WELCOME

Welcome to the 40th Annual Conference of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education which is held in 2016 in Szeged, Hungary. We are proud of hosting PME in Hungary the second time. Let the question in the title of the conference “How to solve it?” make us salute and remember to the Hungarian Pólya György’s (George Pólya’s) oeuvre.

This booklet provides information about the conference and how to participate in its scientific and social activities.

Helpers wearing a blue T-shirt with the conference logo provide you assistance if you need any help during the conference.

ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGER

Bettina Roesken-Winter, Administrative Manager of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, will be available during the conference. Her office is located in the Congress Centre, 1st floor, Manager’s Office (M) (see map on page 12). The office hours will be announced on the information board.

LUNCH BREAKS

The participants will have their lunch in the atrium of the TIK building. A variety of dishes will be provided including vegetarian, gluten free meals, Kosher, and Halal food. On Friday, August 5 the atrium will be closed for the preparations of the conference dinner, participants will receive Lunch Boxes on this day. Helpers wearing a blue T-shirt with the conference logo will assist you if you need help during lunch breaks.

COFFEE BREAKS

Coffee, tea, and beverages will be served at the Exhibition area (E) in the Congress Centre (building A - see the map on page 11) during coffee breaks which are indicated on the Time Table. If you require some cold beverage or more coffee outside the scheduled coffee breaks, the University Café will be open during the conference.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

EVENING MEALS

For Thursday and Saturday participants should make their own arrangements for dinner. In restaurants, gratuities are seldom included in the tab. It is common to give a tip of about 10% of the total bill before tax.

CONFERENCE BADGES

Participants and accompanying persons receive a name badge. Everyone is requested to wear this badge during the conference to have access to the booked conference activities.

INTERNET ACCESS

Wireless internet access is available at the conference sites.

At the Congress Centre, you can access Eduroam (www.eduroam.org) as well. If you have Eduroam account at your home institution, you could use this account during the conference. For the building of Faculty of Arts we will prove internet vouchers at the registration. You will find more detailed information about internet access on the information board, and you can also ask student helpers about the issue.

CHILD CARE

Child care is provided by professional child care workers during the conference for those who have selected this option on the registration form. The child care facility (C) is established at a separated area of the University Café (see map on page 11).

The Gift Shop of University of Szeged in the Congress Centre is open during the conference.

PARKING

We can provide limited number of parking spaces in the underground parking garage of the Congress Centre. You can gain access to the free parking spaces at the Information desk.

In case of emergency at the conference venue, please contact the nearest student helper wearing a blue T-shirt with the conference logo. There will be an assistant qualified for first aid at the conference venue during the conference.

LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Szeged is an easily walkable city and for public transport, there are buses, trolley buses and trams. The last patches usually go at midnight. To approach the conference venue, you can travel by tram #2 (Aradi vértanúk tere station), by tram #4 (Vitéz utca station) or by bus 21 (Petőfi Sándor sugárút station). The conference registration fee covers a one-week travel ticket valid for all branches of local public transportation in Szeged for participants and for accompanying persons as well. You may ask for the ticket at registration.

GENERAL INFORMATION

DRINKING WATER

It is safe to drink tap water. The tap water in Hungary is controlled and monitored for its safety to drink. What is more, Szeged is especially proud of the quality of its tap water. We advise you to bring your drinking bottles with you.

CURRENCY AND BANKING

The currency in Hungary is Forint (HUF). For daily exchange rates please check the official homepage of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (the Central Bank of Hungary): www.mnb.hu/en.

There are two ATMs at the conference venue in the Congress Centre and in the Faculty of Arts as well.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM

LANGUAGE

The official language of the conference is English.

EQUIPMENT

Every room is equipped with data projector, laptop with Windows 10, and internet access. We can also provide wireless presenter devices. For any technical issues you may contact helpers in blue T-shirts with the conference logo and the Information desk. As a presenter, you are kindly asked to attend at least 10 minutes before your session and test your presentation to provide us more time to avert any possible technical difficulties.

THE SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES

Plenary Lectures and Plenary Panel: There will be four plenary addresses from invited speakers, each lasting 60 minutes. Each plenary address will respond to the theme of the conference from a different perspective. The plenary panel will be held according to the Oxford-Style debate protocol on the topic of mathematical problem solving.

Research Reports (RR) are intended to present empirical or theoretical research results on a topic that relates to the major goals of PME. Reports should state what is new in the research, how the study builds on past research, and/or how it has developed new directions and pathways. 153 Research Reports will be presented on the conference. Each Research Report presentation will be allotted a total time of 40 minutes: 20 minutes for the oral presentation and 20 minutes for questions and comments.

Oral Communications (OC) are intended to present smaller studies and research that is best communicated by means of a shorter oral presentation instead of a full Research Report. They should present empirical or theoretical research studies on a topic that relates to the major goals of PME. The number of OC presentation is 171 in this year. In OC sessions, 10 minutes are allowed for each presentation which includes the time it takes for changing presenter, getting ready, etc. However, the remaining 30 minutes of discussion time can be organized in different ways.

Poster Presentations (PP) are intended for information/research that is best communicated in a visual form rather than an oral presentation. There is no formal oral presentation associated with Poster Presentations, although there is time allotted during which presenters will be available by their posters for discussion with conference participants. 60 minutes will be allocated to Poster Presentation sessions during the conference. Authors should be

available at their poster in this session for discussion with conference participants. 68 posters will be presented during the conference.

