GREETINGS OF

THE

CONSERVATORY

DIRECTOR

The idea of organizing this international conference on Music Therapy

in Higher Education was born with the objective to compare our

experience since 2003 in Conservatory of Pescara with what happens in

the schools of Music Therapy active at Conservatories and Universities

across Europe.

The Conference will provide an important opportunity to initiate a

reflection through a scientific comparison of didactic courses exist at

the community level and it will allow teachers and students of Music

Therapy to measure their experiences and expertise, with those given in

the other reality similar existing in Europe. I am sure that the effort

made by all members of our Institute for the realization of the project

will be rewarded by excellent results.

The traditional hospitality of our region of its people will help to make it

even more enjoyable and memorable the participation to the

conference. Special thanks go to Prof. Silvio Luigi Feliciani, staff, and

student volunteers without whom this Conference would not have been

possible. On behalf of myself I send greetings to all the speakers and

participants for an inspiring and uplifting Conference.

As the current WFMT President, I want to

thank the CLDA for organizing this dynamic

International Conference on “Training in

Music Therapy and Europe”. The

Conservatory of Pescara under the

leadership of Massimo Magri are working

hard to prepare an outstanding program that features important

presentations on academic courses, clinical placement opportunities,

legal issues and employment for music therapists. Concurrent paper

presentations are being accepted by both professionals and students

alongside submissions for the poster session.

It is timely that the Conservatory is preparing this conference as they

are the first educational institution in Italy to offer a degree program in

music therapy. What an outstanding opportunity for music therapists,

health care professionals, musicians, students, researchers and

educators to share their work with a focus on stimulating and

advancing the growth of music therapy in Italy and Europe. I look

forward to meeting you and am privileged to be the Honorary President

of this conference.

MESSAGE FROM THE

CONFERENCE

COORDINATOR

It is for me a great honor to be able to attract at this conservatory a large number of music therapists . The choice to organize the conference, and the choice of the theme mainly stems from the strategic role that the Conservatory of Pescara has played in recent years in Italy in the area of training in Music Therapy. Our Bachelor degree program is currently the only one in Italy, and has about 60 students, some with very successful international placements through Erasmus. All learners do placements at national rehabilitation centers and hospitals affiliated committed for more than two years in rehabilitation projects, with children and adults affected by any kind of disability. Other trails, in other Italian Conservatories of music are biennial specialization courses. There are no university degree programs in Music Therapy. Consequently, with good reason the Conservatory of Pescara Pescara is a prime candidate to play a proactive, interlocutory referential and privileged role, backed by governmental structures that will take care of the professional standards of Music Therapy in Italy. Although standardization will take a long time, we will fight to ensure that adequate standardization is provided, in line with the parameters of training in Music Therapy in European Higher Education Institutions. In order to respond fully to this objective in the Conservatory today we wish to promote a comparison between all the European academic realities. You will certainly have noticed that I want to give the students the possibility to express their opinions.

They are -the students- the real stars of our work as trainers. And their presence, along with their voice, is for us a great stimulus and a strong element of reflection. Welcome everyone, then, welcome to our colleagues, welcome to the authorities, and welcome to the students. For the Conservatory of Pescara this is the first time we have organised such a complex event as that of an international conference. But I am sure that we will be up to our task, we will be hospitable and appropriate, and we will provide a decisive contribution to the development of training in music therapy in Europe. OFFICIAL OPENING OF CONFERENCE – SPECIAL GUEST

Challenges of Music Therapy development in Europe. Conception of the sustainable development model

The Commission on Education and Training, World Federation of Music Therapy promotes dissemination of knowledge regarding contemporary guidelines for the standards of the education and training of music therapists around the world. As the European Commissioner, I focus on music therapy in Europe mostly on the achievements, problems and challenges of this discipline. One of the most important aims of the Commission is to encourage discussions regarding educational standards and to develop educational

resources for music therapy educators to further enhance education/training practices. All these issues are close to my heart, not only as a music therapist, but also as President of the Polish Music Therapists’ Association (PSMT), an organisation which tries to do its best to support the development of the discipline in Poland. It has been noticed that some countries have developed structures and built good relations with other professionals, others, particularly countries and regions where music therapy is not yet well established, are still struggling with various challenges: how to organize the process of music therapists’ training, develop the discipline, become a partner for national health care systems. Formulating answers is not easy and definitely must follow a process. The sustainable development model for music therapy will be described. The system was designed for countries which need support in the building of the

music therapy profession. It shows a process of training and building structures and describes all the important steps that must be taken to provide solid grounds for the development of this discipline. It takes into account such important aspects of development like training and practice, research and publications. The sustainable development model has been accepted by the PSMT and implemented in Poland. Last year the model was recognized at the World Music Therapy Congress in Austria. Our experience as music therapist at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wroclaw (Poland)

