  • Hi everyone. Its December, the month of the year when all reason goes out the window... Car boots are full of pre-Christmas shopping, trollies are back to back in supermarkets, meeting up with old friends for Christmas cheer, its a lovely time of year. So we have included a selection of different tips and ideas to make that shopping list a bit easier.

We also catch up with the lovely Maria Walsh this years Rose of Tralee who is coming home for Christmas, she tells us about her year so far and what a year it has been.

We also meet with Brian Hurley, the Kerryman who has recently been appointed Regional manager for Irish TV.

Lots of fashion and style and the usual things and we also have Dr Leahy to tell us how to spot the sick child in the house.

We have given some of our usual contributors a break this month so they can get some Christmas shopping done but they will be back in the next issue full of new tips for 2015.

So get that shopping finished, shop local and keep our county moving. Remember Christmas is not for everyone so spare a thought for those around you that may be alone or not getting the Christmas spirit as you are. Visit your elder relatives and take some time out to sit and chat its doesnt have to be all about the biggest present under the tree Time is precious so share it with loved ones.

From everyone here at Connect we want to wish you and yours a happy and peaceful Christmas and every good wish for the New Year.

    Until next month

Maria Walsh Rose of Tralee 2014

Christmas is almost upon us, and our fantastic Rose Maria Walsh comes home to celebrate the season in Kerry, we catch up on what has been a busy few months for her and we see how things have changed since that night back in August where she was

    Crowned Rose of Tralee

Can you tell us how the past few months have been? Has it been life changing?

It is hard to believe it has been three months since PHILADELPHIA was shouted out by the Kerryman - Mr Dith S. People have asked me since How has it been? and to be honest, I cant really find one word impactful enough to share how extraordinary it has been. It has indeed been busy. I have traveled and met many many people. And in all of these journeys I have been able to share how great the Rose of Tralee Festival is. The platforms of me doing this have been quite grand to say the least. I have travelled to Kolkata, India with the Hope Foundation. I have been quizzed on the Late Late Show by Ryan Tubridy on RT. I have walked the many stalls at the Ploughing Championshop. I have stood on the green field of Croke Park wearing my countys colors. I have spoken to many young people; my first being at the Mayo Comhairle Na ng. I attended the annual Tatler Awards where I sat in a room with Irelands leading women. And thats just a few things hence the struggle to find

the right word to showcase the impact it has been for myself and my family. We as a team, and that includes the 69 other Roses I represent this year, are really trying to make an impact this year. Some may feel by putting on the sash weve achieved quite a lot and indeed we have, but we have also inforced confidence in the young people we all have met to date, showcased the charities we hold dear to our hearts and hopefully brought some smiles to the faces weve met along the way!I am excited to see how this path will evolve. I have a lot more work to do and honestly right now, I am trying to take as many opportunities to share and promote Irelands oldest, greatest and most geunine festival across our diaspora.

What does it mean to you to switch on the Christmas lights in Tralee where it all started for you last August?

I am excited to celebrate the beginning of Christmas in Tralee and with the people of Tralee. As an Irish person I am sad to say August was the first time I visited Tralee. Now I cant imagine not making a trip every August to celebrate the Roses. My family, friends and myself were welcomed with open arms by the volunteers and the

people who took to the streets to share the celebrations with us all, and I am looking forward to meeting all those friendly faces again.

Are you planning on staying on for Christmas or will you be returning anytime soon after Christmas?

I will be celebrating Christmas this year in Philadelphia with my great friend Megan Swansen and her family. She was the young Philadelphia designer who created my unique stage dress. I have never celebrated Christmas in the States as I always travelled home to be with my family, but I am excited to spend this holiday with a great family. I will be back in Ireland for New Years, kicking off the countdown in Dublin. You may see me for a little longer than a weekend come 2015!

If you are planning a long-term return to Ireland, how do you feel about making the move?

