Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. Endowed ScholarshipThe Albert “Chato” Gauna, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship is given to a student who has an APPROVED DEGREE PLAN leading to an Associate Degree from Central Texas College. Financial need shall be the first consideration. A student who receives this award must take a minimum of six (6) credit hours and maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 an each semester receive a GPA of 2.0 or better. Class can be taken at Central Texas College District or Service Area campuses.

The passing of a loved one is probably one of the hardest things that anyone can deal with, but we all know that they live on in our hearts and minds. The love we have for them goes on always and forever.

Setting up a scholarship in memory of a loved one can be beneficial to their family as it helps preserve the memory of their loved one.

Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. was a very loving and compassionate person that was taken from us way to soon. His hopes and dreams of attending college were shattered when he was taken at the age of 19. His legacy lives on through the Endowed Scholarship so that someone's dream may be fulfilled.

The Endowment Scholarship has been set-up and will provide a student with some financial support—but not much. This is where you can help. We are seeking assistance in hopes of raising a full-year’s tuition for the Scholarship recipient.

Contact Jessica Rivera at 254-423-5071 or [email protected] for information on how to donate to this scholarship.

Every little bit will help and will be greatly appreciated from both our family and the student that is awarded this wonderful Scholarship.

Cómo se dice Spanglish en español? By Sandra Y. Desjardins

Have you ever been patiently waiting in line and overheard a conversation that you weren’t sure was primarily in English or Spanish. Don’t worry, you aren’t the only one! More and more often, people are speaking in Spanglish, a combination of English and Spanish. With the population of Hispanics on the rise, the likelihood of stumbling across a Spanglish conversation is inevitable.

According to the 2010 Census, 308.7 million people resided in the United States on April 1, 2010, of which 50.5 million (or 16 percent) were of Hispanic or Latino origin (Ennis, Ríos-Vargas, & Albert, 2011). For many incoming immigrants, Spanish is their primarylanguage and they only speak enough English to get by.

As Latino immigrants settle into their new country, their American-born children are 88% more likely to speak English very well (Hakimzadeh & Cohn, 2007). These bilingual children are at a wonderful advantage, but will sometimes use an English word right in the middle of a Spanish sentence or vice versa.

So the next time you hear, El está afuera, but I don’t know what he’s doing or the new car es del hombre que vive next door (Arrieta, 1994), just smile and go with the flow, because Spanglish is more than likely here to stay.

NEW RESTAURANT IN TEMPLE, TexasBy: Cammi Sanchez

If you're looking for southern cookin' with a Texas twist, and a little touch of the Caribbean, then look no further. 93 West Bar & Grill is now open for business. Located at 4984 W FM 93 in Temple, next to Bo's Barn, 93 West is the realization of owners', Bobby and Colleen Jendusa's twelve year dream. Together, along with Chef “Lolo”, the couple has achieved something spectacular.

Between the three, they have over 70 years of experience in the restaurant industry, but the passion they have for the business is unsurpassed. One bite of the delicious skirt steak and it's obvious they mean business! Or try the shrimp and grits, it's sure to please. The menu is exquisitely designed, and it's safe to say there's nothing like it around. Everything is prepared in house, so you're sure to get the freshest, tastiest food around! Fried plantains and mango salsa are indicative of the three years Bobby and Colleen spent in the Caribbean, and is nothing short of what the staff at 93 West call, “mouth magic.” There are daily lunch specials, and once it's gone, it's gone folks. They also serve Sunday brunch.

The ambiance is an eclectic mix of a classic Texas ranch and a sophisticated, bluesy lounge. The back end of the restaurant, (which is still in progress), boasts a classy bar and intimate seating, with lush, green foliage and a trickling indoor creek. You won't find any of the corporate cookie cutter feel here. The joint is stylish, for sure!

The restaurant sits on several acres, and ideas on what to do with it all are brewing. Bobby sees volleyball, horseshoe, maybe live music... sounds like some of the best entertainment around. Bring in your old cowboy boots (you know you have 'em) and they'll be tagged with your name, displayed in the foyer for a while, then donated to charity.

93 West is open Tuesday through Thursday, 11 am until 9 pm, Friday and Saturday, 11 am until 10 pm, and Sunday 10 am until 3 pm. Great food, great service...that's what you're sure to get at 93 West! Stop on by and see for yourself!

How to Choose the Right Auto Repair Shop for YOUby: Jessica Rivera

If there is one thing we know, automobile repairs always come unexpectedly. They always come at the wrong time, and we never know where to take our car without feeling like we are going to get ripped off.

Putting our trust in the hands of a company that will hopefully not take advantage of us is a hard thing to do, but fortunately there are ways to figure out if where we leave our vehicle is the “right” place for us.

Here are a few ways to figure out if the repair shop you choose for the maintenance of your vehicle is in honest and capable hands:

1. Ask friends and family. Usually they will be one of the first to tell us if their experience was a good one or a less than desirable one. Of course we cannot always depend on word of mouth, but it beats closing your eyes and choosing a random shop from the phone book.

2. Visit more than one auto repair shop. You can always tell what kind of job they will do on your vehicle by the way they treat you. If you see that they are rushed and won’t spend time to answer any, or all, of your questions, then they probably won’t spend time on your vehicle.

3. Always check to see if they have prices clearly listed. You wouldn’t want to leave your car at a shop that tells you “It just depends on what’s wrong with it.” Most reputable repair shops will have a base price listed.

4. Finally, have them do something small on your vehicle like an oil change – this way you will be able see how they work and care for your vehicle.

These are just a few suggestions to follow when choosing an auto repair shop. Always do your homework on shops in your area so that you won’t get stuck with a shop that will just take you for a ride.
