Greetings from Lenox! As I sit down to write this, it’s late July and I’m here on a “vacation,” but my days seem to be busier than ever. When I learned the theme of this issue of Connection – Joy & Laughter – I recalled an interesting workshop I attended in Anaheim, California, in 1982, shortly after opening the Ranch.

The workshop was titled “The Power of Laughter and Play,” and featured Norman Cousins, who had recently written Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins spoke about the power of laughter and joy to effect spontaneous healing. Another speaker was noted anthropologist Ashley Montagu, who introduced me to the belief of the ancient Greeks that “the goal of life is to die young – as late as possible.” This concept resonated with me, and I’ve made it the premise of my “Living Younger Longer” talk for three decades.

I used to say the most important thing you can do for your health is exercise, but now I believe the key to aging well is your attitude about it. Never under-estimate the importance of joy and laughter. In the following pages, you’ll discover more about what the experts tell us, and what it means to your health and longevity. My advice to anyone is: Find more things to laugh about, fewer things to worry about or stress over – and try to incorporate joy into your life every day.

Before I close, I’ll share with you some news about the plans I’ve been involved in during my stay in Lenox – because I know you’ll be as excited about it as I am!

We’re planning major capital improvements to both Canyon Ranch resorts – especially in Lenox, where we’ve already installed new central heating, cooling and humidity control in all rooms, opened a Spiritual Wellness Center and a new restaurant, Cafe. We’ll be renovating the dining rooms and expanding outdoor dining; redoing the guest rooms and outdoor pool area; and covering the guest parking. In Tucson, where we’ve recently added the beautiful new Spiritual Wellness Center with its Sanctuary and Meditation Garden, the guest rooms will be upgraded. (Of course, we’ll ensure your guest experience remains unaffected throughout this process.)

All these projects came about as the result of your feedback. Our guests have always been our partners, and your suggestions are not only welcome, they’re critical to our ongoing evolution. We’re always thinking about new programs and facilities to further enrich your Canyon Ranch experience.

To your continuing joy and good health!

Mel

Is laughter really the best medicine? By itself – well, maybe not. But as a primary ingredient in a therapeutic elixir of optimism, sociability and a sense of humor? Yes, according to many physicians and behavioral health professionals. “I agree – I’ve seen the benefit of laughter in

my practice and we’re waiting for more clinical research to support this,” says Nicola Finley, MD, of Canyon Ranch in Tucson.

Several studies suggest that laughter can be good for the heart and the healthy function of blood vessels – a cheerful likelihood, considering that heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S.

Perhaps the best known of these studies, led by Michael Miller, MD, of the University of Maryland Medical Center, found that people with heart disease were 40 percent less likely to laugh in a variety of situations compared to people of the same age without heart disease. This followed the intriguing discovery that laughter causes the blood vessels to dilate in order to increase blood flow, effectively lowering blood pressure, increasing circulation and reducing inflammatory reactions that can lead to fat and cholesterol buildup in the coronary arteries.

If you consider laughter as a component of a larger framework – a positive attitude, sociability or a predisposition to see the funny side of life – now you’re on more solid ground in terms of clinical research, Dr. Finley says. “We know that people with a lively sense of humor may manage stress better, may feel less pain from an illness or injury and may

use laughter to overcome anxiety” compared with their cohorts with a gloomier outlook on life.

People have always believed in the power of laughter. In ancient Greece, physicians prescribed for their ailing patients a visit to the hall of comedians or the theater. They believed entertainment to be an essential part of the healing process.

Journalist and author Norman Cousins set out to prove as much in his own life, and published his story in 1979. The best-selling Anatomy of an Illness was Cousins’ account of his diagnosis with a degenerative disease. Told that he had little chance of surviving, he came up with his own recovery program incorporating large doses of vitamin C, along with a positive attitude, love, faith, hope, and laughter induced by Marx Brothers films. Cousins died in 1990, having survived many years longer than doctors had predicted.

“Most people familiar with Cousins’ story remember that he believed in the therapeutic power of laughter,” Dr. Finley says, “but there was more to his program than watching funny movies. He had a remarkably close working relationship with his doctor, and both believed in an integrative, holistic approach to medicine. Establishing trust and a connection with your doctor can be very important.”