Ireland has always been and will always remain home, and how lucky I am to call it that. For me, wherever my parents are, home is there. So making a move home is quite easy! I am excited to see how this journey pans out over the next few months. Being able to be more present in Ireland for a little longer than I have been to date will allow me to be as impactful as I wish to be. My main goal is to continuing in reinforcing how important it is we cherish and celebrate our Irish connections through the greatest celebration there is; the Rose of Tralee. The festival and the women who will step to the stage next year and the years after deserve this continued recognition. I also believe in supporting all and as many young people related charities and events

across the country and world, as they are our future. Heres to seeing what happens!!

We sometimes take the Rose of Tralee for granted here in Kerry, but in Philadelphia and a lot of the further away countries is it still as alive as ever?

I dont think Kerry people take the Rose of Tralee for granted, how they could! The local people and their families who take to the streets for the five day festival are what people who visit take home with them you are the heart of it. Within the Irish community in Philadelphia, the Rose of Tralee is celebrated, more so for the month of March when the St. Patricks Day Festival is celebrated. Being honored with the International title for Philadelphia is a wonderful accolade for a city that was built by many Irish people. There is a large contingent of Irish people here in Philadelphia; in particular there is a very large Mayo clan, which keeps people tied to the mother land. With the inclusion of newly appointed Minister of the Diaspora Mr Jimmy Deenihan, I feel confident the Rose of Tralee will grow more.

Was it always your dream to be a Rose?

As most little girls growing up in Ireland or within the Irish diaspora, the Rose of Tralee is an institution. A beautiful celebration of powerful Irish women and the many who support them. The Rose of Tralee has always been on the maybe, someday bucket list for me. When I moved to Ireland at the age of seven, I watched each year as the Roses took over the stage for two nights. I was in awe at the dresses and talents of the women I saw. As I grew older, I began to understand the essence of what being a Rose meant to the Irish communities. Its not just about the pretty dresses and unique talents. Its the celebration of our every day Irish woman. She is our local footballer, our local teacher, our local gardai, she is the girl next door and the girl helping out at the church gate collection. She is the woman who stands up and speaks out. The person who is pushing everyday to bring the best out in people. She is the one always smiling and the one always supporting. She is most proud of her Irish roots whether she grew up in the Emerald Isle or not. She is the essence of what the Rose of Tralee is about. And I

wanted to try and be that. When I moved to Philadelphia over three years ago, I immersed myself into the City, the Irish community and felt most confident in my abilites. I always wanted to represent my county Mayo or the next place I called home. And Philadelphia became that.

Tell us a bit about your charity work for the year. We saw some fab photos on your social media page; you looked like you were really at home there in Kolkata?

The past three months alone have opened up many opportunities to volunteer in many countries. I traveled with the

Hope Foundation to Kolkata in India for a week to experience and explore the tremendous work the Hope team do in one of the poorest places in the world. I visited schools, sang songs, visited dump sites that the children called their playground. I travelled at night through two red light districts on a medic run and I got to see the beautiful colors, textures and buildings that make up Kolkata.

I have been to the Eastern Cape of South Africa with Niall Mellons Township Trust and I am honoured to have visited the homeland of the great Nelson Mandela. I met two hundred volunteers who travelled from Ireland to help children gain a better education. We built two schools in Nelson Mandelas home village. A first since his passing last year. How impactful and wonderful to be a part of this. How exciting it is to share this experience with fellow Irish. All it takes is one idea and from there beautiful things are created. Early next year I will travel with the inspiring Adi Roche and her team at Chernobyl Childrens International with twenty of the 2014 Roses. I am also planning on spending time with a NGO group called Development Perspective. Their objective is to challenge ideas we have about the world we inhabit.

Through discussion and experience, they hope to find ways to make this world a more equal place.

Equally if not more, I am excited to meet many of our young people within Ireland and see the work they are doing in their communities. I was privileged to attend an event by Mayos Comhairle Na ng. I met over two hundred confident, inspiring young people between the ages of 13 and 17. I could feel the motivation of making a difference instantly when I entered the room.

So where to next for Maria?

