Global Business Camp

Give your business the edge!

About the CampThe three day camp is designed to provide Australasia’s business owners with the strategies, tools and techniques to jump start and grow their business, taking it to the next level.

The content is centred around The 6 Secrets™:• Beginning with the end in mind• Planning for success• Growing the business• Managing the business• Valuing the business• Freedom

Networking is a key element to the Camp – allowing delegates and sponsors to interact in a relaxed, fast paced, fun and entertaining way.

Following the success of previous Global Business Camps, which bought together between 170 - 200 owners and operators of business with turnovers from start-up to $60 million from around Queensland, we invite you to play a part as a sponsor or exhibitor at the first CondonTreasure Global Business Camp. Your sponsorship of this educational and informative event puts you centre stage and in front of decision makers and key business owners who will become vital contacts in future dealings.

Based on previous attendance, delegates typically:• own and operate their business• have successfully grown their business from its inception• have an annual turnover of between $100k and $60 million • employ between 5 and 100 staff• have a thirst for knowledge, and a strong commitment for personal growth and learning• are looking to take their business to the next level, and• wishing to access goods and services to take their business to the next level• most importantly, every delegate is a decision maker , with a demonstrated passion for personal growth and self

improvement.

As a sponsor or exhibitor you will be provided with an invaluable opportunity to showcase your products and services to a highly qualified captive audience. Coupled with your attendance at the Camp and networking at social functions, your investment will be truly rewarding.

TESTIMONIAL - Sponsor

“Global Business Camps (GBC) is an excellent forum in which to profile our business. We are a proactive company and look to be involved with other businesses with a similar mindset.

The GBC team are attentive to sponsor’s needs, and ensure that potential clients are personally introduced to us during the program.

There are also ample opportunities to meet with the delegates and there is a relaxed, yet proactive, atmosphere amongst the group, that is conducive to doing business.

We have been long term supporters of GBC and intend to continue the relationship.”

Give your business the edge!

Owen attended a Global Business Camps event in Marc h 2010 and shares his experience.

Owen freely admits that he did not want to go to th e camp initially; “It was only that Mark (Treasure) rang me up, put the pressure on me, and told me that I needed to be there, I now know why he said that.”

There were many reasons why Owen felt he could not attend; “At that stage, I thought the timing couldn’t have been worse, Roma had just flooded and the phone was running a bit hot, I felt like I should have been back home.” And then there was the financial impost; “Financially, I didn’t think I could afford to go. The truth being that I couldn’t afford not to go.”

At first, as with a lot of first time attendees, Ow en felt a little bit uncomfortable; “I went in there the first day and felt a bit out of place. Didn’t know if I felt worthy, but after a while, I let go of that and got into the swing of things. I listened to a few people’s stories and discovered there were a lot of ordinary people there for the same reason I was…Trying to take it (my business) from somewhere I really just worked, to a business, somewhere worthy of the effort, maybe even a bit of extra effort.”

Owen went on to talk about his learning experience; “What was good about it (the camp) was probably the work groups, sitting at the table with people you knew, sort of felt comfortable, they weren’t always people you knew but in my case there was a few, as well as some people I didn’t’. So you felt pretty comfortable to discuss your business issues amongst each other around the table and you got to see what other people were going through as well. It felt good to know I wasn’t the only one. Yes, and it seems pretty common, some peoples issues were bigger than others, probably mine, but I enjoyed the group work a lot. It’s funny, I didn’t know if I would like that kind of thing…at first you sit there with a sort of closed look and don’t really want to let people know your position, ‘cause we were struggling.”

Owen took many things away from the three day event which have changed the way he looks at his busines s; “…for me it was somewhere I worked and it needed to be obviously different to that, it deserved a lot more respect then that. I also learned how to value my business.”

The key take away that Owen had though was to bette r understand which staff worked in his business and which didn’t, only one out of many possible lessons in th e three days that has returned many fold his invest ment in the camp;“…one of the biggest things that hit home for us was the bus, the people on your bus, that was just so important that my ears did prick at the time. I have to be careful because some of the people I’m talking about I’m still friends with - there were some people I thought were the ‘right’ people, but they probably weren’t. They have since gone on to other things, bigger and better things for themselves and we have replaced them with other people that are actually probably more suitable for our business and were we want to go. So, we have some new people on our bus and it’s helped us achieve what we’ve achieved last year and more this year.”

This case study is taken from extracts of a discuss ion with Owen Williams of O & G Joinery in Roma.

Give your business the edge!

John and Jan attended a Global Business Camps event in March 2010 and shares their experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 days at GBC on the Gold Coast 2010. We went along hoping to find ways to give our business an edge for future growth and we were not disappointed. Lessons about goal setting, values and vision, customer service, staff culture, marketing, systems and procedures and pricing were all valuable and have guided us throughout 2010. It was particularly beneficial sharing the experience and discussions with Rob Thornthwaite, our accountant (CondonTreasure) who had encouraged our attendance.

