ABOUT THE COVER:Every baptism tells a story. It’s the story of a changed life. As a church, we find great joy in celebrating the stories of those who have made the decision to trust Jesus, following Him in all of life. If that’s not a decision you’ve made, we’re glad you’re here. We hope you’ll come to see who Jesus is and why He’s worth trusting. But just because you attended doesn’t mean you are sold yet.
Maybe sticking around and actually becoming a part of Christ
Community is still a big question for you. Maybe you are skeptical
of this whole church thing in general. Trust me, I get it.
I didn’t go to church growing up, so even after I became a
Christian, I was deeply skeptical of the church. I brought a lot
of baggage with me, and it took me awhile to work through it.
Obviously, now I’m a pastor, so I’m a pretty big fan. But I still
encounter so many folks who are open to faith and learning more
about Jesus, but really don’t want anything to do with church.
If you are nodding along, this article is for you. Here’s the thing:
I really, really don’t want you to give up. Not yet. Keep coming!
Why? Glad you asked! Here are a few things I’ve learned that

There’s nothing more relevant than church. One of
the major issues about church I needed to work through
was the assumption of “irrelevance.” For me, it went like
this: The church is a part of the past. I don’t need an
institution to tell me what to believe. And aren’t they just
a bunch of backwards-thinking weirdos anyway? What
I’ve found over the years is I couldn’t have been more
wrong. The church, when it’s done right, is one of the
most important, practical, and challenging spaces for
me personally every week. That isn’t to say that church
is always entertaining and fun. It isn’t. Sometimes we
talk about hard stuff. Things that need to change in
our society. Things that need to change about us. Sin.
Death. Pain and suffering. Loneliness. Hard things. But
relevant things. You may not always agree with what you
hear or what others around you believe, but church is a
place that is deeply committed to the truth. I can’t think
of a more relevant topic than that.
It’s okay to have doubts. I used to think that church
was only for you if you were sure you believed in Jesus
and the Bible and all that stuff. That’s not true. There are
many people in our churches who aren’t sure, and many
people who still have questions and doubts. We work
hard to make Christ Community a place where doubts
are not only allowed, they are welcomed. Even if you
aren’t sure what you think about Jesus or the Bible, you
are welcome here!
Christians aren’t all hypocrites. I hate that I have to
say this, but I do: the church has always and will always
struggle with hypocrisy. Even Christ Community. That’s
part of what it means to work with people: we aren’t
perfect and we often present ourselves as something
we really are not. The recent slate of pastors and
churches imploding due to moral failure is a sad but
relevant example. And wondering if the church is full of
hypocrites like that is a fair question. I’m here to tell you
the answer is No. There are amazing people who model
the love and grace of Jesus in our church. I know I’m
biased, but it’s true. I would hate for you to miss out
on some amazing Christian people because someone
somewhere made a mistake.
There is real community here. Now, I’m not saying
there is perfect community here. But it’s real and
available to you. My perception is that real friendships
and committed relationships are harder than ever to
come by. Once you leave the controlled environment of
high school or college, the workplace and the internet
are the biggest ways we try to connect with other
people. Those are fine, but they don’t hold a candle to
what is possible in the church. The church is one of the
few places left where people gather, not only to worship
and learn, but to get to know each other and support
one another in present and embodied community. Again,
it’s not perfect, but it’s real. And we’d love to have you.
Speaking of which....
The church needs you! Maybe you’ve never thought of
it this way, but church skeptics are great for the church.
It’s how we see things differently. It’s how we get better.
It’s how we grow and reach more people. Seriously!
I recently had coffee with someone who attends our
church but is not really sure what he thinks about it yet.
I left with ten ideas of how to love people like him even
better. I told him, “We need you!” I’ll tell you the same
thing, we need you!
Maybe you are still on the fence. That’s fine. But please
know that our doors are always open to you, and we
would love to have you in our church family. I hope we
will see you back on Sunday!