A physician who takes an integrative approach may be less inclined to jump immediately to pharmaceutical solutions, and more willing to try treatments that build emotional resiliency and stress management skills. “It’s been estimated that at least 75 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related problems,” says Dr. Finley.

“If you think about it: headaches, insomnia, back pain … so many of our most common complaints are triggered by stress. An integrative medicine physician will take the time to ask patients the deeper questions and really get to the root cause of the problem.”

So, will the day come when your doctor prescribes an evening of Monty Python or The Big Lebowski for your chronic neck pain? Perhaps, according to Dr. Finley. “The research is promising, and laughter is fun. Why not do it more often?” ●

800-742-9000 | FALL 2015 | CONNECTION 3

Hard to believe we’re already coming into a new season. Two glorious months in the Berkshires this summer went by in a flash. For me, we’re coming up on the best time of the year now. The holidays are great, yet it’s also easy to get caught up in stuff and nonsense that can cause unneeded stress.

For those of us with little ones, we start by worrying which costumes will make them happy for Halloween. Is Elsa from Frozen still “it” for little girls – and what on earth is the latest for boys? Once we get past that, Thanksgiving hovers all around us. I did something my peers can appreciate: A few years back, I gave our daughter Amy our dining room table, along with the imaginary wand that made her the junior matriarch for holiday feasts. (She’s a better cook than her mother anyway!) Now the holidays are pure joy for us at Amy, Morey and Talia’s home – a taste of heaven where the little ones can romp outdoors.

And then December sneaks in – a joyful time of year, as long as we don’t let the shopping and preparing get out of hand. I now have the perfect gift-giving solution: I start with gifts to charities, and let the mommies shop online for the kids, since they know exactly what they want (did you know kids hate receiving clothes?). Then I do the wrapping, the kids have gifts to open, and everyone is happy.

And then it’s New Year’s! It can be happy or sad, depending how your year went. The nice thing is that we all start with a clean slate. We hope and pray for our family and friends to enjoy all good things in the future. That’s what I wish for all of you!

With love to all,

Enid

You’re barreling down a steep curve on a roller coaster, or watching that video with the talking dog yet again, or reminding your college roommate

about the crazy night you’ll never forget. And it starts. That smile you can’t contain, the rising chuckle. Now it’s unstoppable – the breathless, can’t-hold-it-in laughter that lifts you out of whatever you might be stressing over and lands you right where you should be – in the moment.

“That’s how it works,” says Jeffrey Rossman, PhD, Director of Life Management at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, “irrespective of what you’re laughing about. It’s a letting go, a release of tension that changes your brain chemistry.

“It’s about seeing things in a different light – the surprise of a punchline or the scary-safe feeling of a roller coaster. We get out of a rut and see ourselves differently, too.”

Laughter may actually be the most immediate and successful stress reliever of all. The release of dopamine and endorphins lifts the spirits, and sharing laughter with others builds a sense of comfort and connection. Plus, it’s infectious.

“Think about watching a funny movie alone at home,” Jeff says, “versus seeing it at the movies. People want to laugh together.”

Q: DID YOU HEAR THE JOKE ABOUT THE ROOF? A: NEVER MIND, IT'S OVER YOUR HEAD! ha!

HumorNOT JUST A LAUGHING MATTER

Page 7: Connection Fall 2015

Jeff points to the rise in popularity of laughter clubs and Laughter Yoga, in which people gather for no other reason than to laugh. They don’t tell jokes or pull pranks, either. The act of laughing is contagious and uplifting in itself.

TOO BUSY TO LAUGH?“There are people who feel so fully occupied or pressured to be productive that they don’t allow much laughter in their lives,” Jeff says. “When people are tightly wound, their bodies can become rigid, too. Laughing can help anyone let go.

“It’s also a gift to people who are hard on themselves. When you can laugh at yourself and circumstances, you’re accepting natural vulnerability. You lighten your daily load.”

NATURAL INSTINCTS Children are the laughter masters, of course, spreading it wherever they go. Ask any grandparent.

“People crave laughter and fun all through their lives,” Jeff says, “and it helps older people stay in touch with their innocent, playful side. It may even prolong life.”

Sense of humor is one of the commonalities found among people who live to be centenarians. Plus, laughter helps people dealing with chronic illness or the painful treatments that can help them heal. It’s a release, too, for the people who work in hospitals and other emotionally weighty environments. Just bringing a smile to someone’s face can be healing and give hope.

