THE BIRTHPLACE OF BRITISH MOTORSPORT AND AVIATION

Brooklands was the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit and the site of many engineering and technical achievements for 80 years of the 20th Century. Today, the

Museum displays a wide range of Brooklands-related motorsport and aviation exhibits, and is the home of the London Bus Museum. It is an adventure for all ages and, with the

Sunbeam Café in our Edwardian Clubhouse and a shop offering an impressive range of gifts and souvenirs, the Museum is the perfect place to observe, appreciate, enjoy and learn

about Britain’s unsurpassed aviation and motor sport heritage.

They all raced at Brooklands! See the banked Race Track, and Test Hill and wander through the Motoring Village with its original tuning sheds where record-breaking cars such as Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Birds were housed.

They now house John Cobb’s 24-litre Napier-Railton, holder of the Brooklands lap record, set in 1935, at an average speed of 143.44 mph! In addition there is an ex-tensive collection of historic four and two-wheeled racing machines.

On the ground floor of the 1907 Clubhouse, you can enjoy the period atmosphere and the evocative room settings with the Barbara Cartland Room, the Billiard Room, the Clerk of the Course’s Office and a large and fascinating collection of memorabilia and artefacts from the halcyon days of Brooklands.

THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN AND THEIR FLYING MACHINES

Discover 100 years of British aviation at Brooklands! There is a replica of A V Roe’s biplane which was used for flight trials here in 1908, the WW2 Wellington Bomber raised from Loch Ness, a Hurricane fighter being restored by volunteers, and the

‘Dambusters’ bouncing bomb invented by Barnes Wallis who worked at Brooklands.

The giant Vickers Vimy biplane is here along with numerous other Vickers/BAC-built aircraft, all with a Brooklands heritage, including the Viking, Varsity, Viscount, Vanguard, VC-10, BAC 1-11 and, of course, Concorde.

18,664 aircraft, representing 261 different types, made their maiden flights out of Brook-lands, more than any other aircraft manufac-turing site in Europe - a record that stands to this day!

Life offered few greater thrills than flying supersonic Concorde. To feel the unbelieveable surge of power on take-off.

To see the sky turn deep blue at the edge of space. To sense the nudge in the back when the re-heats were lit to send her through the sound barrier and well beyond.

To enjoy first-class-plus service, champagne and exclusive cuisine as one travelled a mile every two-and-a-half seconds!

She was sheer charisma and her stunning shape exuded spectacular, breathtaking grace and power

- a sight that turned heads skywards wherever she flew the world over. That she no longer flies is a matter of great sadness but at Brooklands Museum

we are committed to keeping the Concorde dream alive. Everything we do with Concorde is dedicated to all whose work and lives were

encompassed by the supersonic phenomenon that is Concorde - to the pioneer designers, engineers and aviators;

to those who skilfully flew and maintained her during 27 years of airline service; to the passengers who benefitted from, or were simply thrilled by supersonic flight;

to the countless millions who admired her, and finally to the Brooklands team of volunteers, without whose sterling efforts and

thousands of hours freely given, Concorde would not be a jewel in the Museum’s crown. She and all those people will remain unforgettable.

Concorde G-BBDGTHE FIRST BRITISH PRODUCTION CONCORDE

THE FIRST AIRCRAFT TO FLY 100 PEOPLE AT MACH 2 TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND

Brooklands can be truly said to be the home of Concorde! The first UK meeting between Britain and France to discuss Concorde took place here and more than 30% of every Concorde airframe, British and French, was

manufactured here.

Now her flying days are over, we are proud to have Concorde G-BBDG at the Museum, in addition to the very Concorde Simulator on which all British Airways flight crew trained.

We also have the 40% scale model that used to grace the entrance to the tunnel leading to the terminals at London Heathrow! She is now proudly displayed as our ‘Gate Guardian’ at the entrance to the Museum.

G-BBDG was the third Concorde built in Britain and this country’s first production Concorde.

Her maiden flight took place from Filton, Bristol on February 13, 1974, piloted by Brian Trubshaw and Brian Calvert, and she carried out a large part of the certificationwork that paved the way for Concorde fly-ing in commercial service between 1976 and 2003. She visited Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Bombay, Cape Town, Casablanca, Doha, Dubai, Nairobi, Tehran, Madrid and Singapore. and she was the first Concorde to fly in formation with the Hawks of the Red Arrows.