As I type this answer, I am en route to to the airport and setting off to the Eastern Cape in South Africa, with the team at Niall Mellons Township Trust. This project I am excited for. Over 200 volunteers from all over Ireland are also departing their homes to spend one week building

  • 12 CONNECT MAGAZINE December 2014

An ill child can be a major cause of anxiety for parents.

The problem is to differentiate the child with a transient viral illness from an illness that may progress to a life threatening condition. My brief today is to try to help parents to recognise when their child is at risk of a life threatening illness usually severe bacterial infection.

Older children can tell you what is wrong and can help you towards a diagnosis. However in younger children, you must rely on the physical examination.

That is a general observation: (1) Drowsy (2) Irritable (3) Not interested in toys or distractions (4) Cold fingers and toes

A good way to know how serious an illness is, is to press on (A) An ear lobe (B) Breast bone (C) Toes in sequence for 5 seconds and then release. White colour should return to red in 3 seconds, if longer than 4 seconds, seriously ill. If 4 seconds quite ill. Simple viral illnesses will not cause this. This is called capillary refill time.

If a child is cold in their feet and hands, the capillary time will be prolonged in his toes but not in his earlobe or his breastbone. This is a way to distinguish a child who is cold from one who is potentially at risk for serious illess(5) Difficulty breathing (A) Mild in drawing between the ribs(B) If breastbone is withdrawing = more severe breathing difficulty. Since the breastbone is a stiff bone it is harder to in draw it, thus this indicates more severe respiratory disease and often upper airway obstruction like severe croup

How Alert?(1) Alert (2) Responds to voice (3) Only responds to pain(4) Unresponsive

Three and four indicate very ill child.

TemperatureFor Measuring the best is a Tympanic Thermometer, it only cost 25. This is inserted in the ear to obtain

instantaneous and accurate recording.A temperature of above 39 Degree Celsius is more likely to be associated with serious illness especially if associated with any of the fore mentioned symptoms.

Light shone in the eyes; if it hurts it can be a sign of meningitis

Tumbler SignIf a glass tumbler is pressed against a rash. If it does not disappear it may be a sign of severe disease like meningitis. But it must be remembered that severe meningitis can present with a blanching rash in the beginning and rapidly progresses to a non blanching rash. That is a rash that disappears with a glass tumbler and a few hours later fails to disappear.

Abdominal Pain(1) if localised to one side, important, usually the right lower indicates appendicitis

In general terms the further away from the umbilicus (the belly button) an abdominal pain is, the more likely it is to be serious.

    (2) painful to move on to a couch or if there is an abnormal gait with the abdominal pain, in other words an abnormal walk, suggests peritonitis (3) Abdominal pain may be the only complaint in urinary infection and may not have fever or pain passing urine. (4) Blood in the stools especially red current jelly stools with crampy abdominal pain suggests intussusception which is very serious. (5) Vomiting bile which is yellow or green suggests an obstruction(6) Abdominal distension can be a serious sign

Head Injury What constitutes a significant fall = any fall from childs own height One has to know what surface did the child fall on to; was it concrete, wooden floor or tiles?

Younger children usually fall on their heads because the younger the child the heavier the head is relative to the rest of the body.

Head injuries are rare in infants and one has to consider physical abuse. Who was minding the child?

    (1) Behaviour after injury (A) irritable (B) combative (C) drowsiness (this should improve quickly, persistent drowsiness is very worrying)(2) Loss of consciousness (For how long? Loss of consciousness for more than 1 minute is serious, very often it is difficult to determine who long this was in retrospect)(3) Headache (headache where the bump is, is benign. Persistent headache away from the bump is serious and suggests brain swelling.)(4) Amnesia if the child does not recall what has happened, this is a serious sign (5) Vomiting more than one or two times after the head injury is significant.

