Connections Special Days and Holidays Imagine a month with no holidays–no national holiday with parades and picnics and no special occasions that call for Hallmark cards and flower bouquets. Can you envision not celebrating a single holiday from the first to the 31 st ? Welcome to August! At Mt. Carmel Community, we love to celebrate with friends and family, so we decided to explore some of the more obscure celebrations that take place in August. If you are from Middleton, Wisconsin, the home of the National Mustard Museum, you might celebrate and honor one of the world’s oldest and most widely enjoyed condiments on “Mustard Day,” August 2 nd . If you or a family member served in the U.S. Coast Guard, you might wish to commemorate its 225 th birthday on August 4 th . If you are left-handed you might have fun with International Left-Handers Day on August 13 th where righties are encouraged to discover what it’s like to do everything backward! We considered all of these special days and more before deciding to celebrate the sun and sand of Hawaii! This month marks the 56 th anniversary of Hawaii’s statehood. The highlight of our month-long celebration of Hawaii is our annual Luau Party! The festivities begin on Tuesday, August 25th at 10:30. Come join us for some island fun including “ALOHA” Bingo and a traditional luau feast! Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts optional!

Island Fun!

You’ll find a recurring “Island” theme throughout our activities this month! Join us for a game of Hawaiian Punch Ring Toss to celebrate the anniversary of Hawaii becoming America’s 50th state on August 21. We’ll also enjoy a few movies that celebrate the spirit of the islands: “Hidden Hawaii” on Tuesday the 25th and “Blue Hawaii” starring Elvis Presley on the 28th.
