When it came to the Simchas
Torah honors in my Yeshiva in
Israel, students would commit to a
certain amount of learning
throughout the year as their bids.
At times the auction was bid up to
the point where the commitment of
certain students seemed almost
impossible. Only a few months
later, some of those students
regretted their pledges as they
struggled to fulfill their obligation.
In Parshas Matos the Torah tells
us that if a person takes a vow
they must be certain not to violate
their pledge and to fulfill the
commitment which emanates from
their mouth. Rav Tzvi Hersh
MiVidislav zt”l questions the
language of the pasuk. It seems
redundant: if one fulfills his
commitment, he is not violating his
pledge. Why then would the Torah
express that the individual should
not violate the pledge?
Rav Tzvi Hersh answers that the
Torah is encouraging people to
fulfill their commitments with the
same exuberance they expressed
at the time they uttered the pledge
from their mouths. If we take too
much upon ourselves, we may
ultimately come to resent our
pledge in the first place. The
Torah is teaching us that when
we make a commitment, we
should make certain that we will
be able to fulfill it wholeheartedly
so that the experience remains a
positive one.
“The Rav in Thought and Deed” takes place in the Main Shul 5 minutes after the 9:15 AM minyan concludes. We use the Koren/Rabbi Soloveitchik edition siddur to gain insight into the specifics of our regular prayers based on the insights of Rabbi Soloveitchik. The session lasts approximately 5-7 minutes.

Update on the Beit Midrash renovation
Work has now begun on the Beit Midrash. Beginning Friday, July 21, we are moving the daily minyanim (including Sundays) down to the main shul for the remainder of the summer or until the work is completed. The custodians have set up tables outside the haichal to make it easier for men to put on tefillin. For those who daven in the second minyan during the week, this Monday (Rosh Chodesh Av) will start off in the Library upstairs at 7:15am, and then will move downstairs to the
main shul at 7:25am.
As previously indicated, Tisha B'Av davening will be upstairs in the Beit
Midrash as planned.
I apologize for any inconvenience or disturbance caused by the work being done. If you have any questions, please let me know. I can be reached via
email at [email protected].
