1. Introduction This document contains instructions to configure a Switch (Edge switch). The switch type can be HP ProCurve 2512, HP ProCurve 2524, HP ProCurve 2510 and HP ProCurve 2610. This kind of configuration is not needed for each switch because the switch configuration can be transferred. See section 4 Transferring switch configurations. The switch port settings can be different depending on the device that is connected to the port. See section 3.9 Switch port settings. Every switch that is included in the system must have the same program version. For example, when the system is extended, the program versions of the switches must be verified and updated, if necessary.

2. Transceiver card installation Normally, the Transceiver cards required are installed on the switch ports during manufacturing. In the HP ProCurve 2512, HP ProCurve 2524 switch the transceivers are installed on ports 13 and 14, where as in HP ProCurve 2510, HP Procurve 2610 transceivers are installed on ports 25 and 26. However, if you want to install Transceiver cards on a switch, they must be installed before starting the actual configuration.

1. Remove the cover plate from the port. 2. Slide the transceiver firmly into the slot completely. 3. The transceiver will snap into the slot, and the transceiver’s faceplate should touch the

face of the switch. 4. Tighten the retaining screws on the transceiver until they are secure, but be careful that

you do not over tighten them.

NOTE:

The HP2512 and HP2524 switches use the Transceiver card (SC-Connector), where as HP 2610/ 2510 switch uses Optical Interface connector (LC-Connector) called as ProCurve Gigabit-SX-LC mini-GBIC (J4858B). In addition, there are other mini-GBIC modules available. Therefore, if the HP2610 can be used as replacement for HP2510, HP2512 or HP2524, the optical cable must be changed.

3. Terminal connection and Switch Configuration On a Windows 7 workstation or on a Windows Server 2008 you will not be able to see HyperTerminal. This is due to the reason that Microsoft does not offer HyperTerminal as freeware. Contact local Microsoft for procuring and enabling HyperTerminal for Windows 7 or Windows 2008 Server. Refer section 3.1.2 Alternative approach for configuring the HP Procurve switch .

3.1. Connecting the switch to the PC 1. Connect the HP ProCurve switch to the com1 port (selectable) of the PC. 2. Use the RS-232 serial cable that is delivered with the switch.

For HP Pro Curve 2510/2610 Switch, we can use “DB9 to RJ 45 Console Cable”

3.9. Switch port settings By default the switch ports function is in Auto mode, which means that the switch automatically selects the data transfer operation. However, Auto mode cannot be used in Integrated QCS / PMD Systems, Common QCS / PMD Systems, Integrated QCS/EPKS Systems and Common QCS/EPKS Systems.

NOTE: In these systems, it is not allowed to use crossover cable in the host to switch connection, because there is no auto negotiation function.

Refer Figure 30 for the typical Network topology with QCS system.

Figure 30 Recommended network topology with QCS System

The “FTE LAN” and the “Measurement and Control LAN” (Non-FTE) have different guidelines with respect network switch port settings. The ports for both must be configured as follows:

3.9.1. FTE LAN All FTE supported devices must be connected to the FTE-A and FTE-B local area networks. All devices and their corresponding network switch port setting must be configured as 100 MBit and Full Duplex.

Page 28: CONFIGURATION GUIDE, HP NETWORK SWITCHbalibago.org/Files/RAE/RAE Install Support Docs/MN887500.pdfthe HP ProCurve 2512, HP ProCurve 2524 switch the transceivers are installed on ports

3.9.2. Measurement and Control LAN All Non-FTE QCS devices such as scanners and actuators must be installed on a separate Measurement & Control LAN. Ensure that the network switch port setting (Speed, Duplex etc.) matches the setting of its corresponding measurement/control device. A matching configuration means that both the network switch port and its corresponding device are identically configured. For example, both to Auto Negotiate, both to 10MBit Half Duplex, both to 100 MBit Full Duplex, and so on. All Experion MX devices (MSS and sensors processors) use auto-negotiation. Therefore, the settings for all switches and servers that connect the MSS to the server LAN must be set to auto-negotiate.

NOTE: It is important to avoid setting switches or server network cards on the Experion MX Measurement and Control LAN to 100Mb/ s Full Duplex, because this creates a conflict with auto-negotiation and results in network failure.

Refer the below table for “QCS Measurement and Control devices” and their network settings.

NOTE:

When the network switch port is set to Auto Negotiate, it correctly detects that the MSS is configured for 10MBit but does not detect the duplex mode. Due to this, the Ethernet standard requires the use of half duplex for the network switch port. This ensures the settings between the MSS and the network switch port match.

Refer to the instructions provided in the manuals QCS System Net Configuration.pdf (Part No 46027700).

NOTE: If you use I/ O web link connection for PMD controllers, I/ O Web Link connection must be configured to function in 10 Mbps full-duplex (FDx) connection.