For that matter, Jeff says, humor lightens any workplace. Consider the goofy videos and silly stories shared in the office. “The jokes we send, the cute puppies and kittens, warm people’s hearts and add joy and cohesion to a group. When people are happy at work, they tend to be more effective. There’s definitely less burnout.”

People who are special to you often share your sensibilities and sense of humor. It’s a free and limitless source of joy with healthy benefits for mind, body and spirit. So, what made you laugh today? Go tell someone. Now. ●

When your feet are tired and achy, you are

too. That’s where the Canyon Ranch Healthy

Feet® center steps in, with a tempting menu of

healing, soothing possibilities for feet hungry for

some TLC.

Developed by Dr. Glenn Copeland, author of

The Foot Book, the Healthy Feet center – also at

Canyon Ranch in Tucson, with services available

at the Lenox resort and Canyon Ranch SpaClub®

at Sea – focuses on advanced foot health

and comfort.

There’s more to feet than meets the eye, says

Mark Manuel, lead biomechanical specialist at

Canyon Ranch SpaClub in Las Vegas. Back,

knee or hip pain could be a foot problem

in disguise. A Gait & Footwear Analysis can

evaluate your gait and the biomechanics of your

feet, revealing any deviations or abnormalities,

which may create imbalances or lead to injuries.

“Your feet are your foundation, directly

connecting to your ankles, knees, hips and lower

back,” he says. “For example, an externally

rotated hip can result in a tendency to walk with

your toes pointed out, causing stress and strain

in other parts of the body. Using an orthotic can

help correct the over-pronating, relieve pain and

improve balance and alignment.”

Other services focus on athletic injury alleviation

or prevention; wear and tear, like corns, calluses

and cracked, dry skin; or finding the right

athletic shoes.

When it comes to tourist-tired feet – and, in

nonstop Las Vegas, it often does – the hands-

down favorite services are Healthy on Your Feet

and Instant Relief, focused on massage of the

lower legs and feet. As well as feeling utterly

blissful, foot and leg massage helps reduce

muscle tightness, release tendon tension and

improve poor circulation. Imagine the best foot

rub you ever had, and just say “ahh!” ●

A ll over the country, kids are riding bikes, skating, racing, playing with their dogs and having a wonderful time. So when did exercising

become a chore to be avoided?

For some people, the very word “exercise” can be a turnoff, says Mike Siemens, Clinical Director of Exercise Physiology at Canyon Ranch in Tucson. “If you have a negative reaction to the term ‘exercise,’ think of it as ‘movement’ instead – it’s amazing how it can change your attitude.”

But how do you talk yourself into a regular program of movement – and how do you make it fun?

Here’s one idea: Don’t be afraid to get dirty! Mud runs have erupted in popularity in the last decade. You don’t have to be an athlete, but the fitter you are, the more you’ll enjoy climbing over cars, dashing through deep puddles and other stuff you just don’t usually get to do as an adult. And your mom won’t yell at you – except maybe to encourage you at the finish line.

GO FOR A GOALIf you want to improve your endurance, lose body fat or get stronger, you do need to work out three days a week – but add context to your workout regimen. “Goals are a great motivation for fun movement,” says Mike.

making exercise

Page 11: Connection Fall 2015

Sign up for an event and start preparing for it. It’s a fantastic way to add a sense of purpose to your workouts and feel the joy of camaraderie with other participants. You can train for your first 5K, half marathon or bike event. If you’re already an athlete, how about a marathon or triathlon?

If a whole triathlon sounds too much, team up with two friends and take a section each – cycling, swimming or running. Do it another time and switch out events. Step outside your comfort zone with a spectacularly fun event like that wild and crazy mud run, or a color run where spectators spray you with a rainbow of dyes. You’ll have

a blast – and if you find the going tough, your regular workouts will boost your strength and stamina for next time.

Not an “event” person? Book a ski or hiking trip to a scenic spot you always longed to visit. How about hiking the Grand Canyon next summer – or biking around Europe? When you’re eager to strengthen your legs in preparation to hit the slopes or a challenging trail, use the ellipticals or stationary bike as a pathway to your goal. Watching a funny movie while you tread the mill can keep you going that extra mile.

