmetry can be used as a design tool to create

points of interest and organize visual hierarchy within a group of similar elements. It creates disorder, which can call attention to certain points of a design through distinction.
