Mount de Sales Academy: Too Many Emails?! Microsoft Teams & OneNote Can HelpA common complaint is the large volume of emails received daily, taking time away from teachers that could otherwise be used to benefit students. Microsoft OneNote and Teams can save teachers’ time on daily tasks and responsibilities, freeing up time for things such as planning lessons and providing meaningful feedback to students. This session will focus on the use of OneNote to share information and collaborate with other teachers or staff members as well as using Teams to simplify communication and collaborate. This presentation will include basic information about how to use OneNote and Microsoft Teams with examples of success. MEEC Member, All

SLAIT Consulting: How to Create a Modern Ransomware Strategy Government agencies and education institutions are under attack and ransomware is the weapon of choice. Phishing prevention and education have become top of mind across the globe. Security teams and organizations are constantly working to upgrade their systems and provide better protection to their networks. However, the ‘bad guys’ are also constantly developing new techniques. Developing new threats takes time and expense so those looking to get around network security measures often target the weakest link in the security chain, the user. Join SLAIT & Palo Alto Networks to learn how to build a solid prevention strategy so your organization doesn’t become the next Ransomware victim. MEEC Vendor, All

Towson University: Avoid Permanent Local Admin Rights on Desktops and Laptops In college and university environments, it is common to find that faculty and staff wish to be the administrator of their computers. Unfortunately, that is not the best strategy for the safety and management of the desktop and laptop fleet. Using a variety of scripts, web applications, SCCM, and native Active Directory functionality, Towson University’s Office of Technology Services removed permanent administrator rights on nearly all faculty and staff Windows computers. This presentation will explain how to remove permanent administrator rights, offer alternatives for installing software, and review the auditing and exception process to keep your Institutions protected. Goucher College: Fantastic Flows & How to Make ThemI have come up with a process that can help people from varying technical backgrounds understand and design various Flow automations that may help improve the workflow in their organizations. We will begin with processes that Flow helped automate, outline the process, and apply it in a couple examples that were implemented at Goucher College. One example automated the processing of resumes for student workers, renames them and saves them to a shared storage folder accessible by the panel, and then auto-creates an interview page in a shared OneNote book an hour before the scheduled interview with interview questions pre-populated into the page. Other examples include routine mobile reminders and a push-button trigger that notifies attendees of an upcoming calendar event. MEEC Member - 15 Min Fast Track, All

Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School: Making Google Classroom Work for ParentsMost parents of students in Google Classroom schools, particularly in Middle School, have complained that Google Classroom provides little or no access to assignments and due dates for parents. This complaint has been particularly widespread in private schools, where other LMS systems provide parents virtually unlimited access to classroom information, assignment descriptions, etc. Google’s solution was to create Parent/Guardian Access, a product that our parents found to be both unreliable and confusing. To answer this need, we have begun to rely on the Classroom Calendar for each class, making it available to parents so that they can see assignments, due dates and a reasonable amount of information (rather than the helicopter parent mother lode that many LMS products provide). We’ll share how we use the Google Classroom calendar in conjunction with PowerSchool’s Parent/Student portal and our website to give parents the right information (and the right amount) when and where they need it. MEEC Member - 15 Min Fast Track, K-12

Chesapeake College: Connect, Organize and Share with O365 With the start of the new Academic Year, our team wanted to find a resource to share, contribute, access and stay informed with others on the team using resources we currently license. Chesapeake, using the MEEC Microsoft Agreement, thought the O365 web resources would be a good solution for our needs. Over the summer (July – August 2018) the team explored Teams, OneNote, and SharePoint. This session will cover the results of this summer pilot including our successes, failures, and ultimate tool selection. MEEC Member, All

Coppin State University: Say “Yes!” To the Profess(or) Coppin State will demonstrate how to use Microsoft’s Azure Lab Services to run specialized desktops for certain classes in the cloud. For a minimal cost and effort, you can deploy persistent desktops in the cloud for classes that require software outside of your normal desktop image. MEEC Member, All

Core BTS: Navigating the Cybersecurity Threat Landscape in K-12 With ransomware attacks becoming more sophisticated year after year, the education sector is increasingly at risk. School districts handle an enormous amount of sensitive personally identifiable information which makes them a prime target for potential attacks. In addition, educational institutions are often challenged by budget limitations, understaffed IT departments, and high-rates of file sharing. This session will cover trending cybersecurity concerns in schools and discuss how your organization can mount a proactive defense. MEEC Vendor, K-12