For days when you’re rushed, or feel less energetic, have a Plan B, Mike advises. “Rather than simply passing on exercise, have a shorter, more intense workout that you can do in 10 or 15 minutes. Doing something is always better than doing nothing.” To keep exercise enjoyable,

don’t forget to warm up first, he adds. Take it easy for the first few minutes to allow your airways to expand and your body and muscles to reach their optimal temperature.

KEEP IT FRESH Spice up your training with more fun, motivation and variety. Create a network and exercise with friends. On the weekend, do something you can’t normally fit in, like a Zumba or dance class, or tennis. Drive to a park or lakeside for your walk or run. Too hot to run? Try walking or running in the pool – or challenge friends to water polo,

Marco Polo or any of the other fun games that every kid plays. Anything you do in water is exercise! Laughter is a bonus.

Do something new, or revisit an activity you loved when you were young. Roller blades and skates are over-the-top fun. Ride a horse or climb a rock wall. And don’t forget to dance, even if it’s in your PJs in your living room.

Be a role model: Teach your children that playtime is fun at any age. Play tag with them, climb trees or ride bikes as a family.

Whether it’s exercise, movement or playtime, says Mike, “It’s gotta be fun or it won’t get done. Use your fitness to bring you joy.” ●

Spice up your training with more fun, motivation and variety … laughter is a bonus.“ ”

Just for the fun of it (dare you not to laugh!)

• Build a sandcastle.• Make a snow fort and have a snowball fight.• Build a treehouse.• Dance with abandon.• Toss a Frisbee.• Play with a dog.• Grab a boogie board and ride the waves.• Try your hand at a wild game of wallyball or pickleball – Ranch favorites!

A sense of humor is serious business in the workplace, according to Cory Kahaney. And she should know – being funny is her job.

Everyone can benefit from learning how to loosen up and laugh with the people you work with, says Cory. In fact, “Funny Gets You Further” is the name of

the workshop she presented earlier this year at Canyon Ranch in Lenox. She also addresses corporate groups on the topic.

“It’s a really important message,” she says. “Getting comfortable with your witty side is crucial for women in business. A lot of us have been fighting so hard to be taken seriously at our jobs, we find it hard to relax and be funny with our coworkers. But that’s how to make meaningful connections.

“Ever notice the speakers at a business conference? How often are the men giving witty, entertaining presentations, while the women offer fact-

filled, dry – albeit thorough – talks? And, since a conference is specifically for networking, which one is invited out for drinks after and which is more likely to be in their room with room service? Only one of them truly gets to network.”

Since emerging as a finalist in the first season of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Cory has become a familiar face in the nighttime talk show circuit and made a number of TV appearances, including Comedy Central Presents: Cory Kahaney. Over

the last four years, she’s been an annual headliner at Canyon Ranch in Lenox; last January, Cory and two fellow funny women, Jane Condon and Karen Bergreen, brought the house down with a three-day special event titled “Laughing Matters” – and they'll return with more, January 31 to February 2.

The event in Lenox features stand-up comedy, workshops on humor and creativity, and a storytelling clinic. “Storytelling is always a big hit,” Cory says. “People are shy at first. We start out with an icebreaker – ‘What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?’ Soon enough, the barriers come down and everyone has fun. Storytelling is great, because everyone can do it. It’s the one thing that can bring anyone into the arena of performing.”

In Lenox, when she’s not doing her comedy thing, Cory enjoys immersing herself in the Canyon Ranch experience. “I love it – it’s heaven!” she says. During every Ranch visit, she makes a point of challenging herself with one class that’s entirely new to her. Last time it was Indo Row. “That was crazy!” Cory recalls. “It’s you and a bunch of people jumping from one thing to the next. You can’t go to the next routine until the person in front of you is done. … So there I am, struggling with the rowing – which is really hard – and my teammates are screaming at me, they’re doing jumping jacks and they’re not allowed to stop until I’m finished. It was intense!”

Cory adores the dance classes (“but I’m really terrible”), indoor cycling, Thai massage and restorative yoga. “I’m always looking forward to the next visit,” she says. Would she consider taking her road show to the Tucson resort someday? “I’d love to visit Tucson,” Cory says. A true East Coast girl, she adds, “Especially in winter – it would be great to get away to someplace warm!” ●

Our world of healthy opportunities grew even greater recently with a significant investment

from Canyon Ranch co-owner Crescent Real Estate Holdings and the crucial addition of Susan

Docherty as Canyon Ranch CEO. Her passion for health and wellness is the perfect balance with

her proven corporate success. During 30 years at General Motors, she held senior-level executive

positions around the globe, growing luxury vehicles like Cadillac and serving as brand architect

for the iconic Escalade.

