Objectives

• To instill life skills into youths to live better

and healthier life.

 –  To know their healthcare needs better.

 – To develop essential skills to cope up with theadverse conditions pertaining to health.

 – To dispel myths and clarify misconceptions

regarding various health issues and events.

• To increase capacity of the education systemin training of adolescents and youths for

Basic Strategies

• Programme implementation through NGO incoordination with Universities’ trained RRC In-charge/ Programme officers (Lecturers) and

Peer educators.• NGO staff will train the nodal teachers and

peer educators with support from trainedresource persons.

• The nodal teachers and peer educators willtake interactive classroom sessions withstudents.

Health issues for Health Promotion 

 – Healthy Life Style and Stress & Strain free

Environment – Drug Addiction

 – Blood Donation Promotion

 – Life skill Development and good eating habits – Reproductive & Sexual Health including RTI/STI

and HIV/AIDS

Basic Strategies

• The sessions will be participatory and seek to

address the concerns of youths on growing up

through role-play, brainstorming and

discussion.

• The sessions will also address myths and

misconceptions that young people have about

health and reply to queries of youths by usingthe Question Box.

Role of Principals

•Formation of Red Ribbon Club advisorycommittee in college.

•Selection of two lecturers (Preferably onemale and another female) for Red Ribbon Club.

•Oversee and participate in theimplementation of Red Ribbon ClubProgramme, including development of youthinteractive programme, implementation and

evaluation of activities.

Role of Programme Officers

(Lecturers)•Principal will identify two lecturers from every

college for RRC Programme as Programme

Officers/Incharge RRC (preferably one male and

one female). NSS Programme Coordinatorshould be given this responsibility where this

post exist.

•The PO will work closely with the RRC/NGO toreach out to RRC members and other youth in

the institution through RRC volunteers.

Role of Programme Officers

•Responsible for overall coordination, planning,implementation, supervision and managementof RRC in the college.

•Supporting and facilitating the formation of RRC in the college/educational institution inclose coordination with NGO/RRC Coordinator.

•Organize and facilitate sensitization trainingfor Peer leaders in close coordination withNGO/RRC Coordinator.

Role of Programme Officers

•Liaison with the positive networks and othergovernment/non-government organizations inthe region for facilitating the activities of the

RRC.•Serving as resource person to impart technicalknowledge on youth related issues to RRCmembers and peer educators by youth friendlymethods.

•Facilitate to develop new IEC material (plays,songs, posters, slogans etc.)

•Gain in-depth knowledge about Life Skills,promotion of voluntary blood donation,Nutrition, mental health and Reproductive

health issues.•Mobilizing resources for the Club’s activities.

•Producing innovative BCC (Behavior Change

Communication) materials - slogans, jingles,posters, logos, handbill messages, songs andplays, etc.

•Actively participating in competitions andcommunity outreach programs inside andoutside the campus.

Operational Framework at

Institutional Level1.Organization will organize the advocacy andsensitization meeting of Principals/HODs to awarethem about the vulnerability of youths towards LifeSkills, Promotion of voluntary blood donation,

Nutrition, Mental health and Reproductive healthand need and concept of Red Ribbon Club (RRC)Programme.

2.The organization will also seek the permission forthe formation of RRC in the institution and oncethe permission approves, meeting with studentleaders will be sought to explain the concept and

importance of RRC.

3.An orientation workshop will be organizedwhereby two lecturers (Preferably one maleand one female, those are associated with

youths’ different programmes and havinginterest to work with youths) from eachcollege/ institution will be oriented on theRRC scheme.

The workshop will conclude with theinauguration of RRC.

4.Next, a meeting will be organized at everyinstitution/college level. Whereby the RC alongwith Programme Officer of the institution andstudent leaders will contact and mobilize as many

students as possible from all departments.Volunteers may also be selected at this stage.

5.Pamphlets, brochures and related IEC material

will be distributed before and during inaugurationof RRC. All IEC material will be supplied by GSACSin the State and Programme Officer will beresponsible for its timely procurement.

6.Screening of Life Skills, Promotion of voluntaryblood donation, Nutrition, Mental health andReproductive health related films etc. should beundertaken during the orientation and

inauguration on RRC. Such films could be procuredfrom GSACS.

7.When the youth participating in the programme

appear absorbed and motivated distribute themembership forms for voluntary enrolment inRRC.

8.The signed forms should be collected and thenames of the youth should be entered in theMembership Register. RRC Coordinator withsupport of Programme Officer will be responsible

for regular updating of the Register /forms.

9.The strength of the club can vary from 10 to 500voluntary members.

10.The activities of the RRC must be youthoriented, innovative and interactive that shouldgenerate active participation of youth and shouldprovide them with healthy edutainment.

11.Establishment of linkages with government

Departments/NGOs for increasing the access of 

youths to RTIs/STIs Treatment, Counseling and

Testing Services, Condom and PLWHA care andsupport services.

12.Organize Positive speaker bureau (PSB) in

colleges to dispel myths and misconceptions andreduce discrimination against PLWHA.

13.Class room sessions on five issues. The student

groups will be trained on issues relating to Life

Skills, Promotion of voluntary blood donation,

Nutrition, Mental health and Reproductive healthwhich leads them to adopt healthy life styles and

behavior change.

14.Activities like seminar, competitions, ralliesetc.

15.Arrange information kiosk and other

interactive activities in colleges.

Project Initiation and Progress

• So far 455 Colleges, 8 Universities and 8

Districts covered for RRC project in Gujarat.

• NIWCD was given the responsibility for RRC

project in the Surat in January 2009.

• Two Out Reach Workers for the project wereselected and trained at GSACS in Feb 09.

• Advocacy & Planning Workshop for

Principals of Colleges affiliated to VNSGU

organized on 16th

March 2009 at Sir P.T.Mahila College, Surat

• 21 Principals had participated in workshop.

• Participants were oriented about concept of Red Ribbon Club, its process as well as

activities.

• Some of the important suggestions of 

the participants in the workshop were:

Celebration of World AIDS Day as one of the

event of RRC.

Rally, Essay competition, Community awareness

programs like handbill distribution, drama can be

the events under RRC.

Question bank formation for questions of the

students and reply through College assembly or

through Newsletter on notice board.

Special sessions for Menstrual hygiene and

Health should be organized for girls.

Organization of Question-Answer sessions in

the presence of experts.

NSS fund can be utilized for RRC activities in

case of lack of fund.
