Erik Satie: Memoirs of a Pear-shaped LifeAnne Lovett, piano David Bamber, narrator

Eric Satie was a complex, eccentric and lonely man. Devised and written by Meurig Bowen, Memoirs of a Pear-shaped Life showcases the full, startling breadth of the composer’s piano output and interweaves Satie’s diaries and reflections on his riotously varied, chaotically creative and intermittently dysfunctional life.

The music includes many of Satie’s most enduring keyboard works: Gymnopédies, Gnossienees, Je te veux, Le piège de Méduse, Avant-dernières pensées, Le Piccadilly and Heures séculaires.

End time 9.15 pm without interval, drinks will be available when doors open.

Tickets: £32, £25, £18, £15, students and under 18s £10 off from www.sje-oxford.org/events/tickets or www.musicatoxford.com, tel 01865 244806

Welcome to SJE Arts at St John the Evangelist churchJanuary 2018 heralds the start of our 5th SJE International Piano Series, comprising 9 concerts and featuring some of our favourite musicians from earlier series. It will also be possible to come to a pre-concert dinner in the college dining room before some of the concerts.

Following the success of 2017 we are expanding our SJE Next Generation Series to 6 concerts featuring really exceptional young artists early in their career.

It is possible to buy heavily discounted season tickets to both series. I do hope you will be able to come some if not to them all.

Profits this year will go towards the installation of a new and bigger organ, a much needed addition to our musical facilities.

Oxford Bach ChoirRossini: Petite Messe Solennelle

Rossini joked that he could not decide whether his Petite Messe Solennelle was ‘musique sacrée’ (sacred music) or ‘sacrée musique’ (damned music), and its jaunty and memorable melodies have enchanted and surprised audiences ever since. Yet Rossini also shows himself a master of counterpoint in the magnificent fugues which end the Gloria and Credo.

The Oxford Bach Choir pairs Rossini’s late masterpiece with a selection of motets by his younger contemporary, the Austrian Anton Bruckner. Best known for his great symphonies, Bruckner also wrote much sacred music throughout his life, and his beauti-ful and dramatic motets represent a high point in nineteenth-century religious music.

Oxford May Music FestivalThe 11th annual Oxford May Music Festival will again be fully resident at St John the Evangelist and once more, we will use the delightful Cloister area for an exciting photographic exhibition.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Frank Close, well known author and broadcaster, who on Saturday 5 May will tell us a tale of spies, scientists and music in the Manhattan Project, which sounds like it could have been written by John le Carré but actually happened. Other events include lectures on Gravitational Waves and on how we can use land management to feed 12 billion people by 2100.

Amongst the musical highlights, Craig Ogden plays guitar chamber music, Ailish Tynan sings Strauss’ unforgettable Four Last Songs and Florilegium join us again for our traditional Sunday evening Baroque concert. The Festival begins with the renowned Silver-Garburg Piano Duo performing Schubert and Mendelssohn and ends with Brahms’ first String Sextet and Korngold’s youthful and vivacious Piano Quintet.