Co-founders Mel and Enid Zuckerman and Jerry Cohen will, as always, manage the Canyon

Ranch resorts in Tucson and Lenox. Susan will guide projects that expand Ranch horizons and

bring healthy living opportunities to exciting new locales and venues.

Mel says of Susan: “Her thoughtful expansion of brands coupled with her enthusiasm for our

WHAT DREW YOU TO CANYON RANCH?After 30 successful years in the global automotive industry I was really interested in spending the remainder of my career working with a mission-focused brand, company and team. Canyon Ranch was built on heart, soul and mission by co-founders who never lost sight of that over the past 36 years. It is both an honor and very humbling to be at the helm of this great brand and to be able to help write the next chapter of Canyon Ranch, honoring the pioneering spirit of Mel, Enid and Jerry.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST CANYON RANCH GUEST EXPERIENCE? After joining the company in April of 2015, I had the opportunity to spend a week at the Canyon Ranch Life Enhancement Center with 30 other guests. It was truly incredible! I got to interact with some long-time Canyon Ranch guests and with our incredibly talented physicians, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, life management professionals, chefs and a host of Canyon Ranch team members. What makes us unique is that we surround our guests with so many opportunities to learn how to live a life of health and wellness.

YOU’RE INVOLVED IN MANY NEW PROJECTS AND POSSIBILITIES FOR EXPANSION. ANY SPOILERS YOU CAN SHARE?Building strong brands that stand the test of time is hard work and requires focus and commitment from the entire team. The world’s best brands remain true to a core vision and stay focused on executing with excellence. Sounds easy to do but it’s not. Together, we will grow our brand with purpose to ensure that it is sustainable on a global basis. Right now, we’re conducting some in-depth guest research in the U.S. as well as internationally to help us chart our course. Look for news this fall that will introduce the newest member of the Canyon Ranch family – an international resort in a very exotic location!

WHAT DIFFERENCES WILL TUCSON AND LENOX GUESTS NOTICE IN THE FUTURE?Tucson and Lenox will always represent the wellspring of our brand. This is where it all started, and these two magnificent properties will continue to play an important role in the Canyon Ranch portfolio. As our co-founders have done for years, we will continue to update and improve these properties so that our guests continue to be surprised and delighted each time they visit. Whether that’s new culinary offerings, health and healing programming or hiking adventures, our goal for Tucson and Lenox is delivering world-class life experiences that continually improve year after year.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST SINCE JOINING THE CANYON RANCH FAMILY? Three things: 1. Guest passion and love for the Canyon Ranch mission 2. Commitment of our team 3. Unlimited potential for growth

HOW IS THE CANYON RANCH HEALTHY LIVING PHILOSOPHY REFLECTED IN YOUR LIFE AND FAMILY? Being healthy and living mindfully has always been a priority for me, my husband and our teenage daughter. We try to eat a healthy diet most days (though we always have room for something sweet), exercise regularly and get eight hours of sleep, which is especially tough when there’s so much going on! My husband is a triathlete and we both love to cook, so we prepare meals that have good nutrition to keep him strong of body and clear of mind. Being able to compete at a high level is a big priority for him. The truth is, eating well helps all three of us keep up the energy we need to work, play and enjoy life to the fullest. ●

Where’s the Joy?

Righthere The Canyon Ranch Institute

Life Enhancement Program (CRI LEP) engages people in a serious, intense, life-changing and extremely grown-up experience – all the more reason that participants love to slap on the big red noses!

“It’s such a simple thing, those red noses, but it completely changes the atmosphere and flavor of what’s going on,” says Gary Freifeld, an RN with Berkshire Health Systems in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and a member of the

Core Team in its south county CRI LEP. “When I went through the Life Enhancement Center myself at the Ranch in Tucson, I stated that my focus would be on adding more joy and fun in my life. Then I got home and was assigned to teach ‘Where’s the Joy?’ to our CRI LEP groups. Kismet!”