On returning home we were energized and overflowing with ideas . We developed a new, outstanding website (visit www.redegas.com ) which offers the answers to all our customers’ questions (new or established) –who we are, what we stand for, what to expect in products and service, our point of difference, opportunities to connect, answers to frequently asked questions. We now average over 200 hits a month, yielding many new customers to grow our business, to achieve our goal of being the LPG distributor of choice on the Sunshine Coast.

We have taken opportunities to develop our organisa tional culture through staff training, communicatio n systems and reward and recognition. We reviewed our business systems to get our house in order and legislatively compliant. We have developed a partnership approach with our accounting, supplier, banking, insurance and media associates.

GBC not only confirmed that many of our ideas and practices were on the right track, it offered us new insights. Most importantly though, it reinvigorated our enthusiasm to take our busines s to a new level. We have no hesitation in recommending GBC as a great investment in the future your business.

Give your business the edge!

David attended the Global Business Camps event in 2 009 and 2010, and shares their experience.

We have been to 2 camps now, when Mark (Treasure) talked about the first one I guess I was a bit excited about going, but then started thinking ‘why should I go’ and ‘do I really need to go’…. However, after attending the camp (although at first a lot of it probably went over my head, but started to sink in after the first day or so) we went back to our business and had a look at a lot of things, and obviously started to make a lot of changes as we be gan to see the flaws in our company .

My wife and I attended the first camp with our two business partners. After returning, we sat back and started to look at the finer points of our business, identifying our core values and mission statement and actually having a look at what ‘we’ were all about. There were a lot of ideas we had already thought of, but we just hadn’t sat down and put them together and got them ‘out there’.

By the second camp we had taken over full ownership of the business and had grown quickly, with so much work on that we found ourselves just out in field doing the work – and soon realised we needed to create new management positions. We knew what we needed to do to run a good business, but didn’t know how to push all ‘that’ out to our employees. We decided to take the new managers to the second business camp, and I certainly saw the benefits in doing this. It provided our mangers with a lot of information on the aspects of actually run ning the business,…the dollars, customer relations and so on, instead of the field work they were used to.

Being in the resource industry, we certainly knew we needed to have a lot of systems. But when we went away to the Business Camp, we realised just how much more a business is worth when good systems are in place. It definitely gave me a whole new found respect for the systems, why you have to have them, how they make the company tick, and the benefits of staying on track. I used to hate systems! I was probably more the guy who would go and do it, minimizing systems as much as possible, because I didn’t want to create more work…….But once I came back from the first camp, I realised the importance of systems and that once you do have them in place and working they actually REDUCE your work load.

I actually came away from the camp’s thinking ‘we’re not doing too bad’. I found we already had the resources to do what we need to do…..the camp just reassured me about where we were and pulled us back onto the rails a little bit, making us think a bit more about how we were actually going to run the business and not so ‘fly-by-night’.

Since attending the camp, our revenue has definitely increased and we’ve been able to maintain our exposure in a pretty tough market place. We are only a small company, but the camps have definitely kept us very professional about what we do and kept us in the game against a lot of big players (some who even wanted to take us over). Initially, it was fairly easy to hold our own, because there weren’t a lot of players in the market, but we’ve since had a lot of big companies merge into A ustralia and a little 4-rig company against big 200-rig companies is pretty hard to maintain .

My advice to other business thinking about attending the camp would be, just relax and settle into it – don’t expect to take it all in. If you come away retaining only 20% of what you heard during the camp and actually do that 20%, then you’re better way better off than before you attended.

Malcolm attended the Global Business Camps event in 2010, and shares his experience.

If you want to find out what your business is about, getting in the nitty-gritty, the Business Camp is the ideal place to go get the ideas to do it . I found it very beneficial.

After the business camp, I was really trying to get my head around e-marketing (although I’m not sure we require the large amount of reporting that some e-marketing programs provide - because we aren’t big enough yet)…. we are slowly but surely putting our client contact lists together. It has been a long process just trying to get all our clients to give us their email addresses, so now we are also giving some incentives so they’ll be more willing. Once we have the list, we will be sending out our specials list on a monthly basis.

There were also a few changes we made to our website (www.ajsteel.com.au) which we thought we should do something about and is now up and running well.

The camp also highlighted to me the importance of s taff and staff incentives. Since attending we have had a good look at what we pay our people and put those people who have seniority into a bit better financial position. I particularly enjoyed the analogy about having the ‘Right people on the bus and then in the right seats’, and so far everyone that’s on ‘our bus’ wants to stay which is very important.

