The Navigating the Gap Resource Fair, held on July 20, 2011 at the Anaheim

Downtown Community Center, was a huge success thanks to the over 100 ser-

vice providers in attendance!

This free event for community- and faith-based organizations from across the

County of Orange was hosted by the Orange County Capacity Building Pro-

gram (OCCBP), a project of Orangewood Children’s Foundation’s CONNECT

Program. Navigating the Gap featured a special guest presenter and a commu-

nity resource exhibition of 15 organizations with a variety of services and differ-

ing clientele. Along with an organizational copy of the Bridges Out of Poverty

book, each attendee received a packet of resource information for assisting hard

-to-serve populations and materials from all exhibitors for future reference.

CONNECT and OCCBP hope that each of the over 100 service providers in at-

tendance will bring back to their organization the knowledge and resources

they gained from Navigating the Gap, building the capacity of their organiza-

tion to better serve low-income populations in our community.

Thank you again for your participation and your continued efforts to serve

those most in need!

CONNECT and the Orange County Capacity Building Program would like to

thank the following exhibitors for their participation:

2-1-1 Orange County, Access California Services, Catholic Charities of Orange

County, Families and Communities Together (FaCT), Goodwill of Orange

County, Legal Aid Society, OC Human Trafficking Taskforce, OC Partnership,

OC One-Stop, Orange County United Way, Public Law Center, Serving People

in Need (SPIN), Taller San Jose, County of Orange WIC Program, and WTLC

A special thank you to Jodi Pfarr, from Aha Process!, who presented an over-

view of Bridges Out of Poverty. Jodi’s “dynamic” and “engaging” presentation

discussed relating to and understanding individuals in poverty. This thought

provoking presentation challenged those in attendance to adjust their mental

framework, gaining a new perspective on poverty and those who face its hard-

ships everyday.

All’s Well Home (AWH) is a local nonprofit organization offer-ing 24-hour sober living homes for men and women ages 18 and older, who are or who have been addicted to drugs, alcohol and other substances. Their program utilizes a 12 Level Self-Development Curriculum teaching the client to understand their addiction, the danger signs and how to overcome obstacles in a healthier way. As a Cycle 2 Grantee, AWH is working on a variety of projects from program evaluation to strategic planning. The organization has upgraded their IT capacity and has implemented new case management software for more comprehensive client tracking.

Illumination Foundation (IF) combines housing and social ser-vices with healthcare and behavioral mental health services to reduce the impacts of homelessness and reduce people’s vulner-ability to homelessness. IF works to break the cycle of homeless-ness in Orange County through a variety of programs, including mobile medical clinics and interim housing programs.

As a Cycle 2 Grantee, IF is working extensively on their work-force development program bringing employment assistance and job skills training to individuals living in local motels. IF is also working on upgrading their IT network to improve commu-nication and efficiency of client services.

Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Service (FIES) is a cooperative community organization established in 1975. FIES provides emergency food, transi-tional housing and other support services to the hungry and homeless. They are currently working on expanding their support services for fami-lies, by constructing a new apartment-style complex in the lot adjacent to their temporary housing site. This new facility will be used as a second-step housing program, for families in need of additional support on their path to self-sufficiency. As a Cycle 2 Grantee, FIES are working with consultants to build the ca-pacity of their workforce development and volunteer programs. They are also working extensively with the Olin Group on a marketing and re-branding plan to promote their long-running programs and expanding support services.
