OUR PROGRAMS Itinerant Support Staff All public school students who have severe impaired vision or hearing receive extra support from specialist teachers for the hearing and vision impaired. A small team of itinerant teachers, (including those who come to Parkes Public School) support students across the Lachlan area.

Mrs Ruth Short and Mrs Christie Collins teach students in our school. One child receives support from Mrs Keryn Finlayson a teacher of the vision impaired.

At the beginning of each year, class teachers and school learning support officers who have a child with hearing or vision impairment in their class, attend a training workshop on how to best meet the needs of students with those impairments.

Choir News Choir will begin on Wednesday. Mrs Leonard will meet students at the primary gate at 12.45pm. Looking forward to some wonderful singing in Term 2.

Mrs Leonard and Mrs Bland

Kid’s Ark East Timor Money is collected Mondays. This week we collected $10.00.

Opportunity Classes (OC) for 2016 Each year students going into Year 5 can apply to become part of an Opportunity Class. Opportunity classes cater for high achieving academically gifted students.

Opportunity classes help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at their appropriate level.

Applications for opportunity class placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Opportunity Class Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held on Wednesday, 22 July 2015.

The closest OC to Parkes is located in Dubbo. If you would like to have your child considered for a Year 5 opportunity class for 2016, parents can submit their application through the website, www.school.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement

If you would like more information on Opportunity Classes please speak to Tracey Newbigging. Applications close Friday, 15 May, 2015.

My thanks and appreciation to all the parents who supported their children in participating in the ANZAC Day activities. I felt very proud to march with our students! It was lovely to see a number of our students attend the Dawn Service.

My thanks to the prefects who ran last Friday’s ANZAC assembly. Many of them spoke in front of the assembly for the very first time and even though they were very nervous they ran a dignified service.

It was great to have our band perform the school song for the very first time. Our band is now going to play the school song at every assembly.

After experiencing the very humbling ANZAC activities I was thinking about gratitude so I thought I would pass on some information from ‘Word from Today’.

Gratitude is a thankful attitude. A thankful attitude is a choice you make regardless of the situation. You choose your attitude just like you choose the food you eat and the clothes you wear. There is plenty to be grateful for and there is plenty to complain about too. And that is the point exactly - we have a choice to be grateful or to complain! Robinson Crusoe spent 27 years shipwrecked on an island. Here is part of his journal entry (paraphrased). His lists are the gripe and gratitude lists. Gripe: I’m stuck on this island without hope. Gratitude: I wasn’t drowned like the rest of my ship ‘s company. Gripe: I have no clothes. Gratitude: It’s a hot climate, if I had clothes I wouldn’t wear them. Gripe: I’ve got no one to talk to. Gratitude: The ship is near enough to shore that I have lots of necessary things to supply myself as long as I live.

That’s powerful stuff!!

Our attitude is simply the decision we make about how we are going to approach life. It isn’t Disney World thinking to focus on the good things in life; it’s wisdom!

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Mrs Breaden

Cross Country Carnival It’s that time already! The Parkes Public School Cross Country Carnival is on Friday, 8 May.

There will be a practice this Friday, 1 May, where the students will be walked through the course.

All students in Years 3 to 6 are expected to attend the Cross Country Carnival, unless medically unable (a note will be required to be sent to their child’s teacher if this is the case). Students are encouraged to run, but can choose to walk, the course. Students in Year 2 who have turned 8 are invited to compete. The 8, 9 and 10 year olds complete a 2 km course, whilst 11, 12 and 13 year olds complete a 3 km course.

The carnival on Friday, 8 May will start at approximately 9.40am and should be finished by approximately 11.00am. As in previous years, it will be held at Spicer Oval. Please wear sport uniform and appropriate footwear. A hat and a drink will also be necessary. For those children who require them, please don’t forget your puffer and your EpiPen. Please ensure that they are kept in a safe place on your person (for example, a zippered pocket or a bum bag).

We hope to see lots of parents, grandparents and friends there supporting our students! I hope some of our students have been training in preparation! It should be a great morning!

Thank you, Ben Smith.

Please complete the form below if you would be available to help on the morning. Please ask your child to return this note to Mr Smith. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Key points to remember around schools ‐ Helmet and safety on wheels

Your child must wear a helmet when riding a bike in any public place - it’s the law!

Your child’s helmet must comply with the Australian and New Zealand Standards. It must be securely fitted and fastened on their head.

Check that your child wears a bicycle helmet whenever playing or riding on wheels—bikes, foot scooters, roller-skates, skateboards or rollerblades. The helmet should be firmly buckled so it fits without wobbling or slipping to the sides. It must protect the forehead.

Although children quickly learn to pedal, steer and brake, they are not ready to cycle near traffic or on the road.

Children under 12 and adult riders accompanying and supervising them may ride on the footpath, unless there are signs specifically prohibiting cycling.

When riding on the footpath, cyclists must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians. Children need to take special care at driveways where vehicles may be driving in or out. At intersections, children must dismount and wheel the bicycle across the road as a pedestrian, following the ‘STOP! LOOK! LISTEN! THINK!’ procedure.

Western Girls Soccer Trials We would like to wish Makeely VanDyk, Hannah Martyn, Chloe Drabsch, Katie Dunford, Sharna Ross, Gracie Jones and Alison Reeves all the very best as they attend the Western Selection Trials in Cowra on Wednesday.

PSSA Netball On Thursday, 23 April, the Parkes Public School Girls’ Netball Team travelled to Dubbo to play in the PSSA Knockout Carnival. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather and the team played a total of three games. Game one was against Forbes and they were the stronger team, winning 25-5. Game two was a well-matched game, with Parkes Public just scraping a 10-8 win against Dubbo South. Game three was another fast paced game, with Dunedoo the winners, 20-7. All girls displayed great sportsmanship and represented Parkes Public School well. Congratulations, on your efforts!

Thank you to all the parents for your support, Brooke Norman (for umpiring) and Christine Watson for coaching the team!

Our next competition will be NSW Schools’ Cup, which will be held on Wednesday, 6 May in Parkes. A note outlining details will be sent home soon. The girls will have their final training session on Thursday, 30 April from 3.30-4.45pm at the McGlynn courts. All the best to the team!

In 2009, she was awarded the AMEB Shield for having achieved the highest student results in the State of NSW in examinations held by the Australian Music Examination Board.

She enjoys devising practice strategies to help pianists overcome technical hurdles and firmly believe that all technical problems can be fixed with patience, desire, and expansion of one's 'technical toolkit'!