Dehydration Assessment(1) How many wet nappies? If no wet nappies for eight hours it is serious. However with diarrhoea it can be confusing as to what is stool and what is urine. I would advise applying a urinary bag. (2) Sunken eyes mother knows the child best, it may be difficult for the observer to who does not know the child. (3) dry mouth (4) floppy skin(5) capillary refill time (see prior) (6) Cool toes indicate dehydration If more than 2-3 of above, indicates moderate to severe dehydration

  • MENS STYLING AND GROOMINGBy Niall FitzgeraldTHE PERFECT BLACK SUIT:

A good suit that is fitted and tailored will never go out of style. A classic black suit is a wardrobe staple, it will serve any man well for any occasion, James Bond has been wearing his for over 40 years. There are two styles of suits, regular fit and slim fit. Slim fit suits and shirts have become popular over the last five to ten years. The difference between slim fit suits as opposed to a regular fit is in the cut. Slim fit suits are 1.5 inches slimmer on the chest and waist, the sleeves are an inch slimmer too. These suits emerged to give the

wearer a more snug feel and to emphasize the male silhouette. If you are in a position to spend a few hard earned euros on a suit I highly recommend a visit to Ryles menswear on Ashe St., Tralee. They offer a great tailoring service and will alter suits to your exact measurements. If your budget wont stretch that far Penneys offer a great classic black suit that comes in under 50. THE ERA OF THE BEARD IS OVERDo you watch the trendsetters like Michael Fassbender, Daithi OSe

and Paul Galvin? They have all helped make the beard trendy over the last couple of years. Now you can be ahead of them, facial hair trends are changing. 2015 will see the return of the classic clean cut look, think Clarke Gable in it happened one night. Some of you may struggle with losing your furry friend thats kept you warm for so long. Ive found a couple of products to help you transition back to being bare faced. Babyliss have beard stylers that are precise to a mm. CH Chemist have the Babyliss I-Trim for 29.99 which will help those of that dont want to lose all the fuzz in one go. If you are brave enough to shave your beard off in one go, CH Chemist have Gillette Pro Fusion with a set of 8 blades included for 23(a serious bargain). Always use a shaving gel/foam and a moisturiser to keep skin in good condition. For those of you that hate the idea of being bare

faced, 3 day stubble will always be your friend and the women in your life will still love it just as much as the beards.

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH:Looking good doesnt happen by magic. This month I am picking LOreal Men Experts Hydra energetic Recharging Moisturiser. It works wonders at waking up tired skin. A must have in the bathroom for hiding the effects of the night before.

Merry Xmas anda Happy New Year

All OUI want for Christmas is...

  • CONNECT Style SEASONS GREETINGS EVERYONE, CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND WE ARE ALL GETTING STRESSED ABOUT WHAT TO WEAR. PLANNING YOUR CHRISTMAS WARDROBE CAN INCLUDE OUTFITS FOR PARTIES, LUNCHES AND RELIGIOUS SERVICES. FORGET THE CAROL THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS AND FOCUS INSTEAD ON THE SIX ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS WARDROBE.

    1. SHAPE WEARShapewear or foundation underwear should be on every womans pressie list. One brand that I highly recommend is ATIR, worn by celebrities such as Sonya Lennon and Maura Derrane. A great feature of this range is the fact that not only is it entirely Irish designed and made, but such attention is given to the combination of materials, cut and stitching details that it is very effective but also very comfortable to wear (so Ive been told).I am delighted to say that Annburys is one of the exclusive stockists of this product.

    2. DRESSThe dress should be a classic and versatile style that suits your shape and is comfortable. Once you are comfortable you ooze elegance and confidence. Although I usually advocate colour, the little black dress can be an essential staple in your Christmas wardrobe, as it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.

    3. A PAIR OF TROUSERSFor those of you who dont favour dresses or skirts, a well cut pair of trousers can be just as flattering and versatile. There are styles and lengths available to suit all shapes and compliment all varieties of tops.

    4. TOPThere are so many beautiful tops out there, in all different styles and fabrics, that I would advise you to make sure you always try on and ask advice if you are unsure what suits your shape. Also never judge how it looks by the hanger. Whether you want a bit of Christmas glitz, everyday glamour or a more casual look, there is a top out there for you.

