Possible NADCA Sponsored Projects:
• Impact toughness & thermal fatigue resistance of the new grades listed in #207-2006
Project 161: Thermal Fatigue Resistance of High Performance Die Steels
Project Description: The objective is to provide the Die Materials Specifications and Heat Treating Task Force with detailed thermal fatigue and Charpy V-notch behavior of the advanced die steels that are included in NADCA 207-2006. Whereas data was provided by the suppliers of the steels, more testing of these steels is needed to strengthen the Specification and promote implementation by the die casting industry.
• 8 thermal fatigue samples and 80 CVN samples will be machined from select steels (two TF and ten Charpy samples per steel type) and quenched according to the specification. The as-quenched and the tempered microstructures will be determined. The thermal fatigue resistance of the eight specimens and the Charpy V-notch impact strength will be evaluated.

L. Impact Toughness • A coupon approximately 2½” x 4½” x ½” thick shall be prepared from a sample preferably from the same Grade/block of Special Qual ity die steel of known “annealed capability” impact toughness such that the 2½” dimension represents the thickness direction, the 4½” dimension represents width direction, and the ½” dimension represents the length direction of the parent material.• The coupon shall be attached to each workpiece away from edges and corners such that a 2½” x 4½” face of the coupon is in intimate contact with the workpiece. If tack welds are used, the welds should be placed along the 4½” dimension.• The coupon shall accompany the workpiece through the preheating, austenitizing, quenching, and first temper of the hardening procedure. • Test coupon must be tempered to 44/46 HRC.NOTE: If a final hardness other than 44/46 HRC has been specified, the coupon may be removed from the die after the first temper and then separately tempered to 44/46 HRC.
