CONNECTED LIVING – MOBILISING THE INTERNET OF THINGS
Our Aim: To help operators add value and accelerate the delivery of new connected devices and services in the M2M market. Achieved by industry collaboration, appropriate regulation, optimising networks as well as developing key enablers to support the growth of M2M in the immediate future and the IoT.
Future IoT Networks
The GSMA is working to establish common capabilities among mobile operators to enable a network that supports value creation for all stakeholders.
Remote SIM Provisioning for M2M
The GSMAs ‘vision is to unite all stakeholders behind a single, common and global Embedded SIM specification for early commercialisation to help accelerate the growing machine-to-machine (M2M) market.
IoT Business Enablers
The GSMA is working to create a sustainable M2M regulatory & policy environment that enables operators to unlock the consumer and business benefits of the IoT.
Ecosystem Engagement to align market perspectives, drive adoption and impact the market including automotive, health & learning, utilities and transportation
IoT Connection Efficiency
The GSMA works with its ecosystem partners to establish guidelines for how machines should communicate via the mobile network in the most intelligent and efficient way.
OUR VISION: TO ENABLE THE INTERNET OF THINGS, A WORLD IN WHICH CONSUMERS AND BUSINESSES ENJOY RICH NEW SERVICES, CONNECTED BY AN INTELLIGENT AND SECURE MOBILE NETWORK.
Connected Living – Mobilising the Internet of Things
IoT CONNECTION EFFICIENCY
The GSMA develops efficiency guidelines ensuring that device and application developers can follow a common approach on how to access and connect to the network creating a trusted, reliable environment that can scale as the market grows.
THE GROWTH OF IOT DEVICES AND APPLICATIONS WILL CREATE MAJOR CHALLENGES FOR THE IOT ECOSYSTEM:
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Local issues e.g. cell congestion.
Capacity and performance problemswithin the core network.
Degradation of the IoT service’s performance.
Increased power consumption of the IoT devices.
HOW CAN THIS BE AVOIDED?
Network Friendly Mode
– Network Friendly Mode is a non-standardised feature of the Communications Module that polices the amount of times the Communications Module can perform IMSI attach, GPRS attach, PDP Context activation and SMS-MO in order to reduce the amount of signalling generated towards the HPLMNs HLR, SMSC or GGSN.
Radio Policy Manager
– Radio policy manager is a radio baseband chipset feature that protects the Network by performing “Connection Aggression Management” which is necessary when a device is aggressively trying to access the network following various non-access stratum reject scenarios
KEY FEATURES DEFINED WITHIN THE GUIDELINES

REMOTE SIM PROVISIONING FOR M2M: EMBEDDED SIM
THE GSMA CREATED A SPECIFICATION THAT ENABLES THE REMOTE ‘OVER THE AIR’ PROVISIONING OF MACHINE-TO-MACHINE (M2M) DEVICES THAT ARE HERMETICALLY SEALED OR INSTALLED IN HAZARDOUS OR REMOTE LOCATIONS.
Backed by global operators and SIM suppliers, the specification promotes a common, global, remote provisioning architecture that will help to ensure interoperable technical solutions that reduce costs, boost security and accelerate the rapidly growing M2M market.
Connected Living – Mobilising the Internet of Things
GSMA EMBEDDED SIM - ESSENTIAL BENEFITS
Accelerating the market growth of Machine to Machine (M2M)
Increasing operational efficiency for the M2M ecosystem
Enabling remote or ‘over the air’ installation and management of operator profiles
Cutting operational and physical logistics costs
• No need to ship physical SIMs
• No need to change physical SIM for entire product lifetime
Enables new business models
Preventing market fragmentation by avoiding different, incompatible technical solutions
Driving economies of scale within the M2M industry
Adopted & by leading Operators, SIM Partners and Vendors

FUTURE IOT NETWORKS
NEW OPERATOR CAPABILITIES SUCH AS SECURITY, BILLING AND CHARGING AND DEVICE MANAGEMENT CAN ENHANCE THE IOT BY ENABLING THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW SERVICES. THROUGH THE PROVISION OF THESE EXTRA VALUE SERVICES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, OPERATORS CAN SUPPORT INNOVATION AND THE FUTURE GROWTH OF THE NETWORK.
This project will deliver a roadmap of new Operator capabilities to help accelerate the growth and value of the IoT market for businesses and consumers.
Connected Living – Mobilising the Internet of Things
IOT BUSINESS ENABLERS
A GROWING INTERNET OF THINGS PROVIDES A HUGE RANGE OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC BENEFITS, BUT FOR THESE BENEFITS TO BE REALISED BUSINESSES MUST FIRST BE INCENTIVISED TO DEVELOP DEVICES, APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES, WHILE CONSUMERS MUST BE ABLE TO TRUST THAT THEIR DATA IS SECURE.
The GSMA supports a constructive policy and regulatory framework that can unlock the benefits of m2m services for consumers and businesses, building confidence and network capability.
This project will help deliver a sustainable M2M environment that will enable operators to unlock the consumer and business benefits of new and profitable services.

ECOSYSTEM ENGAGEMENT
THE GSMA WORKS CLOSELY WITH ITS PARTNERS IN THE ECOSYSTEM TO ALIGN IT’S STRATEGY,
UNDERSTAND THEIR REQUIREMENTS AND ENSURE ITS INITIATIVES ARE ADOPTED. BY DETERMINING
COMMON CAPABILITIES WE WILL MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY CREATING SOLID
FOUNDATIONS FOR M2M AND ENABLING IT TO GROW.