MDI MODE SETTING 1. MDI-X mode is used for connecting Straight cable. 2. MDI Mode is used for Cross Cable.

For a new switch, default settings would be MDI mode and if the user needs to change it to MDI-X mode or vise versa then execute the below commands:

The switch firmware versions 5.34 and 5.50 cannot be used in the same port trunk group. When updating the switch firmware version from 5.34 or older to the version 5.50 or newer, first change the trunk protocol to LACP.

CLI In the CLI interface, use the following command to configure the trunk settings:

• 001DS001 (config)# trunk 1-2 trk1 lacp

3.12. Restoring the Factory-Default Configuration If it is necessary to restore the factory-default configuration, it can be done by following the instructions in this section. This process shortly interrupts the switch operation, clears any passwords, clears the console event log, resets the network counters to zero, performs a complete self-test, and reboots the switch into its factory default configuration including deleting an IP address. There are two methods for resetting to the factory-default configuration: a command line command or Clear/Reset button combination.

CLI

• Hp Procurve Switch 2610#: erase startup-config. • Deletes the startup-config file in flash so that the switch will reboot with its factory-

default configuration. • Clear/Reset button combination.

To execute the factory default reset, perform these steps: 1. Using pointed objects simultaneously press both the Reset and Clear buttons on the

front of the switch. 2. Continue to press the Clear button while releasing the Reset button. 3. When the Self Test LED begins to flash, release the Clear button.

The switch will then complete its self-test and begin operating with the configuration restored to the factory default settings.

4. Transferring switch configurations The purpose of this chapter is to clarify how the switch installation file is transferred between a switch (HP) and a computer. When a switch has been configured (in this example a department switch having a Transceiver card, and a directory for saving the files to be moved has been created), the file is loaded from the switch to a PC as illustrated in the following sections. When loading the file from the switch to the PC, you can use either HyperTerminal or Telnet connection.

NOTE:

User need to use HyperTerminal or Tera Term in order to transfer the installation files/ Software from PC to switch or vice versa.

Tera Term also provides similar User Interface as that of Hyper Terminal for this data transfer operation. A lso note Win Server 2008 and Win 7 does not have HyperTerminal so in that case free emulator like Tera Term can be used on Standby computer or Laptop PC. Refer section 3.1.2 for details on installation of Tera Term.

4.1. Loading the file from the switch to the PC via HyperTerminal connection 1. The computer and the switch are connected with RS-232 cable between the serial ports

of the computer and the switch. 2. Give the following command in the CLI mode in the HyperTerminal:

• Copy startup-config xmodem pc and press [Enter]. The message Press 'Enter' and start XMODEM on your host appears in the command line.

3. Press [Enter].

4.2. Loading the event and crash log files from the switch to the PC You can load the event log, crash data and crash log files by using either HyperTerminal or Telnet connection. Use the same command that is used when copying the startup-config file, just replace the word startup-config with:

• event-log for the event log file • crash-data for the switch crash data file • crash-log for the switch crash log file

Examples: • HyperTerminal: 001DS001# copy event-log xmodem pc • Telnet:001DS001# copy event-log tftp 10.1.1.34 001DS001 pc

4.3. Loading the file from the PC to the switch via HyperTerminal connection The HyperTerminal connection (RS-232 serial cable) must be used to load the file from the PC to the switch. The Telnet connection cannot be used to load the file from the PC to the switch, because the switch restarts after the loading, which causes and the Telnet connection to be interrupted. For HP Pro Curve 2510/2610 Switch, we can use “DB9 to RJ 45 Console Cable”

1. In the CLI mode enter the command Copy xmodem startup-config pc and press [Enter].

2. The command line will show a message Device may be rebooted; do you want to continue [y/n]? Press y, then the next message is displayed:

5.2. Using Solar Wind TFTP Server to download the Switch software on the Network

In the XMODEM method for upgrading the Firmware, the host computer is connected to a switch using serial cable, and then the Switch Firmware is upgraded. Following same steps, each switch need to be upgraded one by one. Also the XMODEM method of upgrading the firmware is time consuming. The other method of upgrading the Firmware is TFTP Server method, where TFTP Server application is running on the host machine which is connected to all the switches. The switch firmware can be upgraded by connecting to the TFTP server running in the host computer over the network. This section discusses about SolarWinds TFTP Server for upgrading the HP switch Firmware. SolarWinds TFTP Server software is a part of “Production DVD”, so the TFTP Server can be installed from the Production DVD or this can be downloaded and installed from the below given link: http://www.solarwinds.com/downloads/index.aspx.

CAUTION: Better to enable TFTP service only when switch Firmware need to be upgraded to avoid security vulnerability. Once firmware is upgraded successfully, stop the TFTP service in the host computer.
