PREFACE This handbook is designed as a guide for both parents/guardians and students to give specific details and policies of the Southwest Junior High Band.
Band members are required to follow the policies, rules and regulations of the Springdale Public Schools and the Southwest Junior High Bands. School rules and policies are enforced at all times that a member is directly or indirectly involved in any activity sponsored by or in the name of Southwest Junior High School. School policy shall have priority over band policy in the event of any policy conflict.
The band directors shall have authority to suspend or amend any band policy at any time deemed necessary in the best interest of the overall band program.

Junior High Band Members and Parents: On behalf of the entire Springdale Band Program, let me commend you on your decision to continue your study of instrumental music at one of HarBer High School’s Junior High programs. Because of your willingness to “stick with it”, you will have many opportunities this year as a Springdale band member to grow musically, represent our school, and have lots of fun. Our team of eight band directors is committed to helping each student at our schools achieve their highest potential in musicianship and citizenship. Our motto is “Taking Pride in Excellence”… which means that we, as a team, are focused on doing our absolute best work, both in our band rooms and in every class. The cumulative GPA’s of our band students are among the highest of any team in the school, while we have one of the lowest percentages of academically ineligible students. Study after study has shown that a rigorous study of music results in higher academic achievement, as evidenced by higher scores on standardized tests, college entrance exams such as the ACT, and a higher percentage of college enrollments. College scholarship opportunities for our graduating seniors are abundant. For the past two years, every student that auditioned for a college scholarship, whether as music major or nonmusic major, received a significant scholarship up to and including full tuition. For most of these students, it was when they were in junior high school that they decided to commit themselves to daily practice, get help from their directors, and push themselves to honors like AllRegion Band. It was in junior high that they decided to take “Pride in Excellence.” This document outlines in detail the rules, requirements, and grading procedures for your junior high band. Our district has enjoyed over 30 years of having one of the best band programs in the nation, and this document is the result of what many band directors have learned over the course of that time. We want to provide you, as the parent and student, the absolute best experience possible in our program, and following the guidelines in this document will help you do just that. Again, congratulations on your decision to continue in the Southwest Band program! We welcome you. Jeremy Ford Director of Bands

JUNIOR HIGH BAND ENSEMBLES The Southwest Junior High Bands offer three ensembles during the 1st semester of the school year. They are: Marching Band, Concert Band and Varsity Band. The Southwest Junior High Bands will also offer three ensembles during the 2nd semester of the school year. They are: Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Varsity Band.
MARCHING BAND
Marching Band (1st semester only) is an ensemble comprised of the top musicians in the program. Placement in the Marching Band is determined by audition in April of the previous school year. These students will perform at all home 9th grade football games along with a Veteran’s Day Assembly performance, Christmas Concert, etc. Students participating in the Marching Band are the most “visual” part of the program and are held to the highest performance and behavioral expectations.
SYMPHONIC, CONCERT AND VARSITY BAND
Concert Band, Varsity Band and Symphonic Band (2nd semester only) are groups that focus on the development and improvement of the individual musician through a large ensemble setting. These groups will perform at fall concerts, Christmas Concerts, concert assessment, 6th grade recruiting concerts, Spring Concerts etc. Much emphasis is given to the preparation and high level of performance of the individual student’s all-region and concert assessment music. Auditions for the 2nd semester ensembles will take place in early November over select all-region exercises and scales. Symphonic Band is the top ensemble composed of the top musicians in the school. As with the Marching Band, it is also one of the most “visual” part of the program and students are held to the highest performance and behavioral expectations. **Schedule changes are made to accommodate the changes in personnel.**
ALL-REGION CLINIC AND SOLO AND ENSEMBLE
In the effort to move students along musically, directors highly recommend that all students prepare All-Region material. Sectionals will be offered both during class and after school. This material enables students to grow individually and will be used for band auditions mid-November. All-Region Auditions will be held in early January.
Solo and Ensemble contest provides another opportunity for individual musical growth. Students may choose to do solos, duets, trios, and quartets in addition to large woodwind and brass choirs. This competition will be held at the end of April.