D2L: Student Engagement in Online Learning: What Works and WhyHow would you characterize today’s college students? Empowered? Confident? Self-motivated? They want all of their classes to be easy, but expect that most will be hard. Most will not speak up unless called upon. Most want, need, require their instructors to tell them exactly what to do. Keeping students involved, motivated, and actively learning is challenging educators across the country, yet good advice on how to accomplish this is not always readily available. This session offers research-based tips, strategies, and techniques to motivate, connect with, and engage online learners. MEEC Vendor, Higher-Ed, Instructional designers

Daly: AV- The Elephant in the Room and on Your Network. Classrooms, Conference Rooms, and Digital Signage. The AV industry’s shift to immersive technologies and integrated experiences will impact your network, facility, and people. Gartner lists the immersive experience among its Top 10 Strategic Technology Trends for 2019. Are you ready for networked AV? MEEC Vendor, All

Data Networks: How Protected is Your School from Cyber Threats? Stop Advanced Threats Before the Damage is Done Education institutions face cyber threats due to the valuable information stored on school networks and the ability for threat actors to use network infrastructure to launch operations against other targets. Academic networks are difficult for administrators to effectively secure, given the network’s size and number of users, as well as the need for internal and external users to access and share information. Dwayne MacKenzie, Data Networks Solutions Architect and 25+ year veteran of the security wars, provides guidance for navigating the nuances of the academic environment to better protect your institution. The session covers: an overview of the current threat landscape, real-world

MEEC THANKS!Thank you to all of the volunteers who made the 2019 MEEC Conference a success. MEEC is always appreciative of our Members’ efforts to assist us with our mission of achieving value together for Maryland education.

MEEC knows your time is valuable. Thank you for spending your day with us!

MEEC Turns 20, 1999 - 2019In 1999, the University System of Maryland (USM) was offered an opportunity to purchase Microsoft products via an Enterprise Agreement at an excellent discount. The USM couldn’t reach the minimum level of commitment by itself. With inspired forethought by Don Langenberg, USM Chancellor (1990-2002), the Maryland Education Enterprise

Consortium (MEEC) was formed to extend this opportunity to any educational entity in Maryland.

Over the last 20 years, MEEC has expanded its portfolio of agreements and broadened its focus from IT hardware and software to also include IT services. MEEC now offers 16 agreements with over 100 vendors. MEEC membership includes over 200 member institutions including: all 24 Maryland K-12 public school systems, numerous private K-12 institutions, all the USM universities and colleges, every Maryland community college and many private and federal higher education institutions. MEEC represents over 1.25 million Maryland students and over 214,000 FTE (faculty and staff).

MEEC largely relies on the volunteer efforts of our member institutions to provide vital resources to support our mission. Together we have saved millions of dollars for education in Maryland.

Applied Technology Services: Hybrid Cloud - How Do I do it, and How Do I Do it Well? IT Professionals and Business Decision Makers have been educated about Hybrid Cloud for what seems like eons, however, the delivery of that message has been fuzzy at best, and without a clear picture as to how to accomplish such a feat. Organizations are constantly evaluating applications to determine their eligibility to convert into the digital transformation world, while still struggling with technical, administrative, or other business hurdles preventing them from realizing and accomplishing business agility and scalability near instantaneously. So, how can an organization very simply reap the benefits of a Hybrid Cloud architecture in today’s multi-cloud world? We will explore use cases and their recommended best practices on how to begin your migration to the Hybrid Cloud. MEEC Vendor, All

Baltimore City Public Schools, Accenture: #thecitythatcodes: Building the Workforce of the Future in Baltimore One Kid at a Time In 2017 there were ~20,000 unfilled jobs requiring computer science in Maryland and yet only 7 of the ~170 schools in Baltimore City offered any kind of computer science. To address this gap, Baltimore City Public Schools, Accenture, and local nonprofit, Code In The Schools, worked side-by-side to begin an effort to make Baltimore #thecitythatcodes. As a result of a yearlong collaboration, 10,000 city students in 50 schools were exposed to computer science through The Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week. Students were taught by ~360 volunteers representing 65 organizations across Baltimore (including many MEEC members). Through hands-on coding games, students were exposed to computer science which demystified coding. This first step creates access for students to consider computer science jobs and is part of a broader initiative to create a diverse, local pipeline of tech talent to become Baltimore’s workforce of the future. Come hear about what worked, why this is important, and what’s next as the team continues to build the workforce of the future one kid at a time. MEEC Member and Vendor, K-12, Higher-Ed
