Putting Faith in Solar PowerThe Hebrew translation of l’dor v’dor—from generation to generation—is a cornerstone in Jewish practice and faith. This belief, combined with the congregational mindset of empowering future generations to be stewards of the environment, led Congregation Beth Israel to convert to solar energy.

“We are the custodians of God’s Creation,” says Rabbi David Weis. “And it is our job to ensure that we protect it and pass it on to the generations to come, in at least as good a state as we have received it.”

Geoscape Solar worked with the congregation to design a powerful photovoltaic (PV) solar system for the roof of the temple that was up and running within a few short months. The 188 kW system provides enough clean energy to power the entire 40,000 square-foot facility year-round, including the synagogue, classrooms, social hall and youth facilities.

From the moment the SunPower system was switched on, Congregation Beth Israel enjoyed the benefits of producing their own clean, affordable electricity. The congregation no longer has to pay electricity bills, and the system is expected to pay for itself in just over six years. And because SunPower solar panels are backed by a 25-year Complete Confidence Panel Warranty, the panels are expected to produce clean energy well into the congregation’s next generation.

Choosing the Right PartnersAfter investigating different solar companies and product options, Congregation Beth Israel chose Geoscape Solar to design and install its system because of their efficient, cost-effective design and an attractive financing program. Congregation Beth Israel opted for a pre-paid Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) in order to take advantage of the 15-year New Jersey Solar Credits (SRECS), and maximize savings beyond what is offered by traditional PPAs.

“We are the custodians of God’s Creation, and it is our job to ensure that we protect it and pass it on to the generations to come, in at least as good a state as we have received it.”

Congregation Beth Israel also appreciated Geoscape Solar’s recommendation to install SunPower modules to achieve its energy production goals, since SunPower panels produce up to 45 percent more

energy in the same space over 25 years than conventional panels.1

“Geoscape Solar and SunPower were the perfect combination of partners to enable Congregation Beth Israel to achieve energy independence,” said Congregation Beth Israel Board President David Lowenstein. “We have great confidence that this partnership will help Beth Israel be a leader in environmental stewardship.”