Jesus framed discipleship with two often-repeated
words, “follow me.” But what did Jesus have in mind?
What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? There is
much we could say to this crucial question, but let me
get to the heart of the matter. Discipleship to Jesus
is about a new life of intimacy, apprenticeship, and
sacrifice.
INTIMACY To follow Jesus
means we understand that the
Christian faith is not following
religious rules, but following a
person. In His atoning death
and glorious resurrection, Jesus
has reconciled us to Himself.
This means that by grace
through faith we are saved from God’s righteous wrath,
forgiven of our sin, and are secure in His redeeming love.
There is nothing we can do to earn our salvation or to
merit His grace. This is the good news of the gospel—
faith that opens the door to intimacy with Jesus. In John
15, Jesus invites His followers to “abide” in Him. To abide
in Jesus is to experience a growing intimacy with Jesus
where we increasingly know Him and are fully known by
Him. This is the “with God life” that the gospel makes
possible. By walking with Jesus in the power of the Holy
Spirit, the deepest longings of our heart find refreshment
and joy in the fellowship and manifest presence of the
resurrected and living Christ. Following Jesus is a life of
growing intimacy with Him.
APPRENTICESHIP Following Jesus is also a path of
whole life apprenticeship. In the great invitation, Jesus
invites all who follow Him to
enter His yoke and learn from
Him. In Matthew 11, we hear
Jesus’ inviting words: “Come
to me all who are weary and
heavy laden and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you
and learn from me for I am
gentle and humble of heart and
you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” When we
say “yes” to Jesus’ great invitation, we embark on
a life-long training regimen with Master Jesus. Yoked
with Him in the normal course of our daily lives, we
become more and more like Jesus as we grow in
Christian maturity.
In Jesus’ yoke we learn His precepts and practices. In
the power of the Holy Spirit, we embrace the spiritual
disciplines Jesus modeled for us. Day in and day out, in
every nook and cranny of our lives, we learn how to live

SINCE CHRIST COMMUNITY’S INCEPTION, WE HAVE HAD A MISSION STATEMENT OF BEING A CARING FAMILY OF MULTIPLYING DISCIPLES INFLUENCING OUR COMMUNITY

TO FOLLOW JESUS MEANS
WE GRASP THE CHRISTIAN

C O N N E C T SUMMER UPDATE 20196
our lives like Jesus would. As the incarnated sinless Son of
God, Jesus practiced spiritual disciplines such as solitude,
prayer, fasting, study, and service. Spiritual practices are
not meritorious, but they are transformational in our quest
to greater Christ-likeness and Christian maturity.
As Jesus’ apprentices, are we learning from brilliant Jesus
in our relationships? Are the loves of our hearts being
re-ordered? Do we love God and our neighbors rightly?
Are we learning from Jesus how to love our spouse? Our
children? Our parents? Our siblings? As we go to work
on Monday are we learning from Jesus how He would
love our coworkers and how He would want us to do
our work? Are we learning from Jesus how to play and
rest? Are we learning from brilliant Jesus how to embrace
the changing seasons of life as we experience the
transforming rhythms of grace? Following Jesus is a life of
apprenticeship that transforms all of life.
SACRIFICE When we say “yes” to following Jesus, we
experience a life of intimacy and apprenticeship, but we
also encounter a life of sacrifice. Jesus never hid His scars
to attract disciples. Jesus reminded His followers they
would need to take up their cross like He did. In Luke 9,
Jesus puts it this way: “If anyone would come after me,
let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow
me.” To follow Jesus is to embrace a cross life. In the first
century, the cross was a symbol of death. What does a
cross life mean for us? It may not mean martyrdom, but
it will mean self-denial, sacrifice, and suffering.
Those who say “yes” to Jesus will be asked to say “no” to
some things in life, even good things. The cross life may
involve giving up a relationship that is outside of God’s will.
It may mean putting aside a long-held dream. It may be
saying “no” to some strong desire or a comfortable life. It
may mean facing the ridicule and rejection of friends, family,
or peers because of our faith in Christ. We, or ones we love,
may face persecution for being followers of Jesus. Although
we must not minimize the fact that true discipleship will
often require the sacrifice of our human desires, we must
not forget Jesus promises an abundant life far better than
any alternative we might pursue on our own.
It is easy to have grown up in church or even now attend
church regularly, yet not be following Jesus. Have you
decided to follow Jesus? Are you experiencing a life of
intimacy, apprenticeship, and sacrifice? Wisdom beckons
us to follow. Although we need to count the cost of
following Jesus, we must also be aware of the higher cost
of non-discipleship.
Will you be Jesus’ disciple? As a local church we are
unwavering in our commitment to be a community of faith
focused on discipleship to Jesus. In truth and grace, with
Christ-like love, in the power of the Spirit, let’s follow Jesus
together.
Tom Nelson, Lead Senior Pastor, founded Christ Community 30 years ago. Because of his love for the local church and for building leaders, discipleship has always been at the center of Christ Community’s mission. Tom and his wife Liz have two grown children.

