The Sunscreen Reminder Project

Persuasive Purpose To design a calendar application to aid graduate student runners

to apply sunscreen before outdoor run.

Industrial Design

Automatic Reminder

Can invite friends who will also receive reminder

User Description

• Grad student runner

• Has variable schedule & can’t run at the same time during the week

• Part of a community of peers

• Technologically savvy

• Already using Outlook, Google Calendar, or iCal for scheduling

• Often has multiple devices synched with calendar

• More attuned to sun damage issues than younger student

Calendar Reminder Sunscreen Use

Automatically, when Susan saves her run in her schedule, a “Sunscreen Reminder”, with alarm, is added into her calendar 15 minutes before their run.

15 minutes before her run, Susan receives the “Sunscreen Reminder” on her iPhone and/or her laptop.

Susan, a grad student, checks the weather online for the next week to figure out what days she will run outside.

Susan cross references her class schedule on her computerized calendar.

She picks a day and time time run, puts it into her calendar, and invites her friend Kelly.

Susan puts on sunscreen before her run.

Prototype of Sunscreen Reminder

• When a user schedules a run on his/her calendar, a “Sunscreen Reminder” is automatically scheduled 15 min. before the run

Automatic Reminder

Can invite friends who will also receive reminder

Features/Functionality

• Easy to use – once installed, anytime a run is scheduled, Sunscreen Reminder is added to calendar automatically

• Sunscreen Reminder can pop up on whatever device the user is using at the moment• Grad student calendars often synched with computer &

phone

• Computerized calendar alert provides and audio & visual reminder

• Any friend invited on the run can opt in to receive same automatic Sunscreen Reminder

Theoretical Justifications

• Grad students are already using computer calendar technology

• Grad student runners have to schedule runs around class time

• Grad student runners can use calendar invites to invite friends to join them on runs, naturally expanding the audience for the Sunscreen Reminder Project

• As a Grad Student myself, I understand technology habits more thoroughly than other demographics

Plans for User Testing

• Develop manual demo

• Test with 5 grad student runners of varying commitment levels

• Schedule one-on-one meetings for feedback on:

• Online calendar usage patterns:• Would they put their runs into their calendar if it helped them remember

sunscreen?• Do they follow their calendar alerts?

• Value of sunscreen protection while running outdoors:• Are grad student runners the right target audience?

• Does this work better when you have a smart phone with a calendar, or can this work if you just have email on your computer?

• Does this solution work better in the morning or the afternoon?

• Is a calendar reminder enough? Would they need a novel way to have sunscreen with them as they’re prepping for their run?

Shortcomings of Design

• Potential that grad students won’t schedule runs in their computer calendars

• Students may have forgotten sunscreen if outside their room when the alarm goes off

• Alarm may not be most effective call to action for sunscreen / students may tune it out

• The reminder may not be the barrier to action – it may be that students don’t have the right product, for example

Expansion - What else is possible?

• Other form factors or ID possibilitieso Add visual cueso Add auditory cues, such as songs with alarmo Add product recommendations

• Other features and interactionso Can expand upon running community to add routes, running

tips, shoe info, race info, etc.

Next Steps in Design Process

• Create non-automated demo

• Test demo with 5 grad student runners with different training intensities• Get verbal feedback in one-on-one meeting

• Work with developer to create automatic demo• Test audio, visual, etc. possibilities of automatic demo

• Test with 30 grad student runners• Source runners through Facebook• Consider offering sport sunscreen as part of the project• Require survey feedback as part of participation in test

study
