A message from our CEO.

In the context of evolving global carbon markets and a national climate policy review, the Institute’s independent market-focused role is becoming increasingly more critical as businesses, investors and project developers look to realise opportunities in meeting Australia’s emission reduction goals.

Respected and trusted by key decision makers on all sides of the political divide, the Carbon Market Institute (CMI) is uniquely placed to play a constructive role in the implementation of climate policy in Australia.

CMI’s core focus is on generating value for members through catalysing opportunities in a low carbon economy. All our activities aim to add value to members and can be framed through two key outcomes: knowledge exchange and commercial interaction.

The quality and strength of the Institute is directly related to the diversity and depth of expertise in the membership. It’s the reason we can regularly bring together such a strong body of informed experts through our workshops, roundtables and other initiatives to inform and influence government policy makers as well as convene events of national significance, such as our annual Australian Emissions Reduction Summit.

We have built a reputation across major political parties as independent, constructive and authoritative which means our members’ views are heard and valued ‘inside the tent’ at this critical time.

I invite you to join the Institute and work with us, our members and Australia in the transition towards a low carbon economy.

What We Do.The Carbon Market Institute has a strong track record of impacting policy, and facilitating knowledge sharing and commercial interaction across Australia. We managae a wide array of initiatives that enable members to inform their stakeholders, identify business opportunities and expand

their networks.

We’re talking & Australian policy makers are listening.Impartial, independent and constructive, we work across the political divide and bring government and industry together to create realistic and lasting market-based solutions.

National Policy DevelopmentWe communicate with Australia’s federal and state political leaders, departments, regulators and agencies overseeing the zero-carbon transition. Our insights and industry leadership enables us to facilitate educative and constructive dialogue with policy makers and provide pragmatic, market-based solutions across party lines. We engage with all sides of politics to encourage a better understanding of market-based approaches to climate policy.

Sub-National EngagementWe engage with sub-national governments across Australia, to advise on the creation of policy frameworks to catalyse private sector investment in low-carbon growth. With our support, States are translating policy into pragmatic solutions, enabling government and business stakeholders to collaborate and drive the transition to a net-zero carbon economy.

Pragmatic Business InputAs a market-based organisation, the Institute sits at the centre of climate change and business; connecting the dots between thought leadership, policy, business and the evolving carbon market. Whilst facilitating interaction between business and government at critical points in the policy discussion, we make sure our members are always engaged and that a highly informed business voice is heard and valued “inside the tent”.

Global ParticipationWe bring global trends and insights to the Australian context whilst also supporting Australian action in the international climate policy arena. We’re connected with state and non-state actors across the Indo-Pacific region and further afield, including strategic relationships with the UNFCCC, Green Climate Fund, International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), World Bank and the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition.

Business is leading Australia’s transition to a zero-carbon economy. We’re unlocking opportunities by facilitating knowledge sharing and commercial interactions between businesses, thought leaders, financiers, technology, service providers and key policy makers.

International Market InsightsWe’re linked in with international state and non-state actors, and have real visibility on the evolution of global carbon markets. We’re helping companies understand how they will be impacted by the economic transformation underway and how Australian business can develop, promote and deploy pragmatic, real world solutions to developing economies and climate-affected communities around the world.

Carbon Farming Industry DevelopmentAustralian business must be part of the global approach to addressing climate change, and our domestic carbon abatement industry is poised to drive our national contribution towards emissions reductions. Australia’s carbon farming industry must be scaled up to meet domestic and potential international demand for abatement, and we’re working with business, financiers, government and research institutions to make it happen.

Voluntary Market EngagmentWe’re supporting voluntary market activity across the country, to ensure that business can optimise its position and build internal capacity for a future where compliance markets will impose some liability on companies. In an era of Australian climate policy uncertainty, the Institute is promoting awareness of, and engaging with voluntary emissions reductions initiatives to help organisations take a leadership role on climate action.

Commercial InteractionAs a hub for carbon market activity in Australia, we’re playing a significant role in connecting buyers and sellers, and facilitating the sharing of real-time market knowledge and insights on how business can respond to the impacts of climate change. We’re helping Australian companies understand how they can manage risks and take advantage of opportunities as the world transitions to a zero-carbon economy.
