SCALE MODELS WELLINGTON IPMS

Front cover: 1/48 Merit SE5a - David Frowen/Photo: Peter White

Editor’s note: David built this model in 1959 with minimal references, and had to paint it using house paint since that was all that was available. It still looks great today and made an evocative addition to the “Blast from the Past” selection.

Modellers in the PubThe first of a planned monthly Scale Models Wellington IPMS “Modellers in the Pub” informal get-together.

Come along to the Reading Room at The Library (the bar, not the public library) from 6pm on Friday 9 September.

The Library is upstairs above Burger King on Courtenay Place by the intersection with Tory Street. The entrance is immediately to the left of Burger King, and the Reading Room is on the far right as you enter The Library after climbing the stairs.

Hope to see you there!

Old Fokkers and Build the Same KitBSK is almost over but there’s still time (maybe!) to build an Old Fokker if you were lucky enough to get one.

The model is the Pioneer2 Fokker D.XXI from Rex Barker’s donation to the club, and your deadline is the same - build it and bring it along to the August meeting.

This isn’t a competition, more an excuse to make a model, so if it looks like an aeroplane when you put it on the table, you’ll receive a $20 Modelcrafts and Hobbies voucher!

Here are some simple build tips for the Fokker :

• The fuselage join may line up better if you remove the locating pins, this will affect canopy alignment later on

• Same with the wing top halves, if you work on the fit of the wing halves you can avoid a wing root gap on the fuselage so you don’t need to fill it later

• Careful preparation of the parts will give you a better result• Yyou can ignore all this, superglue it together and colour it

with a Sharpie and you will still be eligible - yay!Even more good news:

• If you can’t make it along to the August club night, we will accept an Old Fokker entry by posting pictures of it on the Scale Models Wellington Facebook group provided they’re up on or before the August club night.

• If you are entering a kit for BSK, and you don’t have time for an Old Fokker too, you are also automatically eligible for the voucher.

• If all goes to plan we’ll be handing the vouchers out at BSK prize-giving in September. Only one voucher per club member though!

So please get building - there’s still a weekend left!

Hi there Junior Modellers,Talking to the “A Team” the last session on 4th August to get those BSK masterpieces (either your F-15E, Warrior IFV or USS Lexington) completed went well despite the wintery blast, and you’ll be able to get things ready for Judgment day on 31st August.

While I was away overseas I did manage a morning off to visit a local military museum. I have included some shots to hopefully inspire you and to tackle something different for the end of year club display and competition in November. There are models in stock to match some of museum pieces on display below.

Here is the “August Winds mystery picture challenge” to ID any two of the three museum exhibits below and win an Academy 1/48 Mirage III kit, at our September 3 session.

To enter, write down the answer on a piece of paper (item X is………. & item X is ……….) and place the paper in a sealed envelope with your name on the front. Then just hand it in to me when you arrive for our session in September. The first correct answer drawn will win the Mirage III kit.

Session dates & themes for the remainder of the 2016 programmeAug 31 BSK judging and prize giving.

Sept 3 Special coaching sessions weathering skills for Armour, Aircraft & Ships.

Oct 1 Prepping for year-end club model competition.

Nov 5 Finishing off those masterpieces for year-end club competition.

Timetable for the judging and prize giving on Wednesday 31 AugustLocation Petone Working Men’s Club, Udy Street, Petone.

Set up and registration 7.40-8.00 pm.

Judging 8.00-8.15 pm.

Prize giving 8.20-8.30 pm.

Remember the Adult BSK will be held at the same time which will give you all a good opportunity to compare notes and see what the adults have been up to. The judges will have their hands full on the night so once the judging begins please respect the need to keep well away from the models being judged and be patient. The results of the adult competition will only be posted in the September Newsletter where as yours will be announced on the night along with prize giving.

I still have a pile of modelling magazines and some more started kits which I had collected for August which will be available in September instead.

Our new compressor and Tamiya HG spray gun are due in September as well and the club has agreed to top up our cash reserves to keep the Tamiya Model magazines from MC&H coming, as well as replenishing our diminishing paint and model stocks for prize giving.

While overseas I succumbed to the 10-1 exchange rate to obtain my next project build for 2016-2017 to keep pace with our growing band of ship modellers.

The list of junior modellers for the combined 1-4pm session• Fergal, Nevan, Jaydon, Cordell, Harrison, Madeleine, Connor, Samuel, and ShaquileIf I have missed anyone or if you would like to change your session time or bring a new member along please give me a call well beforehand, PLEASE let me know by the Friday night before the Saturday session. Please remember that our helpers all give up their Saturday afternoons to help out.

Please don’t forget your $2.00 GOLD COIN donation and bring something to build.

See you all on Judgment Day and Happy Modelling
