As we learned at the kick-off event on Friday, it takes a village to guide them to success. Like little baby fledglings, they’ll arrive wide-eyed and overwhelmed by their unfamiliar surroundings. With a strong committment to communication, teamwork and patience, we can help our little fledgelings spread their wings and fly!

Here’s what you need to know:

1. UHDS will host a “drop-off center” for new arrivals living on-campus at the UHDS central office on Thursday, the16th and Friday, the 17th. Students may not check into the dorm prior to September 16th.

2. Our first-ever Pathway Graduation Ceremony will coincide with the new student welcome party on Monday, September 20th! New students will be able to see last year’s Pathway students cross this academic milestone.

3. This year, placement testing will NOT occur first thing in the morning on the first day of orientation. Rather, it will be spread out over several days. Hopefully, this will make for a less stressful experience for the students!

4. The INTO Info Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept 22nd in MU room 203 from 10:00am-2:00pm. Local businesses will have information booths where students can learn about banking, cell phones, DMV info and other services.

5. Connect Week events are being cross-promoted with INTO orientation events! INTO Students can join the shuttled shopping trips to and from Fred Meyer, as well as attend the New OSU Student Welcome Picnic.

6. TB testing is no longer a requirement! Student Health Sevices now only requires immunizations for MMR.

7. And, last but not least, the Pathway orientation will include an informative two-day Mini-conference—an orientation “boot camp” for Pathway students. The students will be divided into groups to rotate through the sessions. There will be 5 different workshop topics. The topics are:

What’s neW for neW student orientation?

» The Online Classroom: Blackboard, Online Services, Calculating Your GPA, What is a GPA?

» The Pathway Program: What is It?, Academic Expectations, The OSU Baccalaureate Core

» The Syllabus: How to Read It & What It Means, Academic Honesty, Pathway Program Classroom Expectations

» Housing & Dorm Life: Roommates: How to Live with Them & How to Deal with Them

» Academic Services: Tutoring, Academic Counseling, OSU Library, Academic Warning,

Probation, & Suspension

The admissions team is ready to throw down

Kick-off time!!Set amongst the rolling oak woodlands, golden fields of grass and pastures of North Corvallis, Friday’s kick-off event proved to be a fruitful, productive, and fun event for all. The day’s events included teambuilding activities, informative presentations from all departments of INTO OSU, and friends and family joining later for a catered barbecue picnic in a barn. As the group gathered under the lofty exposed beam ceilings in the Firehouse building, one could see clearly how we have grown in numbers. With around 40 teachers and over 40 administrative staff, our entire team currently weighs in at just over 80 people total.

Each event attendee received a nametag to hang from an orange INTO OSU lanyard, and a 3-ring INTO OSU binder filled with useful information. The retreat got off to a lively start with Elena leading everyone in a fun activity to demonstrate the importance of teamwork and communication. All of the departments had a chance to introduce themselves and describe their roles in the process of recruitment, admissions, finance, student services, academic programs and academic support.

Of course, the highlight of the day’s events came later, when friends and family joined us for a picnic barbecue. In true American style, there were hamburgers, hotdogs, beans, chips, pasta and of course...a keg of beer! We learned our lesson from last year’s company picnic—this year we made sure to arm ourselves with camping lanterns and a battery-powered boom box to keep the party going.

Special thanks to Julianna Betjemann, Amy McGowan, Warren Lawless and Kat Delf for their hard work planning the event, and to all who helped them make it such an enjoyable and productive day!

Clockwise from top: Michael Witbeck, Andy Roberts and Thet Mar Win concentrate on the teambuilding task at hand; The Admissions team presents at the kickoff; Our keg was Powered By Orange; Julianna Betjemann slices oranges for the microbrew garnish.
