A GOOD SUPERVISOR IS CRITICAL TO A SUCCESSFUL OPERATION

Businesses that have good supervisors are o en the ones cu ng ribbons, expanding and hiring in a recession, and are generally places in‐dividuals want to work. Being a good supervisor is more than staying on task and under budget. While those are certainly important responsibili‐

es, it can be argued that the most important duty of a supervisor is to effec vely manage and mo vate em‐ployees. A supervisor that understands that role becomes cri cal to the success of an opera on. If you are a manufacturing opera on, you must produce a quality product, in an efficient manner and in a safe environment. The biggest variable to the successful comple on of those three items is dependent upon an opera on’s most valuable asset – its employees. And, on a day to day basis, no one has more direct contact with employees than a supervisor. To be an effec ve supervisor, one must understand what an em‐ployee wants out of his or her job. There are a few things that employees want out of a job, maybe more so than others. Employees want to be appreciated, to feel “in” on the happenings of the business, have some form of sympathe c help with problems, job security, tac ul discipline and finally, good pay. While a supervisor may not be able to impact the financial stability of the business to provide an em‐ployee job security or an employee’s “good pay,” the supervisor has a direct impact on the other four. Should the supervisor nega vely impact the areas within his or her control, the opera on’s product suffers, there is poor employee morale and, as a result, high turnover. Though it may be difficult to quan fy turno‐ver costs, it is safe to say that when employee turnover is high, the bo om line suffers. Supervisors must not be robo c in their management of people. Supervisors need to be good listen‐ers. Supervisors must, at mes, accept nega ve talk. If this occurs, supervisors should not get defensive. Listen to the complaint, let the employees know you hear what they are saying and later, check back in with them to see if the problem s ll exists. O en mes, it does not. I believe the most important thing employees want out of their job is some form of apprecia on. By this, I do not necessarily mean employees want a healthy raise, though I am sure that is important, too. Em‐ployees want to be appreciated.

A showing of apprecia on is simple. When is the last me you told your employees you appreciate their hard work? It happens far less than it should. By this, I do not mean for you to show apprecia on only when someone volunteers for over me or completes an extra task. Rather, say “thank you” once a day when you see your employees. It is an easy, effec ve way for supervisors to be respected by the employees they supervise. In turn, produc vity increases, morale is boosted and the opera on successfully moves for‐ward. Jake Fulcher is a labor and employment law A orney with the law firm of Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP. Jake can be reached at [email protected].
