Girl Scouts: Making the World a Better PlaceC l a s s o f 2 0 1 2 !Molly Doruska, Ankeny, IA, 9th Grade, Troop #50
(written by Molly)
My life has always been a busy one. There never really was or are any dull moments. Joining Girl Scouts in fi fth grade, after fi nding time, has created so many more amazing moments for me.
I have attended camp at Camp Tanglefoot and Camp Sacajawea. There, I have
learned so many skills. But more important than all the
things I have learned, is all the people I have met. I have made so many friends and met so many amazing role models at camp since I have entered the world of Girl Scouting. They have inspired me to go back to my community and infl uence it.
I have assisted those with brain injuries for my Bronze Award. Then I made over twenty lap blankets for the nursing home patients as my Silver Award. I asked for help in carrying my work on, and the Ankeny Girl Scouts made fi fty-six blankets for the local nursing homes to hand out while caroling. These have all been great moments that Girl Scouts have implanted in my life.
Recently, I was asked in my extended learning class to take on a project to challenge myself. I knew immediately I wanted to enter the Write Women Back into History Essay Contest. My topic would be Juliette Gordon Low as we entered into the 100th anniversary year. Little did I know that the theme was women’s education and women’s empowerment!
I did my research and learned so much about how Juliette Gordon Low battled not only the social norms of the time, but also hearing loss in order to found the Girl Scouts. My essay on her accomplishments and their impacts on my life won fi rst place in the 8th-9th grade division. It was my little way to add to the celebration of Girl Scouts 100th year celebration.

Girl Advisory Committee Are you a leader? Do you have creative ideas?
Do you like to represent others? Do you have a passion for Girl Scouts?
Mission: The Girl Advisory Committee is girl-led and dedicated to serving as the council’s voice for all Girl Scout Cadette, Senior and Ambassador age girls in our Greater Iowa jurisdiction. By being girl-led, the committee will enrich the lives of all girls through meetings, leadership projects, and living by the Girl Scout Law. By lending a voice to a movement that wants, needs, and values girl-led contributions, these young leaders will play a significant role in shaping the ongoing work of Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa.
Purpose: This select group of girls will work as an advisory group, partnering with staff members on projects ranging from program development to research and merchandising. By facilitating youth-adult partnerships, these leadership opportunities help these young women to influence decision-making processes in Girl Scouting.
Structure of Committee: • Members serving on this prestigious committee must be a registered as a Girl Scout Cadette, Senior or
Ambassador (in grades 9-12). • The Committee will consist of 25 girls, five representatives from each Leadership Center area (Council
Bluffs, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Mason City, Sioux City).
Committee Responsibilities: The committee will
• Serve as a voice for girls in Girl Scouts. • Communicate the girls’ voice regarding the Girl Scout experience in support of the Girl Scout mission. • To represent girls in their geographic area and assemble valuable feedback.
Values Statement:
• Discover o The Girl Advisory Committee will discover ways to gain practical life skills and use critical thinking to
connect with local Girl Scouts, in hopes of bettering their Girl Scout experience. • Connect
o The Girl Advisory Committee will feel connected to their communities, locally and globally, as well as using our team building skills to bring programs and leadership experiences to our local troops.
• Take Action o The Girl Advisory Committee will take action by being an advocate for themselves and others, locally
and globally. We will educate and inspire others to act
Time Commitment: • Committee appointment is a two year commitment; we will meet at least once a month. (Everyone’s voice
and input is crucial – we will use video or phone conferencing if time and location is an issue.) Girls in 12th grade can apply and serve a one year term.
• Beyond normal meeting times, you’ll be asked to help with projects and events.

It’s your Business - Run it!Over the next few months, Girl Scouts of the USA will introduce you to 20 very different women across the country who have one big thing in common—they had a dream of running their own company and they made it happen.
In our new video series, It’s Your Business—Run It!, they’ll tell you about what inspired them to start their business and what keeps them going. They’ll also share some of the skills they picked up along the way—whether that’s how to write a business plan, ask investors to invest in your idea, or how you can use Twitter and Facebook to reach new customers.

PRERNA GUPTA: Meet a mobile app developer who wants you to know that even if your fi rst business venture doesn’t succeed, the best thing you can do is pick yourself up and try again.
When Prerna Gupta started a social networking site a few years ago, things were looking good for a while. Then her company fell victim to a rough
economy. But she didn’t let that stop her. She moved on to the next idea and started Khush, a company that develops apps for smartphones and other mobile devices.
“Don’t be afraid of failure,” she says. “The most important thing when you go after your dreams is to go after them without fear. I failed and I was able to pick back up and use what I learned from that failure and turn it into success.”When Prerna Gupta started a social networking site a few years ago, things were looking good for a while. Galia’s company helps women learn to plan, save, and use money wisely, and advises women who run their own businesses. She says the most important words for anyone running a business are:

Take this simple pledge from the confi dencecoalition.org Today, I pledge to be confi dent.
I will love myself just the way I am. I don’t need to be anyone but ME!
I will accept others for who they are. I’ll tell my friends, family and others that they are perfect just as they are. I will not bully or talk bad about other people. I will treat others as I would want to be treated.
I will have the confi dence to stand up for myself and others. I will stay true to my beliefs and say “NO” to people who want me to act differently. I will encourage my friends to stand up for what they believe.
By joining with other girls, I will make the world a better place. I will encourage confi dence in myself, my friends, my family and others.
I will remember that I CAN DO ANYTHING!
Imagine a world where beauty is a source of confi dence... not anxiety.