This presentation describes our experience as music therapist at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wroclaw (Poland). We begins by describing who we are and where we come from. After we describe our training program: the Bachelor degree and the Master degree. We talk about the content related to the compulsory disciplines that we attended, and we'll talk about those optionals disciplines too. Than we will describe the practical activities that we attended during the practical activity (the integration of the different applications

of music therapy in rehabilitation activities in schools, in the cardiology department of a hospital, a psychiatric hospital, centers for the blind and others). We'll tell you what we felt during these experiences. After we will discuss how we can organize activities of music therapy in various centers, and for what objectives. Finally we will present the Music Therapy Scientific students organization, we will describe the many events we organize through this organization (conferences, jam sessions, concerts and more) in order to present and teach music therapy in Wroclaw). We will close our presentation by describing what we can do with the program Erasmus to Karol Lipinski Academy of Music. We hope, for this presentation, it will be able to provide a useful contribution to the information that this conference try to achieve. Pescara Conservatory partnership - our training at Mayfield School in Torquay – UK (Italy)

Our training at the Mayfield School, a specialist school for Cognition and Learning disability. What we want to share is: our experience and how is important it is for a student to go abroad, put into practice the objectives of your country course, develop learning and skills testing; everything in another language and with people with different course of study. The importance, in our view, to draw from different experiences.

What this training helped us for: to create a progressive sense of belonging to a professional community, developing theoretical and practical skills useful in different contexts. From inspiration to action - impact of international experience on music therapist`s career (Poland)

Erasmus scholarship is not just a way to discover foreign Because in music therapy there are so many approaches and country, get new friends or additional value to one’s CV. ways of leading sessions, it seems to be crucial to know and feel the variety. International exchanges give a great opportunity not only to explore it in practice but also to understand and respect the differences. In the presentation I will tell how did I see the differences in the way of studying in Wrocław and Verona, pointing out the skills that I got there and use in everyday

professional life. I will also tell why after studying in Verona I made up my mind and became music therapist. Erasmus was really enriching experience- it provided me with knowledge, opening many doors. But what I personally found the most important – it opened my eyes to my imperfections as well as strengths. The MT Bachelor Degree program in the Pescara Conservatory of music (Italy)

The presentation is divided into 3 parts. In the first part, the speaker presents the Conservatoire of Music in Pescara, where he is head of the Music Therapy Department. In the first part the speaker also presents all the activities that take place during the music therapy program: the theoretical subjects and their contents, the practice of musical instruments, the training activities and where they take place; finally, he illustrates the music

therapy practical exercises and goals. In the second part, the activities aimed to give an international dimension to the program are presented: the job placement in foreign institutions, seminars about the different music therapy models approved by the World Federation of Music Therapy in Washington, the Masterclasses conducted by prestigious foreign music therapists, the Membership of the Conservatoire at the World Federation of Music Therapy, the presence of the Conservatoire in international conferences and meetings, the project –finally realized- to organize an international conference about the various Music Therapy Training programs in European Higher Education. The report presents a peculiar interrelationship of business practice with the training and certification. (S.C.) The School of Music Therapy of Madrid, MUSITANDO, was founded in 2001 offering a Music Therapy Training of 660 hours with a final research work. The Program takes 3 years shared on 3 different areas of studies; Music & Music Therapy, Psychology and Medicine. 100 hours of

supervised practice during the second year at hospitals, private and public mental health centers, handicap centers, Alzheimer residences, normal schools between others are included. The internship in the MT Bachelor Degree program in the Pescara Conservatory of music (Italy)

The presentation describes : the organization of the internship (clinical practice and supervision) and the phases of conduction step by step; the assignment a clinical case (1st annuality) or group (2nd annuality) to the trainee conductor; the assignment of a case or a group in the role of co-therapist; the phase of observation (from 1 to 4 times); making a music therapeutic project. Music Psychotherapy as an Official Psychotherapist Training in Finland