Since attending we have also increased our pricing percentage and we are currently reaping the rewards from that.

My advice for others thinking of attending would be, don’t try to take a thousand things away. Pick 5 or 6 things, take them away, try to establish them as you can and then go back and gather a few more. You can’t do everything, because there are thousands of ideas. As you talk and network with other peopleyou come away with some great ideas, but don’t ever try to implement them all. Rob and I both said that when we left.

I plan to attend again and this time, hopefully get my business partner to go too, because I think he needs to do it.

Sharon shares her experience with Global Business C amps and CondonTreasure

Just another reason we decided to stay with CondonTreasure….the extra services that have been added to their business solutions. We attended the Global Business Camp with them whic h was awesome. We have started to implement some of the strategies we learnt and have already seen a return on our investment.

Suggestions at the camp were to have a fully functional telephone system so we installed a new one and have a receptionist who answers the phone now. We have employed other staff as we now aim to work on our business and not in it. In addition, the camp highlighted the importance of delegating responsibilities to others, which we have also started doing and all these new strategies are working well.

After the camp, we decided to expand our business, we made an appointment to see CondonTreasure at their office and they helped us to understand how to manage our fina nces and also protect our assets.

I have used CondonTreasure’s services for the past 10 years and have found them to be highly professional, helpful and quick to respond to enquiries.

When we moved our business from Roma to Clermont in 2006, at the time I thought I would change accountancy organisations. However, CondonTreasure were so great to deal with, despite the 500 kilometre distance to their office, we decided to stay with them.

Our accountant, Tegan Duff, assists us with the majority of our accountancy work. If there’s something she needs to check on, she doesn’t pretend to know, she finds the answer, and then gets back to us as soon as possible. The service is excellent.

We are so impressed by the many services they offer that we are about to commence using their payroll compliance services in Rockhampton.

I would recommend them to anyone who is looking for an accountancy organisation that does more than just ‘crunch’ numbers. They can also show business owners how to manage their business successfully. I would not even consider changing from CondonTreasure to another firm. They know our history, are reliable, friendly and always provide solutions to our business challenges.

Don’t hesitate – the camp is such a great tool to he lp grow your business.

Give your business the edge!

I was actually pretty excited as soon as I heard about the camp because I really did think it was going to be a good thing for my business… plus it was a great opportunity to get away from wh ere l lived and worked.

Essentially, I want to get my business running smoothly so I can venture out and do my own thing, outside my actual building company. Before the business camp I was on site at least 3-4 hours each day actually working on the tools – which I didn’t want to be. So, the concept of ‘business systems’ really caught my attention …which I have since focused on over the past 12 months. One of the processes I have put in place includes a work program that I give to my employees. It spells out the construction work plan, where the employees fit into that plan and sets them goals and guidelines in order to achieve what I require – and that has actually worked. I give staff a weekly program as well that backs up what I had written from ‘wo-to-go’. The work plan is even given to my bookkeeper so she knows when progress claims are due – which means it is all documented and easy for her to follow. Everyone in my business is kept up-to-date about wh at is happening and when .

I have now gone from 3-4 hours on site to only abou t a half an hour each day, and everything still run s smoothly. It’s great, I don’t need to be there. I didn’t even need to increase staff, because everything is very much systemised now…everyone knows where everything fits in. I have lent on my guys a lot more, which I wasn’t before (I was just leaving it all up to me) – I now understand that it is a two way street –it’s not just all about me. It’s about the staff was well, if you look after me, I look after you. It comes in round-about’s. I now reward the guys and it’s already starting to come back me…. everything is starting to work!

Since attending the camp my revenue has increased 6 6% (or by $800,000) in the last 12 months, which I believe was definitely attributed to the Business Camp….. because I’m not on site, I am actually out there trying to get work and quoting a hell of a lot more than I ever did before. Now I’m off site and keeping the work flowing.

I have actually set long term and short term goals for myself and I’m hoping I can stick to those over the next 2-5 years. I’m even working through these goals with my bank manager (who Rob, my accountant, actually introduced me to). I am planning to do my own developments in the next 5 years, so that’s where I am heading my business and I am confident a fter attending the camp and working with my bank manager that I wi ll achieve this.

I have made other changes too, like to my website so it works more effectively.. and more marketing work over the past 12 months too, which has made a big difference.

I have taken a few things from the last camp which is why I want to go again – to refresh myself, so I can say ‘ok I did this last year and I probably need to do these things this year’ and pick something different….. I will definitely see something else that I didn’t see last year.

I found the camp to be excellent last year… a really good camp for me to go to. It really is the best thing you could do for your business – it opens your eyes to different things and you real ise that you don’t actually have to be in the busin ess…only as much as you NEED to be…then YOU CAN LET YOU R BUSINESS WORK FOR YOU!