    5. CARDIGAN/COAT/COATAGANI have listed a few options depending on the weather and peoples needs, but with the chilly winds of December you will need to keep warm as you dash around. Dont forget the different options and have some fun with colour and texture at this time of year.

    6. ACCESSORIESThe way you accessorise your outfit can determine whether you are going for a casual or a dressier look. Scarfs make a great day accessory and a statement piece of jewellery can glamorize the simplest of outfits be it a necklace, collar or dangly earrings. This season the exaggerated large clutch bag is all in and a little tip for you, the bigger the clutch the slimmer the overall silhouette looks.

Ho, ho, ho hope you all have a lovely Christmas and best wishes for 2015.See you next year,Till then Happy shopping,

The book is aimed at the voluntary medical services or the first responder on the scene of an accident or illness whereby they could give a far more comprehensive and effective treatment resulting in a better outcome for the patient without going outside their scope of practice. It is particularly suited for anyone thinking of becoming a Community First Responder or for someone who just wants that extra knowledge in the home. This book leads you

There are also over 165 photos & illustrations and 27 algorithms to guide you through the skillsets. Serves 6

    TURKEY, CRANBERRY AND CHESTNUT ROULADES

    INGREDIENTS

25g butter1 onion, finely chopped1 garlic clove, finely chopped25g dried cranberries 1 tsp dried sage 4 slices white bread, made into breadcrumbs100g cooked chestnuts, chopped2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley100g cooked chestnuts, chopped6 turkey breast escallops12 streaky bacon rashers

Try this Turkey roulade as an alternative to Turkey and ham when entertaining this over the Christmas season. It is quick to cook and always

ensures you that wow factor for your guests. The stuffing is one of my favourites, and can be used to stuff your turkey on Christmas day and

also works well for stuffing a pork steak.Stuff the neck end of the turkey and with the

excess stuffing, roll it into balls and roast in the oven.

The little stuffing balls also make a fantastic Christmas finger food.

    Happy Christmas CookingMark

    1. Place the butter into a pan and place onto a medium heat.2. Add the onion, dried cranberries, dried sage and garlic.3. Cook over a low heat until the onions are soft. This will take around 6-8 minutes.4. Remove from the heat, allow to cool a little and then mix in the bread crumbs and chestnuts. Season with salt and pepper and add the parsley. Add the sausage meat.5. Place the turkey meat between two sheets of Clingfilm and bat lightly bat out with a meat pat or rolling pin.6. Lay 6 rashers of bacon on a separate large sheet of clingfilm and then top with 3 of the turkey escallops. Pipe or spoon the stuffing along the top edge of each piece of meat and roll up tightly like a sausage. Repeat with the remaining turkey escallops. Place in the fridge for 2 hours oo overnight before cooking.7. To cook, remove the cling film and place the roulades on a lightly greased baking tray. Drizzle with some oil and lightly season with salt and pepper. Pre heat your oven to 200c/gas mark 6.8. Cook the roulades in the oven for 25-30 minutes until cooked through. Christmas is a time for everyone but especially the kids so this month we have asked Keelan and Thomas to review the latest craze available on every mode of game pad

MINECRAFT... They tell us Minecraft is a game you can literally build anything you like; Thomas particularly likes this game as he has built a complete world on it. Mine craft is a game about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things. You can now create literally anything you like and you can invite other friends to play and build with you online, so there are hours of enjoyment to be got with the added extra that its good exercise for the brain and the imagination.

  • So what do you give your family and friends for Christmas do you buy presents at all? Each of us are different but at the end of the day I think for the most Christmas is a time for giving and receiving so the connect team have gone out and about to see whats available this Christmas for those near to you this season.

    Connect Christmas Guide

    1. A Ndr Spa voucher for your loved one is ideal. Choose from special packages or monetary value. Available to purchase online at www.ballygarryhouse.com or from hotel and spa reception.

