Many of you heard his presentation at AJ’s Annual Meeting last May and were blown away by his inspirational message!

Rabbi Babchuck is a community organizer by training, and as Director of Innovation at CLAL, his primary focus is building barrier-free communities that empower and inspire lived practice. He was recently named Providence Monthly’s “10 to Watch” of Providence, Rhode Island.

GET READY FOR PASSOVER The first Seder takes place this year on the evening of Friday, March 30th. The AJ website has complete instructions on getting your home ready for Passover. The guidelines may

be found at: www.adathjeshurun.com/passover.

SELL YOUR CHAMETZ “Chametz” refers to any food product made from wheat, barley, rye, oats or spelt, which has come in contact with water and has been allowed to ferment and rise. Since it is prohibited to possess

chametz on Passover, any chametz left un-disposed must be sold to a non-Jewish person. All such chametz, as well as all chametz utensils that were not thoroughly cleaned, should be stored away. The storage area should be locked or taped shut for the duration of the holiday. Since there are many legal intricacies involved in this sale, a rabbi acts as the agent both to sell the chametz to the non-Jewish person on the morning before Passover, and to buy it back the evening after Passover ends. The form below must be received by the AJ office by March 29, 2018. You may also complete this form online at: www.adathjeshurun.com/chametz.

Sitter service is available only by advance reservation on non-Shabbat days by contacting Barb Embry at 458-5359 or [email protected].

Delegation of Power to Sell Chametz

I the undersigned, fully empower and permit Rabbi Robert Slosberg to act in my place and stead, and on my behalf to sell all chametz possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly as defined by Jewish Law. Rabbi Robert B. Slosberg also has the full power and right to act as he deems fit and proper in accordance with all the details of the Bill of Sale used in the transaction to sell all my chametz, as provided herein. Please enter your personal information below. Use the address in which the chametz is located.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES by AJ President, Dr. Armand Rothschild The AJ Board is working hard to keep the congregation in great shape, so the synagogue can continue to perform its many invaluable functions. The Life and Legacy Committee has obtained approximately 25 commitments valued at over $600,000 to ensure the future of the congregation. These are legacy gifts paid out of the estate of the donor at the time of their death. We are grateful to receive legacy gifts such as the generous bequest we recently accepted from the estate of Arthur Lerman. What a great way to perpetuate our Jewish tradition. AJ’s financial reports continue to show that we are financially sound. We have a fair dues schedule. We have generous donors. We have a great preschool. We have an administrative staff and accounting practices that keep track of every penny donated and spent. Not all non-profits are run this well. The final phase of our window renovation project was approved at the January board meeting. This was a huge project and is the final piece of the renovation. It will make the building much more energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing. No more window air-conditioning units! As requested by our younger members, we continue to offer family-oriented programming to meet the needs of all generations of AJ members. If you miss seeing young people at the shul, participate in programs like our Brown Bag Blessings, Hamentaschen-Bake, or Special Shabbat services where the younger generations are at AJ in abundance. “The Weight of Ink” by Rachel Kadish – 2017

“…a game of cat and mouse that plays out across four centuries… Kadish’s characters are memorable, and we’re treated to a host of them: pious rabbis and ribald actors, socialites and troubled young men, Mossad agents and rule-worshipping archivists. From Shakespeare’s Dark

Lady to Spinoza’s philosophical heresies, Kadish leaves no stone unturned in this moving historical epic. It is chock-full of rich detail and literary intrigue.” - Kirkus Review

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES ………… Continued from Page 4 Over the past year, we have had several new members join AJ following their conversion to Judaism. You may have read Jai Husband’s story in a recent edition of The Messenger. Jai is one of many Jews by Choice who also have remarkable stories. Each time I hear one of these stories, it reminds me how fortunate we are to belong to this institution. Often, Rabbi Slosberg, Cantor Lipp, or this congregation served as the catalyst that brought these special people to Adath Jeshurun. Finally, some personal thoughts…. Over the last 35 years, I have had five life cycle events at the Adath Jeshurun: A bris for each of my sons, a bar mitzvah for each of my sons, and now 16 years later, a funeral for my mom. This was a reminder of why we maintain an AJ membership and support the synagogue in-between life cycle events. We do this to have clergy that guide us through the next life-cycle event; a building available for our next bris/baby naming, bar/bat mitzvah, wedding or funeral; and a cemetery where our loved ones can rest in peace. You’ll never know when you’ll need the synagogue. My dad, my sister, and I are fortunate to have had the full resources of this congregation to help us get through my mom’s recent passing. Thank you from all of us.

Friday Evening, March 2, 2018 5:45 p.m.~ Kabbalat Shabbat Remix ▪ 6:45 p.m.~ Dinner & Guest Speaker

Dinner reservation deadline: February 23rd at www.adathjeshurun.com/remix

Adath Jeshurun invites you to a lively service with guitar, followed by a catered kiddush supper and an important presentation on human rights and social justice. The discussion will explore the Israeli Supreme Court's role in defending human rights and reshaping Israel's Democratic and Jewish identity, including rights to equality, freedom of employment, freedom of speech, civil liberties for marriage and property ownership, amongst others.

Guest Speaker, Rotem Malach is both a licensed attorney and a high school teacher. He works as the central emissary in North America for the World Zionist Organization's Department of Diaspora Activities. He is also the author of “The Democratic Citizen”, a civics textbook used in Israeli schools.

ADATH JESHURUN: Open Doors Open Hearts Open Minds!

We thank the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence for helping to underwrite the cost of the dinner!