At the heart of the Christian faith is an invitation to follow
Jesus in all of life. To learn from Him. To be trained in
faithfulness and fruitfulness by living as He lived, and
loving as He loved.
This means that Christians, in many ways, are to be
people who learn by watching and doing. We witness
the habits and disciplines of those who’ve exhibited
Christ-like virtues, and we work to integrate their
knowledge and wisdom into our experience.
This kind of training takes place in the home, in
relationships, and in our workplaces.
One example of this immersive life-on-life learning at
Christ Community is our Pastoral Residency program.
Why Residency?
Many young pastors leave seminary lacking practical
training in day-to-day ministry. They’ve certainly learned
theological truths in the classroom, but often lack
experience in applying those truths to the varied lives
and callings of those in their congregation.
This is why Christ Community is committed to
developing and empowering pastors through our
Pastoral Residency.
The Pastoral Residency provides a wide-range of
potential ministry opportunities suited to each resident’s
gifts, abilities, and eventual ministry focus, with multiple
opportunities for mentorship available. Just as teaching
hospitals provide real-life experience for young, talented
doctors, a pastoral residency provides an irreplaceable

learning laboratory for seminary graduates to grow
in leadership, preaching, administration, and godly
character. Pastoral residents are mentored by senior
leaders and prepared for life-long success in pastoral
ministry.
Imagining Impact
Since launching our residency program in 2005, Christ
Community has trained and empowered 30 pastoral
residents. It’s our prayer that this investment in next
generation leaders will continue to deepen over time
and that God will continue to use our church to develop,
train, and prepare gifted pastors, who lead with integrity
of heart and skillful hands.

CHRIST COMMUNITY
THROUGH THE YEARS
1989First Sunday Morning ServiceOn Sunday, March 5, 1989, Christ Community celebrated its first Sunday service.
1998A Big Step of FaithAs Christ Community sought to save money for our first construction project, we received word from our sister church in Romania that $50,000 was needed to complete their building. We sent the money we’d saved to our sister church and were surprised by God when we received a single large gift of $500,000 that catapulted us forward in our mission.
1994Land Purchased in Southern Johnson CountyAfter searching for a place to plant a permanent home, our church purchased its first parcel of land in Johnson County. Who could have imagined then that Christ Community would one day exist as one church in five locations?
Since 1989, God has been writing the story of Christ Community. And what a beautiful story it is! Over the past three
decades, our story displays evidence of God’s goodness and proof of His generosity. Our church has been surprised by
directions God has led us and encouraged by the many ways He has blessed the work of our hands. We hope these
glimpses into our past allow you to see and celebrate God’s faithfulness to our church.