The fastest production Concorde, G-BBDG became, in 1974, the first aircraft ever to carry 100 people at

twice the speed of sound 1,350mph.In October, 2003, British Airways offered G-BBDG to

the Museum for restoration and public display.Over an 18-month period, a team of over one

hundred volunteers restored Concorde to her former glory and she was officially opened to the public by Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent in July, 2006.

The Brooklands Concorde Team

Concorde Simulator Engineers

Angela has many years’ experience in tour operating, hospitality and event organisation.

In particular, as a Tour Manager, she often accompanied Concorde guests to numerous destinations and events worldwide.

Angela joined the Concorde team at Brooklands to reprise that role on our many Concorde special events, and corporate functions.

The Concorde Simulator Engineering Team are Chris Mitchell (left), Gordon Roxburgh (centre), Richard Walker (right), Vic Goddard, Neil Walker and Colin Stewart (not

pictured) . They work in conjunction with our Concorde Captains on the At The Controls of Concorde events.

Capt. Mike BannisterBritish Airways Chief Concorde Pilot

and Brooklands Museum Trustee

Mike was British Airways Chief Concorde Pilot from 1995 to 2003 and is the host on our Concorde Champagne Days throughout the year. He is also a member of our team of Concorde Captains on the Concorde Simulator. Mike’s full biography can be read on page 7. To read about our simulator events, go to page 21.

Gordon RoxburghConcorde Project Leader

and Concorde Simulator Engineer

It is probably true to say that without Gordon there would be no Brooklands Concorde!

He and his dedicated volunteer team were responsible for the restoration of Concorde G-BBDG along with the re-commissioning of the Concorde Simulator.

The latter was a remarkable and monumental achievement given the parlous state of the Simulator when it arrived at the Museum.

Gordon continues to supervise the regular maintenance and upgrading of the Brooklands Concorde ‘collection’ and is one of our Concorde Simulator Engineering Team on the At The Controls of Concorde events.

All this when his ‘proper’ job is as a Technical Director in the TV studios of Sky Sports!

Jenny TyeConcorde Operations Manager

Emma HayterAsst. Concorde Operations Manager

Emma joined the Concorde Operations team in the Summer of 2016. She works full time in the events booking office, and coordinates the events prior to the day. Emma also hosts some of our events. Her background is in high-class hotel reservations and also in the attractions industry, where she coordinated corporate and private functions for various groups.

Angela WhiteConcorde Operations Administrator

Jenny’s passion for aviation started at the age of 11. She flew solo in a Motor Glider at the age of sixteen, before getting a Driving Licence!

She gained her Private Pilots Licence in 2009, funded by an Air League Scholar-ship, and a year later gained her Degree in Aerospace Engineering.

During her studies, Jenny volunteered at Brooklands Museum as a member of the Concorde Project, predominantly helping to rebuild the Concorde Simulator.

Since then, Jenny has worked in the Private Jet industry arranging flight logistics and organising bespoke luxury packages including hotel reservations yacht charters, sporting events and fashion shows.

Concorde is very close to Jenny’s heart, as her father flew as a Senior First Officer on the British Airways fleet. She joined the Brook-lands Concorde team in July, 2015.

Mike Bannister joined BOAC (Brit-ish Airways’ predecessor) in 1969 as a pilot and flight navigator on the Vickers VC10 fleet. He became the youngest pilot on the Concorde fleet in 1977 and was appointed as a Con-corde pilot instructor in 1986.

He was promoted to the role of Chief Concorde Pilot in 1995 and, until the aircraft’s re-tirement, flew regularly as Captain on all of the aircraft’s routes world-wide,

From July 2000 Mike was very actively in-volved in the efforts to achieve Concorde’s safe return to service in November 2001. He liaised closely with manufacturers, aviation authorities and Government and represented British Airways in a range of arenas.

Mike was seconded to the Air Accident Investigation Branch as Lead Technical Delegate during the Concorde Accident Investigation.

Following this, Mike delivered significant Concorde presentations at Heathrow and in New York for the top 50 Concorde customers.

CAPTAIN MIKE BANNISTERBritish Airways Chief Concorde Pilot and Brooklands Museum Trustee

He was at the controls of British Airways’ Supersonic Flagship when Concorde returned to service on November 7, 2001 and for the final scheduled flight from New York to London on October 24, 2003.

