In
fo
Bri sh Columbia has an es mated popula on of 4,254,500.
BC’s rugged coastline stretches for more than 27,000 kilometres (17,000 miles), and includes deep, mountainous ords and about six thousand islands, most of which are uninhabited.
The Coast Mountains and the Inside Passage's many inlets provide some of BC’s most renowned and spectacular scenery, which forms the backdrop and context for a growing outdoor adventure and ecotourism industry. Seventy‐five percent of the province is mountainous (more than 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) above sea level); 60% is forested; and only about 5% is arable.
B.C. has 1,030 provincial parks and protected areas, a rac ng about 20 million visitors every year.
Today, 14.7% (or more than 13.9 million hectares) of Bri sh Columbia is protected – more than any other province in Canada.
BC is Canada's third‐largest generator of hydro‐electricity, providing some of the lowest power costs in North America.
The province is Canada's second‐largest natural gas producer, and the oil and gas industry con nues to see tremendous growth in the northeast.
Tourism contributed $13.4 billion to the provincial economy in 2011, up 39% since 2001.
Bri sh Columbia is the third largest produc on centre in North America. Dozens of movies and televisions are produced year‐long in many areas of BC.
Much of the province is wild or semi‐wild, so that popula ons of many mammalian species that have become rare in much of the United States s ll flourish in Bri sh Columbia.
B.C. is a haven for bird watchers. It is es mated that over one million birds use the Pacific Flyway. Two of the many species that use this corridor are the rufous hummingbirds and the Snow geese.
Sea life is abundant in B.C. coastal waters. Pacific gray whales migrate along the west coast, and orcas (killer whales) live in the east coast water of Vancouver Island. Occasionally minke whales are seen, and recently humpback whales have been spo ed. Harbour seals are common. There are Stellar and California sea lion colonies.

Inukshuk, pronounced in‐ook‐shook, are stone monuments erected in the image of humans. One of their purposes was to communicate direc on in the harsh and desolate Arc‐
c. As such they were a tool for survival, and symbolic of the unselfish acts of a nomadic people ‐ the Inuit ‐ who built them as signposts to make the way easier and safer for those who followed. For thousands of years, these land markers or "sign posts" were important for Inuit survival in a constantly‐changing landscape covered in ice and snow.
Although most inuksuit appear singly, some mes they are arranged in sequences spanning great distances or are grouped to mark a specific place. These sculptural forms are among the oldest and most important objects placed by humans upon the vast Arc c landscape and have become a familiar symbol of the Inuit and of their homeland. Inuit tradi on forbids the destruc on of inuksuit. An inukshuk (also known as inuksuk) is o en venerated as symbolizing an ancestor who knew how to survive on the land in the tradi onal way.

The BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund is working toward building a dedicated facility to meet the accommoda on needs of children, adults and families needing to travel to Vancouver under emergency circumstances for medical treatment due to burn and major trauma injuries. For the 27% of pa ents and families in the
Burn Plas cs and Trauma Programs who come from outside the Lower Mainland and require accommoda on, the Centre will remove a significant roadblock to recovery. The centre will also establish a new and permanent home for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund charity and will play an important role beyond suppor ng pa ents and families with accommoda on needs. The centre will create a hub of ac vity and most importantly strengthen our connec on to survivors – giving be er access to programs and services and the opportunity to develop stronger, personal rela onships.