    2. Jewellery is always a safe choice and speaking of choice we are spoilt when it comes to choosing a jeweller in Kerry, lots all over the county to choose from so whatever part of

Kerry you are in there is no excuse.

    3. Clothes are always another safe purchase anything from a pair of gloves to a winter coat for the man or woman in your life is always good.

    4. Gadgets these were always known to be boys toys but on recent research it proves that the ladies are as into their techy fix as the boys so whether its the top of the range IPAD AIR or the most recent smart phone the sky is the limit here.

    5. Books are always a personal favourite of mine and to be honest it doesnt always have to be the most romantic novel on the shelf. There are many good autobiographies out there this year with Roy Keane, Brian O Driscoll and the lady everyone wants to read this year majella O Donnell, on another note if your loved one has just recently launched a new business or is indeed looking for some motivation for those tough times we have the perfect thing for the Christmas stocking, Susan Hayes positive economist has released a range of books that are witty encouraging and most of all a good read.

  • Irish TV Is a new enough addition to our television screens and we recently met up with our own Brian Hurley who is the face of County Matters Kerry, its a great facility to promote the county and indeed the country to the greater audience around the world, we were delighted to chat with Brian and find out more about the station.

Can you give us a little background information on Irish TV?Well Irish TV is the brainchild of co-founders Pierce OReilly and his wife Mairead Ni Mhaoilchiarain from County Mayo. It all began four years ago with a pilot project about a friend of Pierce and Mairead who had cancer. He had a great story and really believed in the couple. They couldnt get anybody to broadcast it. They spent six months in pitching mode, but no one wanted to commission it. Instead of letting their friend down, the couple shot the documentary themselves. They asked other friends to help and work for free. As a way to broadcast this and other such stories, they set up Mayo TV. Within six months they had had 2.5 million hits on the website, and so decided to roll it out across the country. The seed for Irish TV was sown. The couple had a great blue print, bringing Local Stories to a Global Audience. Thankfully this pitch struck a chord with London based millionaire businessman John Griffin whose father was from Glenbeigh, Co. Kerry and mother from Mayo. On meeting with Pierce for the first time and listening

to his idea, John left him a cheque for fifty thousand and told him to give him a shout the following day to discuss more investment. I dont think John even knew Pierces surname at that stage! To date, John Griffin has committed to invest in the region of 15 million into Irish TV. John Griffin was recently chosen as the Kerry Man of the Year by the Kerry Association in London. Its a channel for all of Ireland but of course we are focused on the programme Kerry County Matters, do you find it hard to cover everything is there a lot to choose from every week and how do you decide what to cover?Certainly we do find it difficult to cover everything that is happening in the County. There are so many interesting events happening and wonderful stories to be told each and every day in Kerry, that it would be impossible to cover them all. In saying that, the Kerry crew are working very hard and we do our best to travel all over the Kingdom to ensure we are serving the entire community to the best of our ability. Anyone who watches the show on TV or online each Wednesday night at 7.30pm can see how much ground we cover and the amount of amazing people we get to talk to. In deciding on what we cover we consider a number of different elements. To keep my answer short and to the point, what I would say is, if the story is of Kerry, then we are interested. Is there a crew for each county to cover all the different areas or do you take a number of counties to cover?Currently Irish TV has approximately 26 crews covering all 32 counties and a number of crews abroad. The crew in Kerry which consists of David Pembroke (Producer), James Pembroke (Technician) and I Brian

Hurley (Presenter) cover just Kerry. We have a head office in Mayo employing over 20 people and regional offices in Northern Ireland, Manchester, London and the United States. The plan is to open a regional office in Munster soon. Irish TV employs around 130 people and that is growing all the time.

  • Its clearly a very positive thing for the county and is excellent for showcasing the county to a wider audience, how can people get their events featured? It is certainly an excellent way to showcase Kerry to a massive audience. I have also been involved in presenting an All Ireland Football special and a Home Coming special following the success of the Kerry minors and seniors this year. I was amazed recently whilst in London by the amount of people who were thrilled to witness the home coming live whilst abroad. Also, no other channel has ever produced 32 programmes from every county in Ireland every week. If anyone would like to get in touch simply get in touch with us by either email [email protected], phone head office on 098 56582 or if you meet me or any of the crew out and about let us know what you would like covered and we will do our best.