Mike commanded the flight for Prime Minister Tony Blair’s State Visit to Denver for the G7 Summit

meeting in 1997, and has worked with NASA and Boeing on the next generation supersonic aircraft.

A particular highlight of Mike’s Concorde career was being in command of British Airways’ Concorde G-BOAD as, to the cheers of more than a million

spectators, she and the RAF’s Red Arrows spearheaded the flypast at 1500 feet above The Mall and Buck-ingham Palace to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Celebra-tions on June 4th 2002.

Mike is a trustee of Brooklands Museum and a champion of the dreams, visions and pride that made Concorde such an icon of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Imagine yourself at the controls of the world’s most famous passenger aircraft!

Our team of Concorde Captains are all former British Airways Concorde Flight Crew

and have totalled over 150 years flying and instructing on the BA fleet.

They are waiting to give you first hand experience of what it was like to fly Concorde ....

on the same Simulator on which they themselves trained!

There is only one operational Concorde Simulator in the world .... and it’s here at Brooklands Museum!

AT THE CONTROLS OF CONCORDE

Fly the Concorde Simulator

21

THE BRITISH AIRWAYS CONCORDE SIMULATORThe Concorde Simulator was commissioned in 1975 as one of just two in the world, at a cost of about £3 million - over £20 million at today’s prices. One of the most sophisticated aircraft simulators ever created, it was installed at the British Aircraft Corporation at Filton near Bristol and, for 28 years, was

used to train all British Airways Concorde aircrew. When Concorde operations ceased at the end of 2003, BA decommissioned the simulator and, a year later,it was dismantled and transported to Brooklands Museum. As a result of a three-year project, initially funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences

Research Council (EPSRC), led by a team of volunteers from the Museum and the University of Surrey, along with the expert assistance of XPI Simulation, this unique piece of aviation technology is being flown again as a

fixed-base unit - the only operational Concorde Simulator in the world.

SILVER FLIGHTSYou, along with three other ‘trainee’ Concorde

pilots, will be welcomed by your Concorde Captain in the Members’ Bar of the Brooklands

Clubhouse. There will be a presentation on Brooklands, its heritage and Concorde, followed

by a briefing from your Captain, before enjoying the Concorde Experience on

board our Concorde G-BBDG.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the Flight Deck with your Captain. Once on board the Concorde Simulator, the Captain will take

you through pre-flight checks and explain the controls. Now it’s over to you! You might be

flying from Heathrow over the City of London, or from New York JFK over Manhattan. Your

Marriage Ceremonies on board

Concorde

Walk down the aisle in Concorde style!

These days marriages may take place in a host of interesting and diverse ven-ues. Here at Brooklands Museum we believe we have one of the most excit-ing - the British icon that is Concorde!

In addition to the ceremony on board, we can offer a host of options for your catering - Champagne & canapés underneath the elegant wings of Concorde, a wedding breakfast or reception in one of the historic rooms in the Museum - the Blue Bird Room, Napier Room, Members’ Bar, or a mar-quee in the grounds of the Museum, such as in the shadow of Concorde!

The groom, best man and the guests are seated on board beautiful Concorde awaiting the arrival of the bride. With her chosen piece of music playing, she enters from

the rear cabin and walks down the aisle with her entourage to join her future husband and the Registrar for the ceremony. The couple exchange vows, say “I do,” sign the register

and, for the photo album, reprise the signing on Concorde’s Flight Deck!

Our Executive Chef has created a choice of exquisite menus for you to choose the perfect combination of dishes for your special day and a carefully selected wine list will complement your menu choices perfectly. We can even organise the wedding cake for you!

Then with its fabulous collection of historic motor racing vehicles and vintage aircraft in addition to Con-corde, there are many amazing back-drops for wedding photographs which will ensure that you capture the essence of the venue for your day.

Having established close relation-ships with a number of local suppliers, we are excellently placed to assist you with arranging all aspects of your special day including floral displays, photography, entertainment, printing, table linen and decorations, vintage car hire and much more.

We can even arrange for Concorde herself to be suitably ‘dressed’ for the occasion - inside and out!

For prices and availability, please see the website, or contact the Con-corde Operations team.