In 2013, Music Psychotherapist Training (96 ECTS credits) was officially accepted as its own independent orientation and a form of psychotherapy at the University of Oulu, The Faculty of Medicine in Finland according to the new psychotherapy statute (1120/2010 2a §) in Finnish law. Only those universities, which have a responsibility for the medical and psychological training are allowed to arrange psychotherapy training in Finland currently. Master of Philosophy in music therapy has been accepted as a ground university degree since 2012 when the first advanced psychodynamic music psychotherapy training in 2007–2011 at the University of Oulu was authorized leading to the

protected psychotherapist tittle by the Valvira (National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health). The 4-year psychodynamic music therapy training is an integrative psychotherapy training including the verbal psychodynamic psychotherapist and the music therapist trainings. The graduated students who have completed their studies successfully evaluated by the university receive the authorization to use psychotherapist tittle from the Valvira. Music psychotherapists can work as an independent psychotherapists and the rehabilitation service providers of the psychodynamic psychotherapy and music therapy for the Kela (Social Insurance Institute of Finland). MusicSpace Italy was established in 1999 in Italy to develop training, practice and research in the field of music therapy as part of the international charitable project The MusicSpace Trust, based in Bristol (UK). MusicSpace Italy has a national center in Bologna. From 1999 MusicSpace Italyy organized and delivered the first Italian Post-graduate Diploma in music therapy in collaboration with the University of Bologna and the University of Bristol (UK). Music therapy education in Latvia

The report will present a summary explanation of how it is organized training in music therapy in Lativa, where for 10 years it is recognized as a profession. The objective is to provide a useful contribution to the conference information (S.C.) In Latvia, music therapy is a comparatively new form of health care and rehabilitation, which has been established only ten years ago, but is already nationally approved specialty. The educational programmes of music therapy have been set up in two Universities.

Music therapy is taught in Liepaja`s University and Riga Stradins University (being one of 4 arts therapies specializations – others are: art, dance-movement and drama therapy). Both study programmes are Master’s level studies, that last for 5 and 6 semesters. Master’s programme has been developed in accordance with the Regulations of the Latvia`s Cabinet of Ministers. Recommendations for the preparation of art therapists proposed by employers and professional association of arts/music therapies have been taken into consideration during the development of programme. Both universities are active participants of EU-ERASMUS docent mobility programmes and from 2004 to 2014 have hosted such guest lecturers as R. Haus (D), Aleksiene, V. (LT), J.Erkkila, (FIN), H.Fausch-Pfister (CH), I. Gutāne-Siener (A).,P. Hoffmann, P. Having taken up the post of Programme Leader in 2013, the presenter will discuss the development of the programme at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland - the only Music Therapy programme in the country - and her reflections on the journey she has had with these developments to date. Presentation of the training program of the School of Psychotherapy and Integrated Music Therapy, Rome (Italy)

The School of Psychotherapy and Integrated Music Therapy – SPIM (officially recognized by Italian Ministry of Research and Education in 2003) offers a post – degree, four – year training for psychology and/or physician. The school program is based on the framework of second-generation cognitive science: it includes interdisciplinary contributions describing how human beings develop and function from a neurophysiologic and psychological perspective. The uniqueness of the proposed

program is that it is integrative in three ways: It integrates neurophysiological and psychological aspects of the person, tacit and explicit modes of consciousness, and nonverbal and verbal codes for meaning. For the above reasons, the program addresses the complexity of human beings by integrating theory and research based on second-generation cognitive science and by training students in different methods of psychotherapy, such as cognitive psychotherapy (Beck, 1976; Ellis, 1962; Guidano, 1987, 1991; Lazarus, 1991; Liotti, 2007) and music therapy, that is, Guided Imagery and Music (Bruscia, 2002). It is in this same vein that the integrated cognitive program refers to a psychology of health based on autonomy, freedom, development of human potentialities, and self-fulfillment, all of which involve the self-reflection needed to be continually aware of one's own characteristics and resources. The SPIM program addresses several issues: (l) It outlines how analogical and analytic modalities work together to process information; (2) It shows