As an ICU nurse at Berkshire Medical Center, Gary’s days are often difficult. He constantly sees patients

who are gravely ill, frequently due to lifestyle. “I was getting frustrated,” he says. “I wanted to get in front of

this, help people make positive choices now so they don’t wind up in ICU or with chronic illness. That’s what the CRI LEP is about.”

The CRI LEP is offered free to people in low-income communities. Among their weekly nutrition, fitness and lifestyle classes, one standout favorite is “Where’s the Joy?” It’s a chance to unwind, bond as a group and experience what it’s like to find joy and laughter “in the moment.”

“I start by showing a cool video of snow monkeys,” Gary says. “Watching animals takes you to a special place, not thinking about yesterday or tomorrow. Then we play games with balls and paddles, and we usually wind up with 15 minutes of hysterical laughter. Everyone’s in the moment then, and we talk about what that means and how it benefits their health. Being aware and mindful helps people make better decisions.”

Gary notes that fun and play are universal needs, just like peace, autonomy and meaning in life. “When you don’t have these things, it gets expressed in unhealthy ways – stress and not taking care of your body, for instance. The group talks about the physical, mental and social benefits of laughter, and we brainstorm about how we can increase it in our lives.”

At the CRI LEP in Savannah, Georgia, one of the Core Team members is Kathy Kurazawa. She shared an inspiring story while leading her own popular “Where’s the Joy?” class.

“I talked about the time I had to deliver something to the building across from my office,” she says. “First, I stopped in the restroom, though. Then I crossed the street, walking toward a café and a big picture window. A woman started yelling at me: ‘Lady, lady, your skirt is up!’ My whole backside was exposed. I fixed my skirt and noticed two men grinning at me. I just waved at them, and they waved back.”

Kathy’s animated and hilarious telling of the story had the group raucously laughing. Her attitude: What can you do except laugh?

“I could’ve gotten upset with those grinning men,” she says, “but I’d be the only one hurt by that. It’s the same thing at home – you lose the remote or someone’s little habits could drive you nuts, but what does it really matter in the scheme of things? I choose

to laugh at life’s little foibles.”

Kathy’s and Gary’s healthy attitudes toward joy and laughter add a powerful

element to the CRI LEP. It’s a great stress reducer, comes with a wealth of benefits and keeps program participants coming back for more. Years from now, when they meet each other on the street, they’ll still be saying, “Hey, where’s your nose?”

Valerie Costas is a CRI LEP graduate who was once a teacher, then a

professional clown for more than 20 years. She touches people every day with her joy

and laughter, which are generous, healthy and utterly contagious.

“In 2006, I was diagnosed with cancer,” Valerie says. “My daughter threw fabulous, fun parties for me since then, inviting friends I hadn’t seen since childhood. We’re making the most of each day. Gratitude opens a whole other world – and there’s so much to be thankful for.

“I’ve met talented, amazing people through the CRI LEP. We’re all inspired by each other in so many ways.” ●

A utumn is the season of abundance. Perhaps that’s why it’s the best time of year for playing with our food: carving jack-o-lanterns, baking

fancy cookies, roasting chestnuts, bobbing for apples, creating gourd arrangements.

Food and celebration always go together, but never more than this time of year as days grow shorter, nights turn colder and we seek the comforts of hearth, home, family and friends. We break out the hot chocolate, gather the kids to make Halloween treats, bundle up for tailgate parties and plan holiday feasts.

“Fall is a great time for fun family traditions that revolve around food,” says Canyon Ranch Corporate Chef Scott Uehlein. When it comes to seasonal foods that make memories, pumpkins are perhaps the gold standard. Chef Scott recalls annual family outings to a pumpkin patch, and the kids’ excitement at choosing

a favorite to take home. Carving the pumpkin, roasting seeds and baking pies are rituals in which the whole family can share.

Chef Scott also recalls memorable family visits to a “u-pick-it” farm; they’d return home with baskets of apples. Part of the excitement was the anticipation of turning the apples into pies or applesauce. “Applesauce is one of the easiest things to make, and you can turn out batches of it to freeze for later. Of course, we ate most of it right away.”

Aside from the celebratory fun-and-games aspect, the fall harvest also brings a trove of essential nutrients to the table. Take advantage of this nutritional bounty by combining these foods as ingredients in comfort fare including soups, stews and casseroles (but don’t forget to minimize the cream-based recipes and watch portion sizes). ●