WHITE AWAKEDANIEL HILL
The picture of the church in the book of Revelation is one of vast and beautiful diversity. For God’s ideal to break into our present moment, a crucial step is for white folks to know what it means to be white.
Christians who are a part of majority white culture can (and should) engage in learning other cultures, but we (I’m speaking for myself now) can forget that we too have a culture that shapes the way we see the world. Until we do the hard work of knowing how whiteness has shaped our experience, we’ll never be as faithful to Scripture as we can be.
Daniel Hill, a thoughtful pastor in downtown Chicago, IL, will take you on a marvelous journey in his own self-discovery that is helpful for white and non-white Christians alike in better understanding each other. Gabe Coyle
D ISUNITY IN CHRIST CHRISTENA CLEVELAND
Long is the list of things that divide people in our day. And while I wish it could be said that the church is immune to such division, sadly she often finds herself with a greater propensity
for it. In her book Disunity in Christ, Christena Cleveland does a remarkable job in lovingly, yet boldly, helping followers of Jesus see the ways they are complicit in creating and perpetuating these divides. But she doesn’t simply point the proverbial finger at Christians. She also encourages and offers ways that the church can grow in unity for the purpose of displaying the union we have in Christ together as those redeemed and reconciled to Him and to one another. Cleveland beautifully asserts that unity is not simply a nice value to embrace, but it is central to our identity as followers of Christ and worshipers of the one true God. “People can meet God within their cultural context but in order to follow God, they must cross into other cultures because that’s what Jesus did in the incarnation and on the cross.” Reid Kapple
THE BRONZE BOW ELIZABETH GEORGE SPEARE
What would you do if the Romans crucified your father and killed your mother, leaving you an orphan? In her 1961 Caldecott Medal winning novel,
Elizabeth George Speare invites us into the life of a boy named Daniel who lives in the 1st century in Israel under Roman rule. Few books have inspired in me a deeper love of Jesus and the forgiveness He makes possible. Bill Gorman
LINCOLN IN THE BARDOGEORGE SAUNDERS
Fair warning: this book is not for everyone, and certainly not for children. But it is an honest, sometimes funny, mostly profound, creative tale about the ways we avoid, cope
with, and ultimately stare death in the face. Written like a play, set in Civil War era America with Abraham Lincoln’s family as a backdrop, I could not put this down. Andrew Jones
REMEMBER DEATHMATTHEW MCCULLOUGH
Nothing says “Happy New Year” like a book about death, but that is where I began my personal meditation in 2019. So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of
wisdom, the Psalmist says (Psalm 90:12). McCullough does just that, pointing out that life is not a savings account we save into, but an account we draw from each day, and one day will draw down to zero. In a culture where it is easy to forget our mortality, Remember Death confronts our mortality and shows how that confrontation opens up a rich life with God. Tim Spanburg

“Good morning, Nathan!”
He must have seen the shocked look on my face. I stuttered out a polite, “Good morning,” in response. It
was just my second week visiting, and already someone knew my name? He took the time to remember
me? I was 18, beginning my senior year in high school. I’d grown up in church and could rattle off loads
of Bible trivia. I knew all kinds of stuff about God and church, but all of a sudden I was known.