Research Forums (RF): The goal of a Research Forum is to create dialogue and discussion by offering PME members more elaborate presentations, reactions, and discussions on topics on which substantial research has been undertaken in the last 5-10 years and which continue to hold the active interest of a large subgroup of PME. A Research Forum is not supposed to be a collection of presentations but instead is meant to convey an overview of an area of research and its main current questions, thus highlighting contemporary debates and perspectives in the field. There are three Research Forum proposals accepted this year. Two 90-minute slots (Part 1 on Thursday from 14:00, Part 2 on Saturday from 14:00) will be devoted to each Research Forum.

Discussion Groups (DG): The objective of a Discussion Group is to provide attendees with the opportunity to discuss a specific research topic of shared interest. The idea for a Discussion Group may be the result of an Ad Hoc Meeting or an intensive discussion of a Research Report during the previous conference. Discussion Groups may begin with short synopses of research work, or a set of pressing questions. A Discussion Group is exploratory in nature, and is especially suitable for topics which are not appropriate for collaborative work in a Working Session because they are not yet elaborate enough or because a coherent research strategy has not been identified. A successful Discussion Group may result in an application for a Working Session one year later. There will be four Discussion Groups, two 90-minute sessions will be allocated to them (Part 1 on Friday from 14:00, Part 2 on Sunday from 11:25).

Working Sessions (WS): The aim of Working Sessions is that PME participants collaborate in joint activities on a research topic. For this research topic, there must be a clear research framework or research strategy and precise goals so that a coherent collaborative activity is ensured. Ideas for a Working Session can result from Discussion Group sessions of previous conferences where a topic was elaborated upon and a research framework or strategy was developed. Each Working Session should be complementary to the aims of PME and ensure maximum involvement of each participant. Two 90-minute sessions will be allocated to Working Sessions (Part 1 on Thursday from 14:00, Part 2 on Saturday from 14:00).

Seminars (SE): The goal of a Seminar is the professional development of PME participants, especially new researchers and/or first comers, in different topics related to scientific PME activities. This encompasses, for example, aspects like research methods, academic writing or reviewing. A Seminar is not intended to be only a presentation but should involve the participants actively. PME can give a certificate of attendance to participants of the Seminar. The proposals of accepted Seminars are included in the Conference Proceedings. Two 90-minute sessions will be allocated to Seminars (Part 1 on Friday from 14:00, Part 2 on Sunday from 11:25). This year the International Programme Committee approved two Seminar proposals.

Ad Hoc Meetings (AH): During the conference, PME provides time slots and rooms for meetings of ‘ad hoc’ groups. The idea is that researchers can meet and discuss research topics that spontaneously came up during discussions of previous presentations at the conference. The Ad Hoc Meetings are reserved only for discussions; presentations or a continuation of a Research Report or Oral Communication are not allowed. To organize an Ad Hoc Meeting, at least two persons should prepare an announcement with a short and precise description of the topic, the names of the organizers, and the preferred time slot, and deliver it to the PME Administrative Manager [email protected]. The Administrative Manager will then assign times and rooms. Since there are only a few time slots and rooms, proposals will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

National Presentation (NP): The country hosting the PME conference can include a National Presentation in the scientific program of the PME conference. This year the NP will be organized and chaired by Tibor Vidákovich. The goal of a National Presentation is to present to PME members of other countries the specific history, traditions and perspectives, as well as the most important results, of a national mathematics education community.

Newcomers Meeting: The aim of this program is to deliver new PME participants an insight into the work of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education. All newcomers are cordially invited to join this gathering during lunch break on Thursday.

Policy Meeting: The Policy Meeting gives space for an open discussion with the Members of the International Committee. All participants are encouraged to attend this meeting on Thursday afternoon.

Early Researchers’ Day (ERD): For the third time, PME is pleased to offer a special day (ERD) for early career researchers who are also attending the PME conference. The Early Researchers’ Day will directly precede the main PME conference and will consist of presentations, working groups and other kinds of sessions planned to be of value to those new to research in mathematics education. The aim of the ERD is to provide early career researchers with opportunities to develop their research skills in various fields, establish new contacts, build networks among themselves and with respect to future PME conferences, and meet and work with international experts in the field. The 2016 ERD will be held on the afternoon of August 2 and the morning of August 3, 2016 at the main building of the conference venue. The day is being organized by Zsolt Lavicza (LOC member) and Stefan Ufer (PME representative). Participants of the ERD receive the detailed program by e-mail.

CULTURAL AND SOCIAL PROGRAM

OPENING CEREMONY

The Opening Ceremony starts at 15:00 on Wednesday in the Congress Hall (A1). After welcoming the participants from all over the world, the PME president will open the conference. The scientific program of the opening session is accompanied by musical and dancing performances. Details about the cultural program will be found on the conference website, and also in a brochure in your conference bag.

RECEPTION

On Wednesday the opening reception will take place in the Congress Centre after the Opening Ceremony, the first plenary lecture, and the national presentation. You are kindly invited for a welcome drink; some finger food and beverages will be also served.

CONFERENCE DINNER

The Conference Dinner will take place at the Atrium of the Congress Centre on Friday from 18:30. Enjoy the meals with some tasty Hungarian wine, dance to live music and revel in conversations with scholars from all around the world. Please bring your conference dinner ticket with you.
