LoriRosenkopf

Lori Rosenkopf serves as the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Undergraduate Division. She is the Simon and Midge Palley Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her B.S. and M.S. in Operations Research from Cornell University and Stanford University respectively. Lori also worked as a systems engineer for Eastman Kodak and AT&T Bell Laboratories before earning her Ph.D. in Management of Organizations from Columbia University. Since joining the faculty in 1993, Lori has taught courses for undergraduates, MBAs, doctoral students, and executive education participants, receiving the Hauck Award for distinguished teaching in the undergraduate program. She has served as a Senior Editor for the journal Organization Science and as a consultant for the National Academy of Sciences, and she has been elected as the Chair of the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management and also a member of the Macro-Organizational Behavior Society.

Lori’s research examines technological communities and social networks across several high-tech industries. She analyzes how and when knowledge may flow between technical professionals and between firms, mapping these flows in order to estimate which people, firms, and technologies are more likely to succeed. This research has been published in leading journals including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Management Science, Organization Science, and Strategic Management Journal.

Abstract:

Presenter:

Appreciative Advising, developed by Jennifer L. Bloom, is a 6-step process for advising students that uses positive, open-ended questions to encourage advisees to reach their full potential. From the way you set up your office to the student plans you encourage, Appreciative Advising provides a framework for helping students achieve their goals. This presentation will introduce the basic concepts of Appreciative Advising, allowing participants to discuss ways they may incorporate the techniques.

Abstract:

Presenter:

This session will focus on parsing the notion of ‘success or failure’ along with creation of actionable ideas. Our interactions with students create valuable opportunities that significantly impact students’ work and life at Penn. Often, students, simultaneously voice concerns of success and failure; celebration and unease. Using three groups of considerations, the presentation will help us deconstruct underlying issues, and further, enable us to guide students towards constructive orientations:

•Cultural Sensitivities Attached to Success and Failure

•The Relative Scale of Success and Failure

•Debunking the Myth of ‘Imposter Syndrome’

•The Particularities of STEM majors & subjects

Not all international students seek professional posi-tions in the U.S., but many do. As we serve this grow-ing population and share ideas and resources with our professional colleagues, we also need to engage the international students themselves. We provide many resources for these students at Career Services, and today we report on some of the creative ways we have involved these students in the conversation. Hear the students’ voices.

Abstract:

Presenter:

As the number of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Asperger’s Syndrome/Disorder increases, the presence of students on the spectrum also grows on our nation’s college campuses. From the perspective of a residential/student affairs professional, as well as a grandparent raising a college-age ASD student, this program will utilize research findings and personal experience to discuss this ever-growing phenomenon and how we, as residential/student affairs professionals can address the needs of this particular student population, while also alleviating the concerns of caregivers.

Abstract:

Presenters:

Depression and depressed mood affects a large number of students at Penn. Student Health Service (SHS) has implemented universal depression screenings for students visiting the health center. Once a student has been identified with a mental health concern, SHS works collaboratively with CAPS and other University offices to aid students in accessing resources. CAPS continues its long tradition of providing individualized counseling and psychiatric treatment to help struggling students deal with their depressive symptoms.

Abstract:

Intersectionality is a name for conflicts and experiences shaped by the complicated interactions where race, class, gender, sexuality, ability, ethnicity, family of origin or other forms of difference overlap and intersect, both in everyday life for individuals and for institutions. This SALT presentation will define intersectionality and ask participants to consider how our multidimensional identities impact our experience on campus in our interactions with colleagues, students and the broader Penn structure. Participants will engage in an interactive exercise and brainstorm ways that thinking about intersectionality could help improve their own sphere of influence on campus.

The Penn Compact 2020 includes as one of its three goals “increasing access.” Increasing access in part means reaching out to, serving, and graduating first-generation students. In this talk, we describe a pilot project—the Mayor’s Scholars Program—that aims to better understand the unique challenges faced by first-generation students here at Penn. Data is drawn from student surveys, focus groups, and one-year of implementation of the Mayor’s Scholars Program.
