Instructional Plan Introduction Directions:
• Teacher will present the following information to class, using globe or map.
o Panama is a small nation in Central America, slightly smaller than South Carolina.
o It occupies the narrowest part of Central America and is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the North, the country of Columbia to the East, the Pacific Ocean to the South and the country of Costa Rica to the West.
o Panama used to be a land bridge between North and South America.
o The Panama Canal was built to link the two oceans. It took 10 years to build and opened in 1914. It made Panama a more important country. Before it was built, ships had to make the long voyage around the southern tip of South America.
o The canal is 51 miles. More than 12,000 ships pass through the canal each year.
o Panama has a tropical climate

o Panama has a tropical climate and is hot throughout the year (although somewhat cooler in the mountains).
o There are 2 seasons; the dry season spans from January through mid April, and the wet season lasts from mid April through December.
o Jungle and dense rainforests cover much of the country.
o The primary language in Panama is Spanish. Many of the residents are bilingual (speak 2 languages) and speak English.
o The capital city, Panama City, is a modern city. Make the Panama Flag Directions:
• Teacher describes the Panama flag and students draw it. • Fold a piece of paper in half, open it back up and fold in
half again the other way. You should have 4 equal sized rectangles.
• The top left rectangle is white with a blue star in the center. (The white stands for peace.)
• The top right rectangle is solid red. (Red stands for the political party of conservatives.)
• The bottom left rectangle is solid blue. (Blue stands for the political party of liberals.)
• The bottom right rectangle is white with a red star in the center. (The red star stands for authority and legality.)
Teacher Reads Story: • Ask students to raise their hand when they hear a
Spanish word. Spanish is the native language of Panama.

• Students draw 4 lines (or more) radiating from each circle and write a word on each line to describe that character.

‘ABC Order Tropical Fruits of Panama” Worksheet Directions:
• Organize words in alphabetical order. Making Batido (Tropical Milkshakes) Materials:
• Frozen tropical fruit • Milk • ½ cup sugar • Blender • Cups and napkins
Directions: • Fill blender 1/3 to ½ full with frozen tropical fruit. • Add milk to blender until almost full. • Add sugar to taste and serve to students.