C O N N E C T SUMMER UPDATE 2019
18
18
When I first walked into Christ
Community, I was wrestling with
faith. My whole life I’d “believed”
because my parents believed. But
in the fall of 1997, I’d had a falling
out with my closest friends. I had
no idea what I was supposed
to do with my life. And I was
growing tired of pretending to be
a “good Christian kid” while living
duplicitously behind my parents’
back. In hindsight, I was also
beginning to experience the mild,
ongoing depression that’s never
really left me.
Yet a pastor remembered my
name. I was worth remembering.
Me. And my life would never be
the same.
At that time, Christ Community met
at Overland Trail Middle School in
Overland Park. I’d never been to a
church that met in a middle school
before, but that wasn’t the only
thing I found to be different about
this church.
I heard preaching and a love for
God’s Word that stretched my
mind, touched my heart, and
made a difference to my week.
I sang church music I actually
connected with. I saw a community
of people who genuinely loved
one another (even a teenager like
me) and engaged in a mission to
care well for our city and world.
I was hooked. Not just on Christ
Community, but on Jesus and His
Church.
That fall, I fell in love with Jesus.
I began reading the Scriptures, and
not because my parents told me
to. I actually tried to start living this
stuff out. I began leading a Bible
study with my peers at school. My
life was no longer my own and I
was better for it, even amidst my
ongoing struggles and sorrows.
I wanted to do the same for others,
so I applied to a Bible college
in Chicago and was gone just a
few months later. This time was
precious to me, and I eventually
felt compelled to pursue a pastoral
vocation. Bible college is also
where I met my wife Kelly. During
summers and on Christmas break,
I was always eager to worship and
serve with my church family back in
KC. By this time Christ Community
had moved into its first permanent
home, in Leawood.
I don’t know why, but even then
Pastor Tom (he’s been my pastor a
long time, people!) began to invest
in me. I remember him taking me
out to lunch to talk about life and
my desire to be a pastor. Tom
was practically my hero. He led an
amazing, healthy, growing church,
but he still made time to know and
encourage me.
Eventually, he mentioned that
Christ Community was thinking
about starting a Pastoral Residency
for seminary graduates to develop
pastors through more than just
the occasional lunch. Perhaps he
took one look at me and thought,
“There’s no way he’s ready! We’ve
got to do something!”
I hadn’t ever heard of a pastoral
residency, but the chance to
actually work for a short time at
Christ Community, to be mentored
by its leaders, and to receive tuition
help at seminary? It almost seemed
too good to be true. There was no
way I could pass that up!
I applied for the residency and was
accepted. (The standards were
much lower back then!) So off I
went to Trinity Evangelical Divinity
School. Kelly and I had recently
been married, and found ourselves
incredibly blessed by our church.
It was 2005 when I joined the staff
as our first pastoral resident. A
month later, our second resident,
Jeanette Thomas, joined too. Fresh
out of seminary, I was filled with
so much learning (and idealism),
but clueless how to be a pastor.
Yet here I was, given the gift of
mentorship. I had the opportunity
to take my first steps in my calling
in a safe setting, before being sent
off to serve God’s church some
place else.
Can you believe that in the 14
years since our residency began,
our church has helped train and
equip 30 pastoral residents? These
men and women are now serving

Christ and His Church all over the
country and world. Think about
that impact!
Yes, seminary is an essential part
of pastoral training, and I wouldn’t
trade those years for anything.
But here is where I learned to be
a pastor—a healthy pastor—and
because of our commitment to
the Residency, we’ve been able to
do that for so many. Just imagine
for a moment the many churches
and the countless lives we’ve been
able to impact because of our
commitment to multiplying leaders.
Even back in 2005, I knew this
was a church I wanted to be part
of for the long haul. I also knew
I was a resident and needed to
start looking for a real job. I applied
many places and got a lot of
rejection letters that year.
Yet, in early 2006, I was put on a
team to explore “multisite church
planting.” Since the very beginning,
Christ Community has had a heart
for our whole city. And we’ve
always believed church planting is
the most effective way to reach lost
people and impact communities.
And don’t forget, church planting
is how Christ Community began in
the first place. We’ve always been
committed to multiplying churches,
but what about multisite?
“It’s a dumb idea,” I originally
told my mentor at the time. But
after much research, our multisite
exploration team concluded that
yes, a multisite strategy would
be an effective way to fulfill our
mission. We recommended to
the Elders that if we were to
move in this direction, we’d most
likely prefer to plant in Olathe. (At
the time, we had lots of people
driving from Olathe to Leawood for
church.) But our team believed it’d
take us at least two years to get
ready for our multisite transition,
which meant I’d be long gone by
the time that campus opened.
But God had other plans.
It was only two months later that
we held our first church service
at the Olathe Campus. We
weren’t ready, but God was, and
He booted us forward with an
unbelievable gift. A little church—
Heritage Community in northwest
Olathe—was closing its doors.
They had 10,000 square feet on
10.5 acres. Would we want to
take over?
In the fall of 2006, the Olathe
Campus opened and God
changed my life once again. We
began with just a few remaining
folks from Heritage Community
Church, and were quickly joined
After 10 years as the Olathe

