Approximately 400 people met in the Great Hall of Knox Grammar School from 16-19 April. Everyone is able to read the reports and proposals presented as well as the decisions made. These can be found at http:// nswact.uca.org.au/resource-centre/secretariat/synod-meeting- 2016/ We started the 4 days with a prayer gathering where the multicul- tural aspect of the UCA was evident. The worship session each day made good use of the prayer the Moderator had written for the oc- casion. Young people played an important role in each worship ses- sion and Olivia Freeman was one of the young people who offered a Bible reading at one worship session of the whole Synod. During the Synod, a vote was held for the Moderator elect and Rev. Simon Hansford from Tamworth was elected. One enduring memory for me is the involvement of members of UAICC which included Aunty Dianne Torrens on stage with the Mod- erator most of the time and a Smoking Ceremony on Sunday morn- ing. Another memory was the delegates from the many Tongan con- gregations and the Korean Presbytery. On the first day people from a Christian church in Burma attended to say “thank you” for the fi- nancial support given by UCA quite a number of years ago. The UCA is definitely a church which has members from diverse backgrounds. A new method of discussion involved the use of discernment groups where the full gathering was divided into smaller groups of about 15 people. These groups ensured everyone was able to comment on proposals and feel heard. Each discernment group reported to the Business Management group and responses were made within 24 hours and prior to voting on any of the main proposals. The other major change was the use of Open Space where members put forward any idea about which they were passionate and sup- porters of the idea would gather and discuss ways to progress the idea. REPORT FROM SYNOD — Lyn Dun I was fortunate to be a representative of Mid North Coast presby-tery at the recent meeting of the 2016 Synod of the Uniting Church in Australia NSW/ACT. Approximately 400 people met in the Great Hall of Knox Grammar School from 16-19 April. Everyone is able to read the reports and proposals presented as well as the decisions made. These can be found at http://nswact.uca.org.au/resource-centre/secretariat/synod-meeting-2016/

We started the 4 days with a prayer gathering where the multicul-tural aspect of the UCA was evident. The worship session each day made good use of the prayer the Moderator had written for the oc-casion. Young people played an important role in each worship ses-sion and Olivia Freeman was one of the young people who offered a Bible reading at one worship session of the whole Synod. During the Synod, a vote was held for the Moderator elect and Rev. Simon Hansford from Tamworth was elected.

One enduring memory for me is the involvement of members of UAICC which included Aunty Dianne Torrens on stage with the Mod-erator most of the time and a Smoking Ceremony on Sunday morn-ing. Another memory was the delegates from the many Tongan con-gregations and the Korean Presbytery. On the first day people from a Christian church in Burma attended to say “thank you” for the fi-nancial support given by UCA quite a number of years ago. The UCA is definitely a church which has members from diverse backgrounds. A new method of discussion involved the use of discernment groups where the full gathering was divided into smaller groups of about 15 people. Each discernment group reported to the Business Management group and responses were made within 24 hours and prior to voting on any of the main proposals.

The other major change was the use of Open Space where members put forward any idea about which they were passionate and sup-porters of the idea would gather and discuss ways to progress the idea. (cont’d page 2)

Make a difference with Fair Trade Fair Trade Fortnight, from now until May 20, is the annual campaign to educate consumers that buying Fairtrade certified items guarantees a better deal for Third World producers and offers hope to many people in poor communities – espe-cially women – ensuring they receive employment and a fair wage. Fairtrade ad-vocates for better working conditions, improved terms of trade and empowerment for more than 1.65 million farmers and workers in 1,226 producer organisations across the Fairtrade system in more than 70 countries around the world.

thousands of children are trafficked onto cocoa farms where they are beaten and kept enslaved. Uzbekistan, one of the world’s largest exporters of cotton used in the international garment trade, uses forced labour of schoolchildren as young as nine to harvest cotton by hand. Buying Fairtrade you get a slavery free guarantee that the chocolate you enjoy and the clothing you wear is not produced using force labour of children. If you are keen to source a wider choice of ethically pro-duced items, go to the Fairtrade website http://fairtrade.com.au/en-au/get-involved to find out where to buy over 3,000 certified products on offer. You CAN make a difference with your shopping!

Fair Trade is more than just trading: It proves that greater justice in world trade is possible. It highlights the need for change in the rules and practice of conven-tional trade and shows how a successful business can also put people first. It is a tangible contribution to the fight against poverty, climate change and economic crisis and its principles are supported by UnitingJustice which is committed to be faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ by pursuing social and ecological justice and peace in Australia and the world.

Report from Synod (cont’d) Of about 60 ideas put forward and discussed, 20 were discussed in greater detail on the last day and projects for these will be developed by the individuals concerned. Attendees commented that the opportu-nity to participate in the Open Space created a greater sense of con-nection with like minded people and a sense of being heard at Synod. Proposals or reports that provoked the greatest discussion included: Report from Uniting Resources Decriminalising small quantities of drugs for personal use (one

sub point in the Social Justice report) Writing to the Minister requesting NSW not have privatised gaols Financial support for Rural and Remote Ministries. An interesting

report came from a group that has been involved in dialogue with the Jewish Board of Deputies. A representative from each of UCA and the Jewish Board of Deputies spoke at Synod and explained the progress that had been made between the 2 groups as a re-sult of the meetings. Both groups had deepened their knowledge of each other and formed a good alliance which will result in 2 joint Israeli-Palestinian projects.

Further information can be found at [email protected]

I appreciated the opportunity to represent the presbytery and I would recommend the event to anyone interested in seeing how the UCA op-erates. Everyone is welcome to attend Synod but only elected repre-sentatives are able to vote. If you would like to have a chat to hear my perspective of any of the items presented at Synod please feel free to see me. Lyn Dun
