is a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause

NOTE:

As conjunctions, but and yet are often interchangeable.

BUT - contrast (however)– generalYET – very strong contrast

Use "yet" when you are  SURPRISED:

• He has lung cancer, yet he smokes 20 cigarettes a day!!!• I told him that there was a shark in the water, yet he stillwent swimming!!• She doesn't know a word of my language, yet she seems to understand everything I say!

Use “but” when you are stating a fact in contrast:• He’s poor, but he’s happy.• It’s nice, but it’s really expensive!
