Talk with Ákos

Hi everyone, here we are!

3rd edition • Aug 6th

Ákos KovácsWednesday night at the Inn, Kristóf Réder, our media guru had a quick talk with Ákos Kovács, the famous Hungarian singer. Ákos grew up in Budapest, studied at the Fazekas Mihály Grammar School. He got his diploma in economics. His musical career started with the band called Bonanza Banzai and continued when he started a solo career with his first album, Karcolatok. Since then he’s recorded countless Hungarian and English albums which have all gone gold and platinum. In 2002, he recieved the Hungarian Order of Merit.

Ákos talked to the scouts about today’s young people, the singer’s credibility and about scouting, among many other things. For an example, we found out that the scout working at the gate when Ákos arrived didn’t recognize him. He only let the celebrity in (who by the way, said he only came to the camp to talk to scouts) after a long conversa-tion on his walkie-talkie. Expo tents– What did you show everyone in the Czech tent?– An old game that comes from the Indians called Lacrosse. Other programs include modeling and building small vehicles. You can glue together pa-per cars and for the really creative scouts, there are makeable souvenirs to take home – consisting of rock, beads, wood or wire. Our special surprise is „podsada”, which is a tent made of wood and covers that the Czech people have been using in every scout camp since 1913.

Meanwhile, at the Polish tent we hopped over the little fence and asked the participants, what they are doing there.– I just finished making a pom-pom and now I’m painting a klamerka (clothes pin). – Taking a look around we found out that we can read about Polish celebrities!

The Heroes’ Tent awaits the partici-pants every day at the Welsh Gate for a half-day program. There’s a yurt (an ancient nomad tent) at the entrance and inside we can try out many types of weapons (e.g.: archery, sword fight-ing, daggers, throwing stars, javelins).

We can also learn how to use the bullwhip (if we are skillful enough), with the help of the early medieval Hungarian warriors. But the most popular attrac-tion is airsoft: brave volunteers are dressed from top to bottom in thick camouflage clothes and only then can they start fighting in the forests from base to base. Next to all these activities, there’s a Criminal Corner where we can take photos in the gallows. Don’t miss out on it!

Heroes’ Tent

V4Village - report

In the Hungarian tent we found out about some of the most important Hungarian symbols and heard a little bit about the history of the country. We could also see traditional clothing next to some Hungar-ian inventions: e.g. soap, a ballpoint pen, vitamin C, Rubik’s cube and undergarments, which were brought to Europe by ancient Hungarians!

Many people were constantly playing different games near the tents which were held by different nations. We also stopped by the 2011 Swedish Jamboree tent, where we received a small s u r p r i s e because we solved a puzzle.

Gastronomy tentOur last stop was at the gastronomy tent, where we tasted the Polish pierogi, the Czech brambora and the Hungarian túró rudi. They were especially good, because we made them ourselves!

- What are our options when going hiking?- You can discover Hungary’s hidden, but beautiful natural values. You can roll around in the flowery fields, rest in the shadows of the old trees. Test your boundaries and yourself in tough situations!- What are the goals of the hike?- The participants can visit the Wild Park in Buda-keszi, the city of Szentendre, or if it rains, they can go sightseeing in Budapest! You can go hiking in the beautiful mountains of Buda, arriving in Nagy-Szénás, Kutya Mountain, the Little Hárs Mountain, the János Mountain, Normafa, and don’t forget the Szemlő-hegyi Cave! If you’re bored, the Swiss Trial is a sure chance for fun!- What are your observations so far?- Everyone should bring a raincoat and lots of water that will enough for even longer hikes.- Why is this program useful?- The time spent and the obstacles tackled together bring people closer together, this is how connec-tions and friendships are made!

- Why do we need the „example sub-camp”?- Because the arriving contingents can see what a traditional Hungarian scout camp would look like. The constructions were made by Hungarians before the beginning of the camp which took three hard days of work! Most of the constructions were built just so people could see them eventhough we don’t use some of them. We made Eng-lish signs to explain all of them. We recycle everything and pay attention to all the rules in the subcamp. We constructed all of it so that ev-erything can be used even if it rains.- A great example is the backpack hanger. Which construction are you most proud of?- There are two. One of them is the particle accelera-tor - this is also the most popular one and that’s why most people come in the first place. Every night we have campfires here. The other one is the subcamp gate, which is bigger than the camp’s Main Gate. We built it without the use of cement or screws, only natural materials.- Which contingents are here and do they enjoy it?- There is one Transylvanian, one Czech, one Slo-venian, one Polish, one Swiss and two Hungar-

ian troops camping here. The scouts get along very well together and try to take the diversities caused by the different nationalities easily. We have another contingent every day that takes care of the prayers, the firewood and the cleanliness, so that also helps. Sometimes in the evenings, the campers gather spontaneously for some sing-ing with a guitar. Everyone can show others their own customs and get to know foreign traditions. - What do the guests think?- We’ve only heard positive reactions and we’re glad to show anyone around anytime, that’s what we’re here for!

Why do participants like these programs?

Pancakery Because our motto is: cheap, tasty and fast! Everyone loves pancakes, but we sell more Lán-goses, because it’s new and different. Nothing proves the popularity of the Pancakery more than the fact that we’ve made 500 pancakes out of 20 kgs of flour, 120 eggs and of course, a secret ingredient! :)

Teahouse Our main attracting factor is the cozy and stylish furnishing, the romantic candlelight and the Finnish design elements. We recommend you arrive in groups because 4 teas cost 900 HUF, but if there are 4 different nationalities in the group, the 4 teas cost only 800 HUF! We have a huge selection of teas and we also offer coffee and hot chocolate. So far, we’ve sold at least 180 liters of beverages!

Walk-in-Activities Participants show much interest in the Walk-in-Activities. The sumo and the polifoam balance duel are the most popular! Starting thursday night, there’ll also be more games to choose from: live board games (chess, Twister, Sorry!) and there’s a cinema, too. We are looking for teams to sign up for the group games.

Interview with Péter Hornyák - San leader

Sabina’s notesThe last couple of days have been anything but boring. First of all, we had soup! I think all of us have been waiting for this. The serving line was longer than any other day.

As my job isn’t too demanding, I got to do some of the activities. If you feel creative, try the tents behind the Csűr. You can work with leather, beads, wool or clay. Also, in case of bad weather, the Hungarian folk dances will heat you up for sure.

Yesterday, I had a bit of too much energy, I went to see all the fights. At the Heroes’ Tent you can learn how to fight with one or two swords. The Walk-in- Activities give you a few options as well.

The poli-foam fight is a bit more cha l leng ing ‘cause you have to balance standing on a log, but the Sumo is extremely fun, both to watch, and to play.

Massage Salon Four girls wait for participants for a short, relax-ing massage, so everyone can turn in to bed relaxed and re-freshed after a long and full day! The massage salon is open to campers from 8 PM to 10 PM. Come early, there’s going to be a long line!

Traditional Hungarian Dance House: You can learn not only traditional Hungarian danc-es, but circle dances from Moldva, as well! The dance house is extremely popular! We recommend it for people who wish to dance to music that’s a bit different, but still want to have a good time!
