COMPANY & CONTEXT

About Coney

‘If you want to see the future of British theatre now, then Coney is one of the companies to watch…’

Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

Coney are BAFTA award-winning interactive theatre-makers. We create games, adventures and play where people can choose to take a meaningful part. Our work takes place anywhere that people gather: in schools, libraries, museums, social housing, the streets and online, with impact devised for contexts from education to criminal justice, and always follows the principles of adventure, curiosity and loveliness. Our work often uses pervasive digital technologies already at peoples fingertips – in order to reach them wherever they happen to be.

Since the beginning Coney’s work has been informed by playfulness and participation, with an ethos embodied by the ever-present if mysterious Rabbit.

Coney has reached over one million people since the company began.

“Coney are very clever, very creative, very in tune with the fundamentals of the human need.’Emma Rice

Coney is an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation and a registered charity led by JCEOs Becki Haines & Tassos Stevens. We became a National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) of Arts Council England in 2012, and continue as an NPO through 2018-22. We became a registered charity in 2014 with 7 Trustees and chaired by Benjamin Yeoh.

Coney HQ is the engine that delivers the Coney programme. HQ is run by Rowan Lyster Administrator, Becki Haines Executive Producer | Joint Chief Executive and Tassos Stevens Director | Joint Chief Executive, Zara Veerapen-Padayachy Admin Assistant, Tingchi Chuang Production Placement, with David Finnigan as Associate-in-Residence and Toby Peach as Playful Accomplice. All of our roles in Coney HQ are distinct from roles any of us may take in the making of projects. There may be opportunities to develop skills and interests around particular lines of practice and take roles on projects.

The people making projects in the Coney programme are drawn from a pool of makers, recruited from the wider Network, and especially our Associates, who can also represent Coney in between projects. There are currently 18 Associates: Afreena Islam, Astrid Breel, Ben Pacey, David Finnigan, Dominic Garfield, Emma Frankland, Fran Moulds, Gareth Damian Martin, Georgia Symons, Georgina Bednar, Kieran Lucas, Michelle McMahon, Morag Iles, Rhiannon Armstrong, Segen Yosef, Toby Peach, Tom Bowtell, and William Drew.

The wider Network of Coney is open to anyone interested to join, and we host open events for people to connect, play, and exchange. There are members of this Network all over the world. In this way, we support emerging and established artists from all disciplines, and creative ideas at a vital point in their development.

Work & profileConey is at the forefront of contemporary theatre, with a thriving expertise in interaction design, digital cleverness and public engagement.

We make play with people at the heart of it all, following the three key principles of adventure, curiosity and loveliness, as if it might change the world a little for the better. Sometimes this play looks like interactive or immersive theatre. Sometimes it might feel like an adventure, a good conversation, or an exchange of gifts between strangers. Coney uses common digital technology cleverly to play with audiences wherever they are in an experience. We create dynamic events that take place anywhere people gather: in theatres, schools, museums, on the streets and online.

A Coney experience starts when you first hear about it and only ends when you stop thinking about it.

Coney’s work includes Rabbit: NTT (National Theatre 2006), The Goldbug (with Punchdrunk and BAC 2008), A Small Town Anywhere (BAC 2009 & 2012), Adventure in Learning A Cat Escapes (2010 onwards), National Charity Award-winning The Astronautical Challenge (2011, with Unlimited Theatre), BAFTA award-winning Nightmare High (Channel 4 Education, 2011), REMOTE (Camden People’s Theatre 2016 & national tour 2017), Adventure 1 (City of London, 2015), The Green Gold Conspiracy (for Chester Zoo, 2015-16), What’s She Like (for Headlong’s People Places and Things by Duncan Macmillan, 2016), A Lovely Intervention (Wandsworth Probation Service 2016-18), Your Connection Is Not Private (Free Word and Camden People’s Theatre, 2017), The Shadow Of The Future (Imperial War Museum, 2017), A Game Of Legacy (for and with Bernie De Koven, 2017), The Droves (CoLab Factory 2018), Phoebe the Apprentice Ranger (National Trust 2018), A Brixton Adventure (Ovalhouse 2018), How We Save The World (NERC & Natural History Museum, 2018).