ATTENDANCE, TARDINESS, AND PERFORMANCES
The Southwest Junior High Bands are highly visible performing ensembles. Attendance
and punctuality at all rehearsals and performances is required. Students are expected to have all
necessary materials and be in the right place at the right time. The only absences considered excused are as follows: family emergency, personal illness, important family event (i.e. wedding or funeral), schedule conflict with another school activity (should be discussed ahead of time), or another extreme circumstance as defined by the directors. Unexcused absences may result in grade deduction, loss of performance opportunities, and removal from the program. Please avoid scheduling doctor, dentist or other appointments during rehearsals or performances. In each case, the band director will determine which absences are excused.
Students who miss rehearsals within two weeks of a performance risk losing performance privileges.
SECTIONAL REHEARSALS
Beginning the week of September 8th, each student will be placed in sectional rehearsals (group practice for like instruments). Sectionals are an opportunity for students to rehearse in like instrument groups. Weekly sectional attendance is required. Directors hope to be able to schedule most sectionals during the band class period.
ALL SECTIONAL REHEARSALS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL BAND MEMBERS.
If a student is absent the day of their sectional, they must make it up before or after school to receive their points for the missed sectional.
**EXTRA FULL BAND REHEARSALS MAY BE ADDED AS NEEDED AFTER SCHOOL**
BAND FACILITIES BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL & PRIVATE LESSONS
Directors will be available for extra help most days before and after school. This is an excellent time for lessons and make up work. Please encourage your child to take advantage of these time and the extra help. Private lessons will also be available and directors encourage all students to take them. Directors will send home information notifying you of these lesson teachers and their fees.

CONDUCT
The Springdale Bands are a source of pride for students, alumni, fans, faculty, administration, and community members. The behavior of each individual band member reflects on the entire program. Discipline problems are not present in the SWJH Bands. Please represent yourself, fellow members, the program, and the community with class at all times. This includes online activity on social network sites, websites, and blogs. Permanent dismissal from the band and a failing grade may result from more serious behavior problems. Remember, it is a PRIVILEGE to be in the SWJH Bands, it is NOT a requirement.
GRADING
Students in the Southwest Junior High Band are held to the highest standard of performance. That standard is only met through hard work, practice and dedication. Along with a daily participation grade, students will be graded on attendance to performances, sectionals and playing tests throughout the school year. If a student forgets their instrument, does not have their music/pencil, is tardy or is not prepared, they will not receive the daily participation points.
**ALL PERFORMANCES ARE REQUIRED**
Additional performances may be added to the band calendar schedule at any time. These scheduled performances will still be considered required. We will give you plenty of advanced notice for any additional required dates.
GRADES/POINTS AVAILABLE EXAMPLE
Performances (football games, concerts, etc.) 500 points each Weekly Sectionals 100 points each Playing tests 50-100 points each Daily Participation Grade 20 points (100 points per week)
AT HOME PRACTICE/INSTRUMENT STORAGE
Students are expected to take their instrument home and practice daily. Daily practice will insure that the student musician is developing at the appropriate pace. Students will be provided with a designated area to store their instruments during the school day in the band room. Instruments may not be left in the band room overnight. Students who play percussion, tuba, euphonium, baritone saxophone, and contra bass clarinet etc. are expected to make use of open band room times before and after school. Students who are unable to make use of open band room practice time will be expected to take home their music and mouthpiece/mallets/practice pad/etc. for private practice.

FEE INFORMATION 1. $35 - BLACK BAND SHOES: Directors will measure you for shoe sizes and order the
shoes during the first full week of school. The SWJH Bands uses a specific type and brand of shoe. These shoes are also the same shoes that all other bands in the Springdale School District use. Payment of $35 for the shoes is due August 28TH. If you already have band shoes, try them on to make sure they fit…and also please inform the band director that you already have a pair so another pair will not be ordered in your name. The above cost also includes 1 pair of long black dress socks. Only long black dress socks are to be worn with the full uniform. SHORT, ATHLETIC STYLE SOCKS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE! Not wearing the proper socks with the full band uniform will result in the student not being allowed to perform in that performance and/or a reduction of the student’s grade.
2. $20 - UNIFORM CLEANING: There will be a $20 fee for uniform cleaning that will
be paid when the uniform is distributed.
3. $15 - BAND T-SHIRT and INSTRUMENT TAG: The cost for the SWJH Band

SCHOOL OWNED INSTRUMENTS
If you play a school owned instrument of any kind, your instrument will be issued to you. A school owned instrument is one that is purchased by the school for students to play. There is an $80 instrument maintenance fee ($40 per semester) that will be charged at the beginning of the school year. Once paid, the instrument(s) remain in your care. Students using a school owned instrument are responsible for the general care of the instrument. At the end of the school year, all school owned instruments must be checked in for inventory. When you check out your instrument, a band director will do a follow up inspection of the instrument to make sure that no undue harm has come to the instrument. If your instrument has become damaged in your care, you will be responsible for the instrument’s cost of repair.
