Connected Conversations Arnow Campus Center, first floor 3:15-5:00pm
Open to all: students, emeriti faculty, faculty, staff, parents, Villagers.
How can we learn from the past to shape the future? All voices and ideas welcome.
One of the themes for this academic year (2019-20) has been Connections, especially those among the many different groups that comprise
the Lasell community. From all corners of campus and the Village, we have heard folks clamoring for more time and space to connect with
each other. We are therefore offering a new event to be piloted at the Fall Connected Learning Symposium. We are calling the event,
“Connected Conversations,” and we see it as an opportunity for diverse members of the Lasell community, from administrators and employees
to Villagers and students, to come together to talk with each other, to pause and think together, and finally to reflect on what is said.
To kick off this event, we are asking folks to prepare for this opportunity by engaging in a fun thought exercise. Indeed, since human beings
are living, breathing time machines that can transport themselves to the past (using their memories) or to the future (using their imaginations),
we would like you to contemplate the following question: What do you see as our greatest global challenge? Consider the lifespan of that
challenge. For instance, concerns about climate change have been around for at least half a century—indeed we’ll be celebrating the 50th
Anniversary of Earth Day in the spring—as have concerns about sexism, racism, democracy, immigration. What is your memory of this topic?
What do you hope, or see its future being in 10, 20, or 30 years? When we get together for the Connected Conversations, we will set up small,
intergenerational groups to see where we each have travelled!
Conversational Guidelines:
Form intergenerational groups.
Connect with one, two or maybe three others, including someone new to you.
Think about the past or future in 10-year chunks.
What do you remember?
What do you hope for?
The experience is the goal – it’s all about connections!