Congregational Development.
While continuing to serve in Olathe,
he also works closely with the

C O N N E C T SUMMER UPDATE 201920
WORK MATTERSTOM NELSON
Work. For some this word represents
drudgery and the mundane. For others
work is an idol to be served. In either
case, a biblical understanding of
work as godly activity and a means of
spiritual formation is lost.
Striking a balance between theological
depth and practical counsel, Work
Matters engages the theological basis
of God’s plan for everyday work.
Tom Nelson explains how the fall has
impacted vocation, how God’s redemption touches every sphere of our lives
including our work, and how what we do now is connected to what we will do
forever. As Nelson connects Sunday worship to Monday morning, he gives
readers practical tools for understanding their own gifts, so that they may
better live in accord with God’s design for work.
THE ECONOMICS OF NEIGHBORLY LOVETOM NELSON
What does the good news of Jesus
mean for economics? Too often,
Christian teaching and ministry have
focused only on the gospel’s spiritual
significance and ignored its physical,
real-world ramifications. But loving
our neighbor well has direct economic
implications, and in our diverse and
stratified society we need to grapple
with them now more than ever. In
The Economics of Neighborly Love
pastor Tom Nelson sets out to address this problem. Marrying biblical study,
economic theory, and practical advice, he presents a vision for church ministry
that works toward the flourishing of the local community, beginning with its
poorest and most marginalized members. Nelson resists oversimplification and
pushes us toward more complex and nuanced understandings of wealth and
poverty. If we confess the gospel of Jesus, he insists, we must contend anew
with its implications for the well-being of our local communities. Together we
can grow in both compassion and capacity.
by about 120 people from the Leawood
Campus. People came because they loved
their church and longed to see their church
in their community, for their neighbors.
So they left behind their comfort and left
what was familiar to launch something
new. Because of them and their bold faith,
imagine how many more people are now
a part of God’s family! Imagine how many
more people are now part of the Christ
Community family! It’s staggering.
The step toward multisite didn’t just leave a
lasting legacy in Olathe. It changed things
for all of us, across our city, as we’re now
one church in five locations.
The rest, as they say, is history. 2006
wasn’t just the year the Olathe Campus
was born. In many ways, it was when
our Downtown (2010), Brookside (2011),
and Shawnee (2015) Campuses began
as well. We’d become a multisite church,
reorganizing our entire identity, giving
ourselves away for the sake of our city,
committing to doing this work together.
It’s been almost 22 years since I first
walked through these doors—more than
half my life! And a lot has changed for
Christ Community and for me personally,
but our mission remains the same: To
be a caring family of multiplying disciples
influencing our community and world for
Jesus Christ. That grabbed me at 18 and
it still motivates me now.
What is perhaps most amazing, however,
is to watch what God has done through
ordinary people. Ordinary pastors and
ordinary congregation members. God used
an ordinary man to remember my name,
and it changed my life. He used ordinary
people to impact you and uses ordinary
you to impact others. Yet with His church,
He does extraordinary things. What a joy
to be along for the ride!
To God alone be glory.

C O N N E C T SUMMER UPDATE 201940
God created everything good, and we made a mess of things. But there is hope for a good world again.
This hope is not in what we can achieve, but in what God has promised to accomplish Himself. For no matter what comes, God has promised the earth shall be blessed.
Join us this summer as we continue in Genesis to see the resilient love of God for His world.
For us.
For you.
S U M M E R S E R M O N S E R I E S Amidst the difficulties of a broken world and through broken people,
God will fulfill His promise to bless the earth
I will bless
those who bless you,
and him who dishonors
you I will curse, and in you
all the families
of the earth
shall be blessed.
genesis 12:3
Community Groups are places where people grow. And the growth occurs in every dimension of life. Time after time, we’ve seen group participants grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors, both local and global.
If you are exploring our church, Community Groups are an excellent next step.