Music Therapy in Italy and in Europe: recognition and professional perspectives

It will be presented the present state of the Recognition of Music Therapy in Italy and Europe and all the institutional developments related to the legislative level. It will be presented and discussed the Law 4/2013 in its strengths and critical issues: provisions relating to professions not organized which is currently the only State

Law that recognizes the Music Therapy in Italy as a professional. It will therefore presented the professional certification paths provided by Law involving UNI (Organization for Italian Standardization, recognized by the State) and the Italian Association of Professional Music therapists (AIM) process about to the association’s Register inside the Ministry Economic Development (MISE), after the advice of the Ministry of Health for all professions that take place in health care. It will therefore explain the structural characteristics of the Italian Association of Music Therapy Professionals (AIM) access policies. It will be also presented the work done over the years by the European Confederation of Professional Associations of Music Therapy (EMTC) and the events of Music Therapy Day held November 15, 2014 that involved simultaneously all member countries in promoting dissemination activities and promotion of qualified professionals of Music Therapy in every European countries.

The music improvisation in the active music therapy Music therapy improvisation we find many points in common with the proper music (instruments, forms, people ...), but there are other skills (transference - countertransference, personal sound analysis, phenomena fonosymbolic ...), equally important that connote the

epistemological premises and objectives. In the treaty is emphasized, both as regards the musical skills of basic rhythmic and harmonic (to explore the potential of aesthetic gratification), the other to those appropriate skills "meta-musical" (sound and sense, symbolization, energy aspects ...) fundamental to operate well in a group of active music therapy. Together with the musical aspects, will investigate the basic concepts of non-verbal language (empathy, mirror biological ...) and those more closely related to the Benenzon methodology (setting, ISO, ... GOS). Particular attention will be directed to use conventional and especially "non-conventional" guitar as a tool aggregator in the group and more properly "intermediary object" in the relationship.

Music Therapy in progress The Poster that we want to present, it shows the itinerary and the development of the Music therapy in Italy, from the 70’s till our days. What we want to highlight is just how Music therapy has become established and especially how it is developing now. It must consider that, unlike the other European countries, in Italy music therapy is more recent ; and just because it is a ‘’new ‘’ discipline , it creates a kind of scepticism today ,

especially in the healthcare community; and it is not considered so important. Therefore no one examines it, and even the governmental authorities don’t take any stand about this situation. The way of a right consideration of the music therapy is still so far; and many music therapists fight constantly in order to consider it like a real profession. Education and Training in Music Therapy In many European countries the training of the music therapist is not recognized as a tertiary level education. Based on the guidelines of the European Music Therapy Confederation, the purpose of this work is to provide an overview of training courses in Europe, differentiating public and private sector and focusing on what kind of school of music therapy such courses are located. Even in tertiary education, the

study of music therapy arouses confusion because it is included in many disciplines: from Arts and Music to Health and Psychological sectors. For these reasons, specific official statistics from Eurostat are unavailable: qualitative data are complemented by statistical indicators that enclose culture, employment and education at country level. Erasmus in Europe This poster will report the possible modalities of Erasmus in MT (Placement and SMS) proposed by the Conservatoire of Pescara, both for internal students , that is students enrolled in our graduate program, and for external students, who choose our institute as their Erasmus location. It will mention the major

entities affiliated with our conservatoire so far and will expose the functioning of the recent governmental regulations for which each student from an EU or non-EU country can propose their preference regarding the seat. We will indicate the best institutions of higher education present in Europe and the best courses of

Conspe and Music Therapy We have thought to produce a poster which represents the First level Academic Course of Music Therapy lasting three years performed at Conservatoire of Music "L. D'Annunzio" in Pescara that gives enabling to the profession of music therapist, the importance of the only recognized title by MIUR (Education, University and Research Ministry) in Italy and the moment when it is established as experimental course at the Conservatoire. We are going to develop already studied subjects, the importance they have inside the

course and we will give further information about the conduct of admission examination. We will give space to the practice that students have opportunity to do within the affiliated centers and about how experiences are supervised in the class. Masterclass, workshops and seminars that students of this course have chance to frequent will be also represented, specializing in some techniques they have not treated in previous studies. Everything will be given on paper with the utilization of graphical representations, images and captions. If it could be possible, we will try to bring testimonies of enrolled and undergraduates

students about their experiences, expectations and difficulties they have faced during the course. In the end, we will try to present life in the Conservatoire from students attending the course.