Is it easy for people find it on their broadcaster channels? If you are a SKY customer we are on channel 191 for viewers in Ireland, UK and Europe. You can find us on all free to air boxes just look out for Irish TV and on Freesat 400. You can find us on Eircom eVision and we will soon be on the UPC platform.

In the U.S we currently broadcast via the PBS network and of course we are online at irishtv.ie Irish TV is currently working on developing the US market and that will be followed by Asia and Australia.

Is there chill time for Brian I know with a busy house and young kids do you find time from covering the county to relax and unwind?I am very grateful to have a full-time job and so I do work a lot during the week and we film most weekends. But I am always conscious of spending quality time with the kids. I still manage most days to drop them to school, help with homework and we always make sure to have fun and play games. We recently introduced a new game at home where once a week one member of the family is in charge for at least an hour and the rest of the family are at their beck and call. My

daughter Brianna recently made me hop on one foot and sing to her, while mom made hot chocolate and she sent her two brothers off to clean her room. Its great fun and payback is sweet! My children are now age thirteen, eight and six so it is much easier compared to when they were babies. When I am at home with the family we have fun and that is the best way for me to relax and unwind. You cant beat a good laugh!

  • The worst thing you can do is panic...remember this is only one day out of 365. The most important thing is to have a light breakfast...dont be tempted to not eat because of the impending Christmas dinner calories that lie ahead. Traditionally you will spend most of

the day in the kitchen ...be aware of the mindless picking...also be aware of the bites licks and tastes that we fall prey to (they all have calories).Make sure that you pace yourself and have at least one hour between all courses. Sip water and lemon while you are cooking and dont be tempted to hover over your guests and the food and dont sit down at the table. Do not eat standing up. Place the food on the plate, always properly savour all the flavours and tastes. Talk, have fun and maybe even go for a walk....Enjoy your food, forget the quilt and remember tomorrow is another day. Be thankful that you are with your loved ones....and leave enough turkey for the sandwiches on St. Stephenss day when you need the energy for the Christmas sales!!... Good health and happy Christmas to all from Majella in Curves.

  • THE SEARCH IS ON FOR KERRYS YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARD NOMINATIONS FOR 2014!

The official launch of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2014 was held recently at Lee Strand, Ballymullen, Tralee, Co. Kerry. The awards scheme which first commenced in 1998 is designed to acknowledge the volunteering endeavours of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years. The winners will be announced at a celebratory function in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, January 16th, 2015. Awards will be presented for the Overall Winner, Certificates of Distinction, Certificates of Merit, a Voluntary Group Award and a School Award.

Speaking at the launch Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan said that he was delighted to be able to announce details of the 2014 awards. He emphasised the importance of recognising and supporting young people who make the effort to help others in their community. He asked the Kerry public to look around their area and nominate any young person who has volunteered in any capacity over the past 12 months. He also thanked Lee Strand for the steadfast support of the Garda Youth Achievement Awards over the past 16 years and stated that the success of the awards scheme was due in no small way to that continued support.

John OSullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand stated Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community and we are delighted once again to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the voluntary efforts of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community.

The closing date for receipt of nominations is Friday, December 12th, 2014. Any member of the public can nominate a young person whom they feel has made a contribution to their local area. Nominations are accepted from individuals, community and voluntary groups, schools and youth clubs/organisation. The winners will be selected by a panel of five judges who are community volunteers from around the county under the chairmanship of Chief Superintendent Pat Sullivan, An Garda Siochana. Nominations are available from any Garda Station in Kerry; K.D.Y.S. Office in Tralee, Killarney and Listowel or by contacting the Juvenile Liaison Office at Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102311. Nomination forms are also available to download on www.leestrand.ie
