BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS           DPS returned to class on August 22, which means anincrease in commuter and pedestrian traffic especially aroundbus stops, schools and neighborhoods. Here are some safetyreminders: Tips for Drivers: 

Slow down & obey all traffic laws and speed limits. Stop for school buses that are loading or unloadingchildren.

Watch and obey signals from school crossing guards.

Watch and obey signals from school crossing guards. Be alert and watch for children, pedestrians, cyclistsand skateboarders.Watch for school zone signals and obey the reducedspeed limit.Do not pass, change lanes, or make U­Turns in schoolzones.Do not text or use a cell phone while driving.  

Tips for Students/Families: 

Parents of younger students who ride a school busshould consider escorting their children to and fromtheir bus stop.Children should not stand or play in the roadway whilewaiting for or exiting a school bus.Students who ride the bus should follow all safety rulesand avoid distracting the driver.Students who walk should do so in a group, whenpossible, and follow pedestrian laws. Students who ride a bike should wear a helmet andfollow all safety rules for bicyclists.

3. Lead the Way – Become a Block Liaison and collectand distribute contact information for neighbors on yourblock.

XCEL UPDATE          Xcel unveiled a long­term strategic plan known asAdvanced Grid Intelligence and Security (AGIS). If approved,AGIS will vastly improve customer service and powerreliability while making it easier to integrate clean energy intothe power grid. As part of Our Energy Future, the advancedpower grid plan mirrors initiatives taking place across thecountry and building a smarter energy infrastructure.

SAMUELS COMMUNITY GARDEN SOCIALS        With school back in session, Samuels CommunityGarden will begin harvesting directly to the student cafeteria.The kitchen staff uses the local produce to create healthydishes for the school. Community volunteers are alwaysneeded to help with watering, weeding and mentoring at thegarden.  Stop by the potluck grill (3985 S Vincennes Ct) onMondays, 5:30­7:30 pm to participate.

CHANGE IN TRAFFIC LIGHT TIMING        You may have noticed that the two crosswalk signals onYosemite (north of Hampden) turn red even when there is nopedestrian present. These lights were activated by Denver'straffic engineers to improve auto and pedestrian safety andreduce speeding on Yosemite. A traffic signal will eventuallybe installed on Yosemite and Eastman. 

• The Rockies Inn (Evans & I­25) demolition should becomplete by October 1.Construction of Green BoxStorage will begin and isexpected to be finished inabout one year. 

 

• 350 apartments are planned for Colorado and Warren. TheCountry Fair, Amish Furniture strip mall and the sushirestaurant will all be torn down. There are no plans at this timefor the adjacent property on the corner of Colorado and Evans.

DENVER WATER          Denver Water is making upgradesto the Hillcrest water storage facility atHappy Canyon Road. The first phase(the tanks) will run from 2016 throughlate 2019 and the second phase(pumping station), will overlap with thefirst and is anticipated for 2018 throughearly 2020. To find out more informationgo to denverwater.org/hillcrest.
